- Pronunciation will be practised emphasizing the chosen sounds. However, if
the teacher notices they are not producing the right sounds, they will be
guided to do so.
Teaching Approach: Communicative Approach. Students are expected to infer the
rules of the target language and learn new vocabulary, by means of listening,
reading and using it in communicative activities. They are invited to develop their
language awareness.
Integration of skills: Students’ listening and speaking skills are integrated through
students’ interaction with the teacher and among them. They will also be asked to
listen, watch, read, and write, in order to complete different activities.
Materials: Photocopies, board, chalks, posters, video, video projector.
Seating arrangement: Working in pairs as they usually sit may diminish the
affective filter, they may also be asked to work in small groups, choosing their
partners.
Cooperative work: The whole lesson demands cooperative work because the
teacher will ask questions and give explanations to everybody, and they will be
expected to participate actively. The lesson will require excellent behaviour and
rapport between the teacher and the students, which may be created through
motivation and timing.
3. Possible problems and possible solutions: In case technology didn’t work, students
may use the related handout to carry out a Reading Comprehension activity in
pairs, for example.
Potential problems students may have with the language: In order to minimize
difficulties students may find while the teacher uses the target language almost
the whole class, different classroom management strategies will be applied: the
lesson is carefully planned, timing is controlled to be efficiently used, the visual
and auditory input is chosen to facilitate learning, and activities will be modelled
and more examples will be given in case difficulties arose.
Assessment: I don’t think assessing performance while presenting new vocabulary
and structures will be relevant taking into account that this is the first class of a set
of classes around the same topic.
Adaptations: In relation to the students with intellectual difficulties, they will be
invited to participate in class as any other student; and in case they found it too
difficult to pay attention to what the others do, flashcards of sports will be given to
them (the pictures are at the end of the plan); for them to look up words in
dictionaries and write sentences using the verb tenses they remember.
Routine: (10’)
- The teacher greets the students: “Hello, do you remember my name? I am
Mariana”, she puts a paper with her name on her desk, she continues “How are
you today? Fine?” she mimes gestures that mean feeling good and repeats the
question “Are you O.K.?” “Yes?”
- The teacher says “Write your name on a piece of paper” she demonstrates
what they have to do with a piece of paper. She adds, “Put it on your desk, like
this” and she does that “Great…”
- “Have you watched the Olympic Games on TV?”, “Do you like sports?” “What
sports did you like the best?” (the teacher may repeat the questions in Spanish
in case students don´t understand her)
Transition: “Ok, today we are going to talk about sports, and we are going to watch a
video and read about the origins of the Olympic Games, they were celebrated in Greece”
Warm up (15’)
- The teacher puts posters on the board like the pictures below: names of sports
and pictures for the students to match. She reads the names of the sports
aloud and asks the students: “Do you know these words? Can you match them
with the pictures?”, she invites students to participate saying their names, for
4. example “Maria, which number would you write here?” she continues, and
once they have completed the column, she corrects the mistakes and invites
the students to repeat all the words together. She continues asking to the
whole class “Do you play sports? What sports do you play here at school?
Soccer? Volleyball?”; if the students answer “Yes” or “No” she guides them to
complete the answers saying “Yes, I do” or “No, I don`t” and asking them for
repetition.
5. Presentation: (20’)
- The teacher invites the students to continue working with the yellow column
above presented as a poster on the board. She asks to the whole class “Do,
play or go?”. She shows pictures of the different sports and asks students
individually “do or play? play or go? What is the correct verb? …students
answer…” Ok, he plays tennis” (the pictures are at the end of the plan).
- Then, she invites different students to choose one of the cards above, and
answer the questions. The procedure is repeated a few times, and later the
same cards will be used to work in pairs in a conversation activity. Cards with
easier questions will be prepared for the students to choose in case they find
the others too difficult, for example:
Do you like sports?
Do you play soccer?
Do you play volleyball?
Do you go to the gym?
Do you watch TV?
Do you watch sports on TV?
Transition: “The Olympic Games are celebrated every four years in different countries, and
athletes from all over the world participate and gain medals. They were first celebrated in
Greece. I invite you to watch a video about the Olympic Games in order to think about
the origin of the Event”
Activity 1: Video (20´/25´) “All about the Olympics for kids: The History and symbols of the
Olympics: Free School” video available at YouTube
- The teacher will read aloud the following text while the students watch the
images. Firstly, she delivers handouts with the paragraphs for them to fill in the
blanks. She says, “You have to complete the blanks with these words…” and
she puts on the board the following words in cards and pictures: athletes,
competitions, race, boxing, long jump, chariot racing, winners, skiing,
Paralympics, summer, winter, wreath, blue, yellow, black, green, red, flag,
flame, torch, triumph (the pictures are at the end of the plan as Resources).
She guides the students to match each word with the correct picture “What is
this? Is it a paper?” “No? …students answer her... “No it isn´t… is it a flag?” …
students answer… “Yes?... yes, it is”. And she continues pointing to pictures
and asking the class which is the correct word.
6. - The teacher says “ok, now I invite you to watch this nice video and listen to me,
you have to complete the blanks in your handouts with the missing words…”.
- They watch the video (without audio) while she reads the completed handout;
it lasts about 5 minutes; they may be invited to watch it twice (the underlined
words will be missing).
Every four years, thousands of athletes in the world to compete in the Olympic Games.
They come from hundreds of countries from all parts of the Globe and during the games
the world celebrates peace and unity. But What are the Olympics?
The first Olympic Games took place in Greece in 776 BC. There were athletic competitions
in honor of Zeus the King of the gods. The Games happened every four years and during
the Games wars and battles were prohibited so that the athletes from different cities can
travel to and from the Games.
Originally the Olympic Games had only one event - a short race across the stadium, but
through the years more events were added including boxing, wrestling, long jump,
throwing javelin and discus and chariot racing. In The Ancient Olympics only men were
allowed to compete. The winners were awarded with money and other prizes. The final
Games of The Ancient Olympics were held in 393 AD ending a tradition of over a thousand
years. It wasn´t until fifteen hundreds of years later that someone tried to hold the
Olympics again. An International Committee was created in 1894 by Pierre de Coubertin of
France. The first games organized by IOC took place in Athens Greece in 1896 and
featured 221 athletes from 14 countries. Since that beginning many things have changed.
Women first competed in the Olympics in 1900. Winter sports were included like skiing
and special winter Olympic Games made that possible. The Paralympics began to be held
for athletes with disabilities. youth games were introduced which allow athletes around
14 and 18 to compete. Today the Olympic Games are held every two years in the summer
and in the winter (4 years between each summer and 4 years between each winter).
These are some of the differences between the Ancient Olympics and the Modern
Olympic Games. The Ancient Olympics were held in the same place each time. The
Modern Olympics are held in different cities around the world. In the Ancient Olympics
winners were awarded a wreath. But in the Modern Olympics the winners receive medals:
in 3rd place a bronze medal, in 2nd place silver medal, 1st place gets a gold medal. Another
important symbol of the Olympics are the rings. Five interlocking rings of blue, yellow,
black, green, and red. The colors in the rings were chosen because every flag in the world
at a time had at least one of those colors on it. Each of the rings represents one of the
Continents in the world. North and South America are counted as one. Along with Africa,
7. Asia, Europe and Australia. Another important symbol of the Olympic Games, is the
Olympic flame or torch. It is a reminder of an Ancient Greek myth about Zeus. Before each
Olympics, the torch is lit in an special ceremony. During the official end of the games the
flame is put out. The goal of the Olympics is to help to build a more peaceful world
through International Cooperation, friendship and love for sports. The most important
thing in the Olympics is not to win but to take part as it is in life, not triumph but to
struggle.
- The teacher continues “Did you complete it? Yes?, ok who starts?... Every four
years thousands of?... athletes?... students answer…yes, you are right…
athletes… very good”. She continues reading and asking the students for the
words they wrote down, individually or as a class.
Transition: “Excellent! Did you like it?...let`s think about these athletes and what they
have done…”
Activity 2: (15´)
The teacher draws two columns on the board and writes the following titles:
I have played volleyball.
(at any time in the past)
I haven’t played soccer.
(at an indefinite point in the past)
- On the left of the columns she puts images of different athletes (the pictures
are at the end of the plan), playing sports and guides students to say sentences
using Present Perfect: “Pay attention to this woman, what has she done?... she
has… students answer ...ok yes… she has played tennis” and she writes the
sentence in the column. She continues, let´s think about a negative sentence,
“she… haven`t or hasn`t? … students answer…ok yes… she hasn´t… she hasn’t
played basketball…” and she writes the sentences in the correct column. She
8. repeats the process, calling the students’ attention to other pictures, other
women, a man, children playing sports, etc., for the students to practise, saying
sentences in the Present Perfect Tense.
Transition: “Good job! Let´s continue saying sentences aloud…”
Activity 3: (15’)
- The teacher says, “well, now I want you to tell me what sports you have played
and what sports you haven´t played, for example: ...”, and she writes on the
board, while she says the sentences aloud.
I HAVE PLAYED VOLLEYBALL. I HAVEN’T PLAYED HOCKEY.
- She continues inviting each student by his or her name to participate saying his
or her sentences aloud “Can you continue, please? she says.
Transition: “Ok, let’s finish the lesson speaking about sports again”
Closure (15’):
- The teacher says “Here I have the cards we used at the beginning of the class, I
want you to ask and answer using them in groups, I will walk around to listen
to you”. She indicates the students to sit in small groups, to do the speaking
activity and gives them the cards, Then, she monitors them.

has been really productive, have a nice week!”
