6. Being plurilingual
• Is seen as an exceptional situation
• It‟s being monolingual that is the exception
• France : “ideology of standard” (Milroy & Milroy 1985)
+ solid monolingual situation (loss of regional languages,
bilinguals seen as less competent in their 2 languages, …)

• « Certain languages, including widely used ones such as
English, French and Spanish, are believed by their
speakers to exist in standardized forms, and this kind of
belief affects the way in which speakers think about their
own language and about „language‟ in general. » (Milroy,
2001: 530)

7. Observer’s paradox
• For our students, experiencing plurilingual situations is
rather rare but most important for their representations
of language and culture in the world.
And in particular :
• Code-switching : occurs when a speaker alternates
between two or more languages in the context of a single
conversation.
• “The aim of linguistic research in the community must be
to find out how people talk when they are not being
systematically observed; yet we can only obtain this data
by systematic observation.” (Labov, 1972 : 209)
