EIM is the management and governance of data and
information from its creation through its active use and
eventual retirement. This could be information or data that
is:
• used within a single application
• leveraged across an organization
SAP Enterprise Information Management covers all types
of information:
• data that is structured

• content such as documents, email, pdfs, audio and video

Industry requirement for risk related data analysis. All data must meet quality levels and
industry standards.
Example: Ensure all associated content (documents, invoices, etc) are always linked to
financial contracts.
True cost assessment of manufacturing goods in the manufacturing industry
Example: Analyzing total costs for making and delivering products.
Crossing multiple business domains, data must be cleansed, duplicates removed, and
correlations created to ensure analysis provides accurate information.
Real-time data analysis for reduction of fuel costs in the transportation

Example: Harmonized master data across disparate applications enables a single view of
supplier-spend. Duplicates are reduced, products harmonized, enabling a holistic view on
supplier spend.

Data management of key master data such as well management in the oil and
gas industry
Oil and gas companies have thousands of wells, with well information stored in many
different types of systems. The overall production versus cost of the well is only known
through the synthesis and linkage of the data across the enterprise.
Suspect tracking in the public security industry
Federal, local, state agencies must share information on criminal activity and suspect
tracking. Data management ensures each new suspect is compared to others to ensure it is
a unique suspect. Data quality rules can ensure the most up-to-date information is available
for suspect tracking.

When talking about workflow and process design, several issues always
come up for discussion. Three common issues include:
• Ownership – who owns the process? Workflow is a business-focused process that
technologists help implement. The workflow itself is driving a business process and
completely owned by the business, and will only succeed when there are clear business
owners.
• Understanding the results – defining what will be different after the
workflow is in production is also critical. Will PO’s get approved faster; will repair
response time be reduced? It is important to know what will be different after the workflow
is in production.
• User involvement – at the end of the day, the true end user determines the success of
the workflow and they will judge the workflow by their experience with the inbox. Users and
stakeholder alignment is key to the success of any workflow project.

Common issues with data governance:
Define what data governance means at your company – ensuring you have
executive sponsorship, having a definition of the real meaning and impact of
data on your core processes
• Who owns the data: example is ‘who owns the material’; it is used in many
processes by various departments. This becomes analogous to the process that
crosses organizational boundaries. The core material may be owned by a one
data steward, and each plant/sales view owned by others, and then owned at a
higher level by a global data steward (so now you need workflow to enforce data
governance!).
• Choose a key initiative as a test case- when it comes to data governance, it
is important you start with something that can really prove your
case. Oftentimes the best place to start is a project around customer data since it impacts
so many areas of the business, and oftentimes you only have to look at postage and
shipping costs to determine dollar savings with correct customer data

Workflow and process experts should align and collaborate closely with the
data governance and data steward experts because:
1. Both groups understand the importance of getting the right people on
board. Without the right organizational and user support, both types of
projects will fail.
2. Both groups know what it is like to have to ‘prove’ yourselves and the
results. Workflow experts and data governance experts know how to start
small and build on success.
3. Data drives the business process. Workflow folks understand the
business process well and how the process flows through the
organization, that knowledge can be key to ensuring the data is correctly
driving the business process.

validating, migrating, converting, analyzing
Data management covers comprehensive breadth and depth of capabilities for
the management of data. This includes a single platform for:
• assessing your data to determine its quality level
• enforcement of data quality
• cleansing and pattern matching to duplication detection
• transformation of data from disparate source systems, including textual data
such as survey text or text from websites / user reviews
• validation of data
• migration and conversion of data.

Enterprise Content Management provides complete management for
unstructured content associated with the process that is not stored with the
core transaction data. This type of content can include:
• Scanned images, invoices, documents, contracts, pictures, emails, etc
• Example: Invoices scanned and passed through an OCR engine can trigger an
automated invoice approval process
• Example: Creation of personalized billing statements that combine SAP data with
unstructured content and appropriate marketing offers

- 18. Intelligence driven Complex Event Processing
SAP’s Enterprise Information Management capabilities include a complex
event-drive processing application that can help you understand the impact of

• Example: correlation of complaints in the last day with returns and quality issues
in the last month.
• Example: receive immediate alerts when a region’s sales for the day drop below
an expected threshold.

- 21. Where to start with Enterprise Information Management
• Start with data migration. The next time you need to migrate new data into your existing
SAP system, or if you are implementing a new SAP application, use the data migration
capabilities provided by Enterprise Information Management.
• Consider data quality inside of ERP, such that when a new business partner is entered the
addresses are cleansed and duplicates are checked.
• Analyze your customer data. Do you have sales people who fix data instead of selling? Do
you have shipments delayed due to incorrect customer data? The customer domain
normally provides immediate business process improvement with the investment of governed
customer data.
• Include data management capabilities on your next migration project. Don’t just move the
data, cleanse and validate it, then reuse the same tools to keep it clean after the migration.
• Integrate content such as scanned images, documents, emails with the data objects in the
SAP application system.
• Look at the integration of data into your applications today and pick the top 3 areas where
data management and cleansing could save real dollars and/or processing time.
