Understanding Impact of Ceramic
Armour Materials (UNICAM)
• Aim:
– To develop an understanding of the effect of
ceramic microstructure on the ballistic
performance of armour ceramics

• Rationale:
– Selection of ceramics for armour applications
is based on test data, by attempting to
understand the effect of the microstructure on
performance it is hoped future ceramics can
be ‘designed’ for armour applications

Slide 28 of 55
Rapid Aeroelastic and Structural
Analysis Model builder (RASAM)
• Aim:
– Rapid modelling of air structures to allow
analysis of loading and aeroelasticity without
CAD generation

• Rationale:
– Current modelling packages take many man
hours to design a structure.By reducing the
time taken, a greater number of designs can be
considered

Ultra-High Temperature Ceramics
• Aim:
– To develop a multi-scale approach to understanding the failure
and damage mechanisms in ultra-high temperature ceramics

• Rationale:
– Ultra-high temperature ceramics offer unique thermal
performance, however understanding their failure mechanism
will permit application

Slide 37 of 55
Low observables (LO)
• LO applications span radio to microwave frequencies,
infrared to ultraviolet wavelengths and airborne and
underwater acoustic environments
• Example studies could include:
– Transitioning transformation electromagnetics from a
mathematical method into a usable design tool integrated into
off-the-shelf tools
– Multi-scale modelling of particulate-filled coatings linking
microscopic properties to macroscopic coating performance

Slide 38 of 55
High strain rate applications
• Modelling of the deformation and failure of materials
via appropriate brittle and/or plastic failure modes
may provide insight into the performance of materials
• Changing mechanisms with increasing strain rate
must be considered
• For example, novel scale bridging techniques could
be applied to link atomistic effects to those observed
during ballistic events

Slide 39 of 55
Lightweight damage tolerant
structures
• Defence structures are required to provide both low
mass and high damage tolerance in a wide range of
environments
• ICMSE could generate novel designs improving
performance against these criteria
• For example the use of genetic algorithms could be
applied to design and optimise material combinations
or structural designs

DSTL/PUB77392

UNCLASSIFIED
Slide 40 of 55
Multi-functional materials
• Adding functionality to currently used materials could
provide an advantage through reduced burden,
increased system redundancy, or additional capability
• Combining multiple areas of physics in a single model
• For example:
– How do the electrical properties of a material change during
high strain rate deformation?
– Monitoring mechanical performance during chemical changes
such as corrosion or thermal cycling

Slide 41 of 55
Through Life Capability Management
• Performance and behaviour of materials, both
metallic and polymeric, will through their life cycle
depend upon the environmental conditions
(temperature, humidity, UV, etc) experienced
• Understanding the effects of these conditions upon
the material and predicting the aging of materials
could support military decision making
