Master of Public Health
In addition to being involved in numerous organizations and programs throughout metro
Detroit, Ibtissam spent 7 weeks in Tanzania participating in a medical mission in which
allowed her to gain first hand experience on the importance of public health policies and
programs. Not only did this trip solidify Ibtissam's interest in pursing a Masters in public
health, but it also led her to acknowledge how socioeconomic and cultural factors play as
much a role in our health as regulatory healthcare policies do. Upon completion of the
MPH program, Ibtissam now feels prepared and confident to enter the workforce as a
public health officer for developing nations.
Program in Public Health Practicum Experience
Ibtissam worked alongside Dr. Connie Currier and Ms. Linda Gordon taking part in a
research study that took place in Larteh, Ghana. There they assessed the role of
traditional medicine in the treatment of malaria. Understanding traditional medicine
practices and use in Larteh is necessary in order to enact culturally relevant public health
interventions.

7. Program in Public Health Practicum Experience
Vector control, specifically mosquito control is of importance to public health as
diseases such as West Nile may pose significant harm to the public. This was the
inspiration for Melissa’s practicum. Her aim was to study what microbial
interactions were necessary as they are deposited in the water through the natural
egg laying of adults at the Walker Insect Microbiology Laboratory. The
understanding of what is necessary for growth would provide information about
potential control mechanisms.
Melissa Baker
Master of Public Health
8. Though always interested in medicine and health, Kayla was largely unfamiliar with the
field of public health until after the completion of her undergraduate degree. It was at
this point that she became interested in Emergency Medical Services and the role of
EMS systems in public health emergencies. She would like to work in these two
interrelated fields in the future.
Kayla Baughman

10. Katelin’s Nutritional Science degree from MSU expanded her knowledge on all aspects of
nutrition. She was able to study abroad through the International Food Law program to gain
an international view on the nutrients and food we all consume. The experience encouraged
her to return to school and sparked her interest in public health. She looks forward to
working for a governmental agency or health department to improve the health of the
community.
Program in Public Health Practicum Experience
Working under Teresa Pawl-Knapp, Katelin learned about the way Feeding America West
Michigan Food bank in Comstock Park, MI is run throughout the state of Michigan. The Food
banks that are part of the Feeding America network across the nation by helping reduce the
hunger in America by increasing the nutrient intake of people in need. They are a part of
public health interventions reducing the risk of diseases associated with poor nutrition.
Katelin Blackmer
Master of Public Health
12. As a premedical undergraduate student, Tate participated in the four-week long study
abroad program "Public Health in Ghana." Although it was her first introduction to public
health, Tate was immediately drawn to the subject and desired further study in it. In
addition to completing her MPH, she is enrolled in medical school and is eager to use her
degrees to promote health and wellness. During her study, Tate has gained a wealth of
knowledge regarding the importance of public health which will make her an exceptional
physician. She is looking forward to her future endeavors in medicine and public health.
Program in Public Health Practicum Experience
Working with Dr. Robert Gee of the Behavioral Sciences Department at Ross
University School of Medicine Tate conducted a survey to learn more about
the attitudes and perceptions of international medical students regarding
the use of vaccinations in medicine. With widespread social media and the
current environment of suspicion regarding the effectiveness and safety of
current vaccines, there has been a recent resurgence of preventable
diseases. It is important to recognize these issues and the impact they will
have on the future of public health and healthcare.
Tate Bonifer

Hillary worked with the Maricopa County Department’s Office of Community
Empowerment’s Preventative health Collaborative to gain exposure to the structure
of the department as well as how to implement programs in the county. Additionally,
by the end of the practicum her goal was to have an understanding of collaborative
efforts in order to strengthen the public health of the county.
21. Sonia Fuentes
Master of Public Health
Working with Disability Determination services, Sonia Fuentes was frustrated at seeing
hundreds of claims of individuals who were no longer able to work because of health
problems. She decided that it was time to learn more about the prevention side of health and
why people suffered significant loss of functioning due to manageable diseases such as
Diabetes and Asthma. The MPH program has allowed Sonia to gain insight into the root
causes of health inequities and how they impact individuals. She hopes to use the
information that she has learned to educate and empower others to improve their health.
Program in Public Health Practicum Experience
The Office of Public Health Emergency Preparedness (OPHEP) is the emergency “response
arm” of the Michigan Department of Community Health, and is responsible for preparing for
and coordinating the department’s response to emergencies that affect the public’s health.
The office maintains two federally-funded and aligned programs. These are the Healthcare
Preparedness Program (HPP) and the Public Health Emergency Preparedness (PHEP)
program
