Causes Of Lassa Fever/Transmission
The deadly fever is caused by a specie of rat called mastomys natalensis. Whennever such rat
gets in touch with object used by human, anyone coming in contact with such object, will
contract the disease. This is why you are advised to kill any rat around you and never get in
touch with its body. Dispose it with an object and then, burn the object. It can be transmitted
through person-to-person contact via fluid (blood, saliva, urine).
Though, in West Africa, 100, 000 to 300, 000 cases are recorded annually with about 5000
deaths.

2. Symptoms
Early signs are headache, fever. Later sign (chronic stage) is bleeding through nose, eye, mouth
(vomitting).
Remember, it is not caused by every rat but we must not take chances. Let us go back to our
primary hygiene.
Origin
Lassa fever was first diagnosed in a village called Lassa in Bornu state. It was in 1969, when two
missionary sisters died of an unknown disease. This made the name of the disease after the
village (Lassa).
Note that, it is curable unlike ebola but if not quickly attended to, by the right health personnel, it
kills faster than ebola.
