[Instrumental]
Tess and Lily are a young indie-folk duo. The overall tone of the
song is more melancholic than a typical song of this genre,
which I plan to reflect in the music video through the use of
muted colours and generally darker elements. I visualise the
overall style to be either completely monochromatic or dark with
high contrasting but well-saturated shots. Towards the end, the
colour scheme will alter slightly to fit with the storyline. I want to
use a multitude of locations, all outdoors, to create a natural
feel which will conform to the typical conventions of the genre.
This will include a heavily wooded forest and open space, and a
busy city centre. The overall aim is to emphasise the difference
between the girls and their surroundings, whilst conveying a
simple narrative. I’m also considering interspersing these
sequences with double exposure shots of the two band
members, to add an innovative, less conventional edge.
INITIAL IDEAS
The video will have a very loose narrative,
whereby the girls will be searching for
something unbeknownst to the viewer, and at
the end it is found but we are still left in the
dark. This is to hopefully engage the viewer
with the story, whilst giving the music video a
sense of purpose. The concept of having the
object completely unbeknownst to the viewer
is inspired by the music video for Hozier –
Take Me To Church. The video features a
box that is chained up, and we never get to
see the contents. This is very engaging,
albeit slightly frustrating. This narrative will
be interspersed with shots of the band
performing the song in different locations.
NARRATIVE
CITY CENTRE:
The two girls will be standing amongst a
busy crowd of people who will all be bustling
around and going about their daily business.
In this section I want the girls to be standing
completely still, staring at the camera so that
I can speed up/slow down/reverse the
footage as necessary in post, whilst they
remain unmoving. This is inspired by the
music video for George Ezra - Barcelona.
I also want to utilise the technique from my
test footage whereby I altered the speed of
the song during the filming so I could
manipulate the speed of the final product.
This sequence in the music video will be
filmed with the band lip syncing quickly so
that when it’s slowed down they seem to be
singing at a normal speed, yet everyone
around them is moving slowly.
LOCATION SPECIFIC IDEAS
FOREST/OPEN SPACE:
The girls will be searching amongst the trees for this
unknown object and dancing around, which will all be
converted to slow motion. Towards the end, the will
leave the heavily wooded area and enter a clearing.
Lots of lens flare and cinematographic shots. I will be
filming the girls from the front as they walk out and
we see their expressions change to that of euphoria
right at the end.
Because the band consists of two 15 year old females, I want to ensure that they aren’t
misrepresented. Currently there are lots of issues with the media, in the sense that women
are often objectified or sexualised. I want my music video to be the complete opposite of
this; it will conveying a sense of female empowerment and independence. The girls will
therefore be wearing typical everyday clothing and won’t be playing up to the camera.
However, I will still be using lots of close ups when filming to conform to Goodwin’s theory
that: “There is a demand for lots of close ups of the main artist/vocalist”. I feel that this is
essential as it helps the viewer to recognise the band themselves.
The music video must conform to the girls’ individual style and alternative personalities,
whilst representing their more adolescent side. The video will be professional in style and
quality, but I want to show that the girls are still quite young, which will therefore appeal to
the younger generation.
