Xerte - the student perspective

  1. 1. DiANE’S PERSPECTIVE • Creating object as an ambassador - not as part of a module • My remit – to create a learning object using xerte that would engage students
  2. 2. STYLE GUIDE • 21-page Word document • Originally created by Dr Joanna Huntington • A resource explaining general presentation of assessments: grammar, quotations, footnotes and bibliography
  3. 3. XERTE STYLE GUIDE • I created 4 learning objects - less daunting – 10-20 minutes per object • Information in style guide basis for the objects • Added: relevant images hyperlinks to resources interactive pages
  4. 4. cons • Sourcing images and/videos legally! • Easy to lose work as can’t undo – can’t use CTRL + Z • Difficult to transfer work to another learning object once built – have to rebuild it
  5. 5. pros • Creating own website without having to have any knowledge of coding • being able to add interactive pages – more engaging • Incorporate images that reinforced the textual content • Add hyperlinks to relevant resources
  6. 6. Paige’s perspective • Used xerte as a group to display our own ideas about primary sources • The main purpose of the object was to: 1. Convey research in an engaging way 2. Teach your audience 3. Demonstrate your own knowledge and understanding
  7. 7. pros • Xerte was useful in the assignment - it tested the students knowledge through interactivity. • May help students who learn in different ways, such as visual learners. • An alternative way to demonstrate students’ knowledge of a topic rather than just essays
  8. 8. cons • Working in a group with xerte was difficult – much easier to do it individually • Not all students adapt well to technology • When there is a problem with xerte the forum on www.xerte.org.uk is the only help available • Still needs improvements as it can be ‘glitchy’ and work on certain computers but not others
  9. 9. Differences of producing and consuming xerte objects • Producing the objects is more beneficial as xerte is a creative output for students and is a different way to display their knowledge. • Consuming the objects can be useful for students due to the interactive elements of xerte. Therefore, I believe xerte would be best to create revision resources.
