Workplace dismissals
Before the dismissal If an
employer wants to dismiss an
employee, there is a process
to be followed.
Firstly, you should be given an
improvement note. This will
explain the problem, outline
any necessary changes and
offer some assistance in
correcting the situation. Then,
if your employer does not
think your performance has
improved, you may be given
a written warning. The last
step is called a final written
warning which will inform you
that you will be dismissed
unless there are
improvements in
performance. If there is no
improvement, your employer
can begin the dismissal
procedure.
26. An employee is asked to leave work straight away because
he has done something really bad.
A Fair dismissal B Summary dismissal C Unfair dismissal
Dismissals
Of the various types of dismissal, a fair dismissal
is the best kind if an employer wants an employee
out of the workplace. A fair dismissal is legally and
contractually strong and it means all the necessary
procedures have been correctly followed. In cases
where an employee’s misconduct has been very
serious, however, an employer may not have to
follow all of these procedures. If the employer can
prove that the employee’s behavior was illegal,
dangerous or severely wrong, the employee can be
dismissed immediately: a procedure known as
summary dismissal.
27. Writing Task 1
Your local newspaper wants to reward people who
have contributed a lot to the community.
Write a letter to the newspaper. In your letter:
- suggest someone who deserves the reward
- mention what they have done to help the
community
- say what reward you would like to give this
person
Write about 150 words. You do not need to write
addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear…
28. Model Answer
Dear Sir / Madam ,
I read in last week’s edition of the White Horse News that you are
keen to reward local people who have made significant
contributions to the community . I would like to put my mother ,
Mrs . Gillian Summerton , forward for this reward .
My mother is a schoolteacher , and has done much to enrich the
lives of the young people in her care . In her free time , she
continues to give up her time to help people . She runs a ladies’
choir which is a superb opportunity for local women to get
together and enjoy themselves . Moreover , the choir performs
free of charge at charity events , and consequently my mother has
been fundamental in both raising large sums of money and
bringing pleasure to people .
I know that my mother does not need a financial reward for her
services to the community , as it gives her a lot of pleasure .
However , I’m sure that she would appreciate formal recognition
for her work , perhaps in the form of a donation to her preferred
charity , the Red Cross .
Thank you for your attention ,
29. The table below shows CO2 emissions for different forms of
transport in the European Union. The Pie Chart shows the
percentage of European Union funds being spent on different
forms of transport.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information
shown below.
30. Transport in the European Union
The chart shows CO2 emissions per passenger kilometer for various
methods of transport in the European Union while the pie chart shows
European Union spending on transport . Flying by air produces by far the
greatest CO2 emissions , approximately three times as much as passenger
cars which are the next largest producers!
Very little is spent by the EU on air travel while roads make up more than
half of the EU transport budget .
Trains produce about three times less CO2 emissions per passenger
kilometer than passenger cars and eight times less than air travel . Nearly a
third of EU transport funds are spent on railways .
Ships are a clean form of transport and produce about the same amount of
CO2 per passenger kilometer as trains do . However , only 2 percent of EU
funds are spent on ports . A further one percent is spent on inland
waterways .
Coaches are the cleanest form of transport . Emissions of CO2 per
passenger kilometer from coaches are half those of buses . Buses emit less
than half as much CO2 per passenger kilometer as cars . The European
union spends 10 percent of its transport budget on public transport , such
as buses and coaches .

The increase in mobile phone use in recent years has
transformed the way we live, communicate and do
business. Mobile phones can also be the cause of social
or medical problems. What forms do these problems
take?
Do you think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages
of mobile phones?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant
examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Write at least 250 words.
32. Benefits and disadvantages of mobile phones
Mobile phones have transformed the lives of nearly
everyone on the planet in the last few years . They have
made communication easy and cheap between friends ,
family and businesses . The phones are not only used for
speech and text messages but increasingly to browse the
internet , to read email , to play games or to pay for
products . In many countries , particularly those with slow
network connections , the internet is something that
happens on a mobile phone rather than on a computer .
There are also disadvantages to using mobile phones .
Keeping a powerful device transmitting waves and heat
next to your ear for long periods of time may be harmful to
heavy users of mobile phones . There are also social
problems related to mobile phone use . Walking around
with a phone glued to your ear may prevent you from
interacting with other people..
Significant those these drawbacks may be , the huge
convenience of the mobile phone will ensure that its use
continues to change our lives .

the question.
What do you think your life will look like
after retirement? Use reasons and details
to support your response.
Preparation time: 15 seconds
Response time: 45 seconds
45. Sample response
I don't see myself as a person who will ever fully
retire. I like to keep busy, and I have trouble
relaxing. If I want to spend a few hours reading or
listening to music I usually schedule it into my date
book. I find that if I don't force myself to relax from
time to time I always find some sort of project or
work to do. Though I may not want to hold a paying
job in the medical field when I am older, I will
probably volunteer in a third world country rather
than retire. I'm lucky that I've found work that I am
interested in. If I grow tired of my job I may feel
differently when the time comes.
