3. INTRODUCTION
• Can be understood as a modification of nasya karma
• Administration of large quantity of medicine through nasa marga.
• Mainly used in vatavyadhi, specifically urdhwajatrugata vyadhi
• References can be found in chakradatta, bhavaprakasha, vangasena
and bhaishajya ratnavali
4. NIRUKTI
• नासेन पीयते इतत नासापान|| (shabda kalpadruma)
Administration of medicine through the nasal route for ingestion
Larger quantity of medicine in the form of sneha or kashaya
• 2 words- nasa+pana
• Nasa- nose; pana-Pibenartha, intake, to drink.
• According to Hemachandra “Piyate yasmaditi; pa+vyapadane lut iti
jataradhara”.
• Pana means that which resides in Jathara (stomach)

highly elevated and with the
help of left thumb patient‟s
nose raised simultaneously with
the right hand
• the medicine is poured into the
nostril at a stretch with the
constant pressure over the bulb.
• The same procedure should be
repeated for other nostril also.

14. • Most of the drugs used in the Nasapana are either Kaphavata Shamaka or Vata Shamaka
some of the drugs are Teekshana such as Hingu, Saindhava and Eranda Moola.
• They produce irritation of the nasal mucosa which increases the nasal secretions as a
result of increased circulation
• Probably generates a chemical impulse which is further transformed into electrical
impulse which is finally converted into a neuronal impulse.
• This neuronal impulse influences on cerebral cortical areas thereby producing a
stimulatory effect leading to evacuation of Dosha.
• Also the irritant effect of Nasapana Dravya increases blood circulation to the brain. So
the accumulated morbid Doshas are expelled out through small blood vessels.
• Ultimately the morbid Dosha are thrown out along the nasal discharge, tears and saliva.
• Also the Vatashamaka drugs and Brumahaniya drugs alleviate Vata .
• Hence probably these preparations can be applied in both Dhatuksayajanya and
Margavaranjanya Vata Vyadhis.
15. MODE OF ACTION (HYPOTHETICAL)
• It can be understood by following concepts:
• Absorption via nasal mucosa
• Absorption via gut.
• Absorption via nasal mucosa
• Many nerve endings which are arranged in the peripheral surface of
mucous membrane that is, olfactory, trigeminal etc. will be stimulated
by Nasapana Dravya and impulses are transferred through central
nervous system.
• This results in better circulation and nourishment of the organs.
• Many drugs absorbed through the rich blood supply of the nasal
mucosa enter the systemic circulation more rapidly than administered
orally.
16. • Absorption via gut
1. Administation of the drug.
• Absorption from the site of administration into the bloodstream.
2. Distribution to other parts of the body, including the target site.
• An important step in all these processes is the movement of drug
molecules through cellular barriers (eg intestinal walls).
• Phagocytosis is one more process where the absorptive cells engulf the
material and exerts its action.
• After the Dravya is administered into the gut, absorption is accomplished
with the help of enterocytes.
• The end products are absorbed mainly in the intestines through the villi.
Each villus is connected to the circulatory and lymphatic systems.
• The Dravyas are absorbed with the help of energy by an enzyme and the
sodium ion cofactor.
• Absorbed drug enter directly into the circulatory system and fat soluble
into lymphatic system by the absorptive cells of villi, which then go to the
liver via portal vein for metabolism.
17. ADVANTAGES OF NASAPANA OVER NASYA
• Larger dosage, more contact time
• Nasal and GI absorption
• Shodhana and shamana action
18. JALA NETI
• Neti is one among the shatkriyas of hata yoga
• Technique to cleanse the nasal passage
• 2 types: jala neti; sutra neti
• Jala neti: using neti pot filled with luke warm saline water.(2-3.5%
concentration)
• The neti pot is held at one nostril, contents are instilled into one
nostril and flows out through the other nostrils.
19. BENEFITS OF JALA NETI
• Neti removes all the dirt and bacteria filled mucusfrom the nasal cavity
• Helps to drain sinus cavity which helps to reprogramme the body's natural
mechanism against nasal infections
• Thinning remaining mucus so that sinuses and Ostia don't clog
• Decreasing swelling of the nasal mucosa
• Removing histamine, leukotrienes, and other inflammatory substances
• Promotes removal of muccus, crusts and debris
• It has cooling and soothing effect on the brain by drawing out excessive heat and
therefore beneficial for headaches and mental tension
• Has a positive influence on all sense organs in thehead.
• Strengthens vision and relieves tired eyes (eg. after working long hours at the
computer).
• Neti can also cure or at least case hay fever and pol- len allergies.
20. POSSIBLE MODE OF ACTION
• The saline in jalaneti has laghu teekshna guna, sukshma and vyavayi
making it possible for the drug to reach anu srotas and expel the
doshas
• Presence of salts acts as vasodilator, local cleanser and immunity
booster
• Warm water has antiinflamatory action in the nasal mucosa
21. USHAPANA
• Dinacharya procedure explained in Bhavaprakasha-
• drinking 8 prasruta of jala, enhances longevity.
