important.
During lactation, as during pregnancy, your
body nourishes your baby’s body. Just as your
blood carried the nutrients your baby needed to
grow and develop in the womb, your milk
furnishes all the nutrients your baby needs after
birth. Mothers over the world make good
quality milk for their babies, many of them
with less than adequate diets for themselves
A mother’s body guards valuable nutrients
during pregnancy and lactation. Calcium, for
example, is absorbed more efficiently and less
is excreted. There’s no need to obsess about
having to eat ‘just right’ while breastfeeding.
In a nutshell, good nutrition while
breastfeeding means eating foods that are good
for you and a bit more than you would
normally consume.

Although pregnancy is a natural process, it still puts strain on your body. The body also needs to
expend energy for healing after birth, and if there has been significant blood loss, iron and other
nutrients must be replaced. Furthermore, breast milk production, believe it or not, requires even
greater caloric intake than does pregnancy. This is because you are continuing to provide primary
nourishment for a rapidly growing baby undergoing not only enormous physical development, but
also tremendous brain development in the first six months after birth.
A healthy mother’s child always remains healthy. Postpartum diet
and traditional recipes play an important role in maintaining
mother’s health. Fast paced urban life, crisis of time management
along with non-availability of quality raw material for postpartum
diet has resulted many important local recipes thrown out of the
urban kitchen. Neglected postpartum care affects not only to the
new mother, but also it takes toll of newborn infant. Neglecting
proper postpartum diet and care can result a mental blockage in new
moms. Irritation, depression and lethargy are few signs of a mother
who did not follow postpartum diet suggested by doctors and age-
old family members. The metal blockage and depression can have
toxic consequences. Internal, external, social, hormonal, financial,

General Postpartum Care
During the first few days postpartum, many women are nervous about having a bowel movement
soon after birth. Avoiding constipation and difficult elimination is the key to healthy digestion. Eat
plenty of fruits and vegetables, drink ample quantities of water and keep away from hard-to-digest
foods.
This is definitely not an appropriate time to diet. Your body, especially if you are nursing, naturally
will lose weight after birth. However, returning to your pre-pregnancy size usually takes several
months, at least. A healthy diet and moderate exercise over time will ensure this. Dieting only serves
to deprive you and the baby of essential nutrients. If you have gained excessive weight during
pregnancy, or simply want to be trimmer than you are now, having just given birth, an excellent
balanced diet is the best way to meet your goals. Speak with your doctor for information on how to
eat right for breastfeeding, or seek the assistance of a qualified nutritional consultant. Adjusting your
diet to include healthful, high-quality foods protects your nutritional status, allows you to produce
abundant milk and helps get your weight under control.
The confinement period lasts for forty days after the day of delivery. These are the points which can
be taken care of during this period
1. Covering of head: During the confinement period, in Indian tradition, the mother’s head is
covered with a scarf during day time. This is to prevent the loss of body heat through the
head and it also helps to avoid catching ear infections or cold
2. Body massages: Daily hot oil body massage is given to the mother. In the case of a C-
section, oil massage will be done only after the stitches are healed. Massages are done with
nourishing oils such as Olive oil, Coconut oil, and Sesame oil. Massage with Sesame oil is
the traditional method as the property of this oil in controlling stress and pressure and its
cooling effect. Coconut oil is usually used for head massage. As it is quickly absorbed by the
skin, the stretch marks are found to reduce when this oil is applied in the belly area
3. Bath: Hot water is poured in the lower abdomen and pelvic area. Usually, Neem leaves are
put along with water while boiling. Neem leaves, as we all know, are antiseptic. Soaps are
replaced with Chickpea powder mixed with milk cream
Post-partum Diet
The food items given during confinement period as per Indian tradition are rich in ingredients that
promote lactation, digestion and resistance against infections. It mainly includes of ladoos, parathas,
and kheers. Ghee is added to almost every item that are prepared for the mother. Turmeric milk is
given on every morning. This is prepared by adding a pinch of freshly ground turmeric to milk while
boiling. Garlic milk which increases lactation is also given. Broken wheat porridge (Daliya) is given
as it reduces the chances of constipation. Roti made with millet is included in the diet as it is a rich
source of fiber aids digestion. Khichdi made of moong dal and rice is served as it is a rich source of
carbohydrates. Ajwain parathas which are good for lactation is a dinner option. Water is boiled with
Saunf seeds and is given to mother frequently to increase the breast milk.
Postpartum Care (As suggested in Ayurveda)
According to Ayurveda good health depends up on the balance of three forces – vata, pitta and
kapha. Imbalance (dosha) of one of them causes ill health. Delivery related problems are due to the
vata dosha. This imbalance is treated in Ayurveda through rest, massages, food and herbal
preparations.
• Diet during confinement period: Diet during confinement period in Ayurveda is designed
in such a way to balance the vata dosha. The digestive system is also very sensitive during
this period so Ayurveda insists of start with eating easily digestible food and gradually go
back to regular diet towards the end of confinement period.
o Warm, fresh and oily food that tastes sweet.
o Sweetness providing food like honey, rice, fresh fruits or even yam, sour and salty
are focused
o Cold foods are avoided as they are hard to digest and will draw water from the body
causing constipation and promote gas formation
o Salads are also not recommended in Ayurveda during confinement period as they
create gas
o Timing and quantity of meals are another important factors. Breakfast around 8 am,
lunch around 1 pm, and dinner around 6 pm. Notice the 5-hour gap between each
meal. Breakfast and dinner should be light but the lunch should be heavy.
o Dried fruits can be taken but should remember to peel the skin of almonds
o Kashayams, lehyams and arishtams will be given to the mother to rebuilt the
resistance power, increasing the lactation, and rejuvenate the body after delivery
Remember, if you are not healthy and happy after delivery, it’s your child who will suffer more.

  • 2. Although pregnancy is a natural process, it still puts strain on your body. The body also needs to expend energy for healing after birth, and if there has been significant blood loss, iron and other nutrients must be replaced. Furthermore, breast milk production, believe it or not, requires even greater caloric intake than does pregnancy. This is because you are continuing to provide primary nourishment for a rapidly growing baby undergoing not only enormous physical development, but also tremendous brain development in the first six months after birth. A healthy mother’s child always remains healthy. Postpartum diet and traditional recipes play an important role in maintaining mother’s health. Fast paced urban life, crisis of time management along with non-availability of quality raw material for postpartum diet has resulted many important local recipes thrown out of the urban kitchen. Neglected postpartum care affects not only to the new mother, but also it takes toll of newborn infant. Neglecting proper postpartum diet and care can result a mental blockage in new moms. Irritation, depression and lethargy are few signs of a mother who did not follow postpartum diet suggested by doctors and age- old family members. The metal blockage and depression can have toxic consequences. Internal, external, social, hormonal, financial, physical and mental pressure also plays a triggering role. Traditional food, recipes and preparations can combat it. Abhumka Herbal is deeply engrossed in formulizing age-old tribal herbal knowledge into finished products.
