Railway urban systems are complex interconnected systems combining heterogeneous components (Control system based on some hardware and software components, communication devices and physical plant) One important maintenance function for Alstom is to update a coherent configuration in a secure manner. In this work, this function is performed by the SODA-IIoT infrastructure developed within IRT SystemX. The configuration parameters (firmware, OS, drivers, applications, operation parameters...) of these computational nodes are updated through a blockchain infrastructure (with redundant nodes) and secure gateways (manage access rights and secure communications). In this manner, the integrity of a new configuration is ensured and with high availability.

Co-designed with PSA Group and Valeo, SODA-IIoT4Automotive offers a secure way to update automotive ECU software/firmware. Automotive vehicles are composed of several dozens of Electronic Control Units (ECU). With the increasing connectivity of the vehicles, the update of the ECU software will soon be performed Over-The-Air (OTA). This includes the update of the in-vehicle infotainment, but also the more critical ECUs such as the body, motion and Advanced Driving Assistance Systems (ADAS) ECUs. For PSA and Valeo the accountability and the availability of ECU software updates are crucial, particularly for security patches which require a fast deployment.

A blockchain infrastructure, combined with cryptographic signatures, can improve availability and accountability for the deployment of IoT updates. However, cars with limited or intermittent Internet access may have difficulties in downloading full updates from the blockchain. Therefore, we allow cars that successfully downloaded updates to share them with other cars by means of a Peer-to-Peer (P2P) mechanism.

The aim of the Internet of Things is to provide valuable information about everything around us. Citizens demand open access to know directly what happens in their cities without any intermediary. But nowadays we are impacted by countless news our sources and is very difficult to digest it. Over-information is the new way of hiding information. If we demand context and facts instead of dumb numbers, the biggest legacy of the internet of things will be a world that is more transparent and democratic. Smart solutions also improve citizens daily lives by controlling pollution levels, providing alerts against medical epidemics or managing cities' traffic. Libelium technology has been applied worldwide. During Fukushima crisis after the tsunami in 2011 we developed a sensor board to measure radiation. As a result, a series of boards were shipped at no charge to the Tokyo Hackerspace and other working groups in Japan to allow citizens monitoring autonomously radiation levels. With MySignals, an eHealth development platform, we want to cover one of the main challenges of the century: enhancing the universal accessibility to a healthcare system for more than 2 billion people worldwide.

You want to implement a Big Data or Internet of Things (IoT) solution and like to know if it should be implemented in the cloud or on-premises. You are interested in the cloud offerings of vendors and what benefits they provide and if a similar solution would not be possible on-premises. This presentation deals with this and other questions. Starting from a vendor-independent reference architecture and corresponding design patterns, different cloud solutions from various vendors are compared and rated. Additionally, it will be shown how such solution could be implemented on-premises and how a hybrid IoT solution could look like.

Data integration and processing is a huge challenge in Industrial IoT (IIoT, aka Industry 4.0 or Automation Industry) due to monolithic systems and proprietary protocols. Apache Kafka, its ecosystem (Kafka Connect, KSQL) and Apache PLC4X are a great open source choice to implement this integration end to end in a scalable, reliable and flexible way. This blog post covers a high level overview about the challenges and a good, flexible architecture. At the end, I share a video recording and the corresponding slide deck. These provide many more details and insights. Apache Kafka is the De-facto Standard for Real-Time Event Streaming. It provides Open Source (Apache 2.0 License) Global-scale Real-time Persistent Storage Stream Processing PCL4X allows vertical integration and to write software independent of PLCs using JDBC-like adapters for various protocols like Siemens S7, Modbus, Allen Bradley, Beckhoff ADS, OPC-UA, Emerson, Profinet, BACnet, Ethernet. Independent of the source of data, the integration of event streams into an Enterprise Architecture gets more and more important in the world of sensors, social media streams and Internet of Things. Events have to be accepted quickly and reliably, they have to be distributed and analysed, often with many consumers or systems interested in all or part of the events. Dependent on the size and quantity of such events, this can quickly be in the range of Big Data. How can we efficiently collect and transmit these events? How can we make sure that we can always report over historical events? How can these new events be integrated into traditional infrastructure and application landscape? Starting with a product and technology neutral reference architecture, we will then present different solutions using Open Source frameworks and the Oracle Stack both for on premises as well as the cloud.
