Alexander Hamilton Bridge HistoryAlexander Hamilton Bridge History
A new eight-lane arch span was
proposed - the Alexander Hamilton
Bridge – to connect the Trans-
Manhattan and Cross-Bronx
Expressways.
Currently, estimated traffic
over the Hamilton Bridge
is over 188,000 vehicles
per day.
The Alexander Hamilton
Bridge has not undergone
major repair since it opened
on January 15, 1963.
In 1955, Robert Moses determined that
the 181st
Street Bridge would not be able
handle the anticipated traffic demands
from the proposed lower level of the
George Washington Bridge.

  • 9. Alexander Hamilton Bridge ReconstructionNew York State Department of Transportation Region 11 Alexander Hamilton Bridge HistoryAlexander Hamilton Bridge History A new eight-lane arch span was proposed - the Alexander Hamilton Bridge – to connect the Trans- Manhattan and Cross-Bronx Expressways. Currently, estimated traffic over the Hamilton Bridge is over 188,000 vehicles per day. The Alexander Hamilton Bridge has not undergone major repair since it opened on January 15, 1963. In 1955, Robert Moses determined that the 181st Street Bridge would not be able handle the anticipated traffic demands from the proposed lower level of the George Washington Bridge. 1. Stage 1 : The median area will be reconstructed as a temporary travel lane Stage 2: The westbound right-hand lanes will be worked on and the bridge will be widened Stage 3: The eastbound right-hand lanes will be worked on and the bridge will be widened Stage 4: Eastbound traffic will be split, with the construction work area in between Stage 5: Westbound traffic will be split, with the construction work area in between Stage 6: Traffic will return to its original formation, and the median barrier will be reconstructed
  2. The arch rib will require stiffening only to the outer ribs, and primarily to reinforce these members for section loss due to corrosion. The only spandrel columns that require reinforcement are the longest columns at Panel Points 8 and 8’. This is because the original design used the same section for all columns, and buckling controlled the design. Load capacity increase is assisted by making the slab composite And finally it is proposed to eliminate the expansion joints in the deck at the 1/3 points. The analysis of the overall combined structure indicated that no overstresses resulted provided that the joints were locked at the full dead load condition.
  3. Referred to as “spaghetti ramps”
  4. Field Automated Communications Systems - FACS
  5. Acceleration analysis – our independent analysis verified Contractor’s analysis and also showed additional areas that could be accelerated to meet goals Submittal review analysis – if review process can be shortened what is result Fabrication review analysis – if fabrication duration can be shortened what is result Extensive analysis of mitigation options and ideas Will modifying stages actually save time? While we are working on mitigation ideas, what work should we be progressing Will moving west approach slab work earlier actually help? If we keep Temporary Bridge 7A in service longer, will it hurt us later?
