Ahead of the marcus evans Private Wealth Management Summit Fall 2018, Jeff Nabers talks about cryptocurrencies and how investors can benefit from the asset class
What Investors Need to Know about the Future of Cryptocurrencies-Jeff Nabers, Managing Partner, Coin Capital
1. What Investors Need to Know
about the Future of Cryptocurrencies
Interview with: Jeff Nabers, Manag-
ing Partner, Coin Capital
“Investors need to know that it could be
very dangerous to have zero exposure
to cryptocurrencies, as they will be
taking a bite out of many traditional
business models,” says Jeff Nabers,
Managing Partner, Coin Capital. “The
most exciting and successful cryptocur-
rency projects have not gone online
yet,” he adds.

Summit Fall 2018, taking place in
Palm Beach, Florida, December 3-5.
How is the financial system transi-
tioning today?
Cryptocurrencies are an emerging asset
class that will play a pivotal role in our
evolving financial system. Investors
must understand that the architecture
itself is changing, from centralized to
decentralized, where things operate
very differently. The big opportunity for
investors today is to own a piece of the
new infrastructure, known as protocols.
For example, consumer-facing applica-
tions are currently being built on both
Bitcoin and Ethereum. Investing in
crypto protocols is akin to claiming
newly discovered land on which great
future projects will be developed.
How does this impact investors?
What new opportunities do you
predict?
We will see an increase in security,
privacy and new abilities with cryptocur-
rencies that we have not seen before, in
addition to increased regulatory accep-
tance. Ethereum has received a lot of
attention for its smart contracts plat-
form. While many exciting projects built
on Ethereum are still in their early
stages, the ramifications of smart
contracts are such that many functions
of intermediary businesses will be
performed more securely and privately
for almost zero cost and without
intermediaries. That will disrupt some of
the largest prevailing business models.
Investors need to know that it could be
very dangerous to have zero exposure
to cryptocurrencies, as they will be
taking a bite out of many traditional
business models.
What concerns do long-term inves-
tors have about cryptocurrencies?
Should they be concerned?
Most are and should be concerned about
extreme volatility. Two solutions are:
having a longer-term outlook and being
diversified. It is impossible to know the
absolute best-performing strategy or
best fund manager in advance, so the
best way to manage risk is to diversify
among multiple funds and work with
experienced cryptocurrency investors.
What mistakes do investors make?
We always try to understand new
technologies based on our experience
with past technologies. Right now
everyone is treating cryptocurrencies
like stocks, which is a mistake. With
stocks, investors often look for a good
CEO and use established valuation
models. With cryptocurrencies no one
person controls any cryptocurrency
network and there are no established
valuation models yet.
A good cryptocurrency will have certain
attributes, such as a strong community
of developers, who do not directly
control it, but contribute to its develop-
ment and future. There are a few crypto
valuation theories, but no one truly
knows what the networks should be
worth right now, and that adds to their
price volatility. Further research reveals
cryptocurrencies are presently only
about five percent developed. At Coin
Capital, we see the potential for the
value of the cryptocurrency market to
be several orders of magnitude higher
after new functions are released by
developers.
What percentage allocation do you
suggest?
A year ago, sophisticated investors were
talking about one percent of their
portfolio. Now they are saying five to
ten percent. It is definitely true that it
should be a small portion of their
portfolio.
What are your thoughts on the
future of cryptocurrencies?
The most exciting and successful
cryptocurrency projects have not gone
online yet. Billions of dollars were raised
over the past year or so, and we will see
the fruit of those investments over next
year or two. When it comes to technol-
ogy, most people cannot see very far
ahead. I believe that over the next few
years, people will start seeing what
cryptocurrencies are truly capable of.
We might not even call them cryptocur-
rencies anymore, as that term can be
very limiting. The potential of these
assets goes beyond anything we have
seen before. They can act like a cur-
rency, function as a stock or bond, and
down the road with smart contract
functionality, they might even operate
as an insurance contract or company.
Over the next five to ten years this will
be an asset class with a market cap of
tens of trillions of dollars.
Any final words of advice?
We have had decades of decentraliza-
tion where entire business models have
gone away. Disruption is now coming to
more industries and cryptocurrency is
just the next phase. It will be the
recognized form of global exchange. The
average investor’s portfolio is full of
stocks of centralized business models
that may disappear. It makes sense for
investors to position their portfolio in a
way to benefit from these changes.
Cryptocurrencies are one of the only
truly uncorrelated asset classes, so
adding them to a portfolio can also
reduce the risk of the overall portfolio.
Disruption is
now coming to
more industries
