A presentation of the Nevada Digital Newspaper Project on the annual meeting with our partners in Carson City, NV (2017). The first part of the presentation is authored by me and it covers the overall project management providing details about statistics, workflow, vendors, technologies, innovations and project challenges.
4. Project workflow: overview
• Title selection
• Advisory board prioritized and selected titles for digitization
• Duplication
• NSLA and UC Berkeley duplicate reels based on approved Title List
• Collation
• Titles are collated based on Title List priority
• Titles are divided into 10 batches each one consisting of 10,000 pages
• Digitization
• Apex digitizes the images and encodes the metadata from the collation
• Quality review
• NVDNP team reviews data to ensure high quality product
• Submitting data to LC
• Data is submitted in 10 batches
• Depositing reels in LC
• Final step after all batches are accepted
5. • Collation
• New collation spreadsheets – same metadata
• Advantages: simplified workflow
• Fewer fields to fill
• Fewer spreadsheets to manage
• Simplified submission process: Basecamp vs. iArchives portal
• Digitization
• New vendor – new scanning process
• Reels shipped in 4 big batches instead of 10 small ones
• Advantages: saves time!
• Scanning ahead of collation
• Encoding data after receiving metadata spreadsheets
• Flexibility what’s included in each batch
Project workflow: what’s new
6. • Quality review
• Simplified QR process
• Simulates the user environment
• Allows us to interact with the data the same way as users do
• Allows more efficient data review
• Saves time
• Easier to catch errors
• Installing local instance of Chronicling America which replicates the
official project website
• Each batch is uploaded and reviewed separately
• All clumsy steps involved in using the iArchives portal are omitted
• QR feedback is simplified, too
