A multipurpose facility is a demanding place. It serves the school and the community.
It has to accommodate a wide variety of activities from dining to plays, physical education to
assemblies, concerts to classes. Every activity has its own unique requirements for acoustics,
lighting, seating, and audio/visual technology that must be easily modified from one event
to the next. Having an audio system that is easy to control, sounds great, and is flexible enough
to meet the demands of different activities is crucial to the success and use of the system.
For sixty years, Harman has been engineering and manufacturing integrated audio technology
that is used in multipurpose spaces. We are one company that offers comprehensive audio
system solutions that are scalable, energy efficient, and reliable.
Our mission is to provide audio systems to education facilities that enhance audience
experiences, and create positive outcomes. We work with schools nationwide to help them
design sound systems that are easy to use and affordable.
At Harman, Sound Matters. Take a look at how our award winning, world renowned brands will
make your facility sound the very best.
Audio system Solutions for
MultiPurpose
Spaces
A Multipurpose Space
is called a lot of names
…no matter what you call it, it’s a
space that constantly changes.
IN SCHOOLS
4. Goodhart Hall - Bryn Mawr College|Bryn Mawr, PA University of Rhode Island - Swan Hall|Kingston, RI
Before a sound system can be
designed, the installed space
must be evaluated:
• What are the room dimensions?
• What are the construction
materials in the space?
• What are the acoustics like
in the space?
• Are there noise restrictions?
• What kinds of activities will
take place in the space?
• Where will the audience sit?
A Harman Professional
representative can properly
evaluate your space and create
a 3D computer model to evaluate
the sound system performance
before it is installed.
1. Understand the Space
A well designed sound system will
deliver good sound to all listeners
at an appropriate volume. Using
speakers with a narrow coverage
pattern, or placing speakers too
far apart can create dead spots
or unevenness in the space. An
experienced audio system engineer
will understand the coverage pattern
of a specified speaker. A predictive
computer analysis, like the one shown
above, is a good way to visualize how
the speakers will provide coverage
and volume in the facility. A Harman
Professional representative can assist
with the design of a sound system
that will provide proper coverage of
your space.
Over 500 different JBL®
speakers
are designed for music and speech.
Which model of speakers to use
depends on your needs and the
acoustics of the room. The type of
activities that will go on in the space
will determine the model of speakers
used and the quantity needed
to provide the desired coverage.
The mounting and architectural
requirements of the space will decide
the type of speakers used such as
ceiling, pendant, or wall. If there is a
need for high impact music, several
subwoofers may be desired for extra
low end. A Harman Professional
representative is a JBL®
speaker
expert and will be able to advise you
on the best speaker solutions for
your space.
2. Select the
Right Loudspeakers
3. Provide Good Coverage
Before the sound system is designed for a multipurpose space many questions need to be answered.
It is important to describe in detail how the system will be used, the space it will be in, and what budget
you have to work with. The following six concepts serve as a solid foundation for understanding the
sound system design process.

Successful Sound Systems
5. Radio City Music Hall|New York City, NYValley Performing Arts Center - CSUN|Northridge, CA
All Saint’s Senior College Auditorium|Sydney, Australia
Cantebury Events Center - Cantebury College|Waterford, QLD
Speakers need amplification
to operate. Some important
questions to answer when
specifying an amplifier are:
• What are the power
requirements of the
specified speaker?
• What is the total impedance
of each speaker channel?
• What kind of imaging, such
as stereo or surround, does
the system require?
Crown®
Audio manufactures a
wide variety of installed series
amplifiers that can satisfy any
power or channel requirements.
A Harman Professional
representative can assist you in
selecting the best amplifiers for
the system.
4. Have Enough Power 5. Fine Tune the Sound
A multipurpose room needs a system
that can change based upon the event
taking place. Systems equipped
with BSS®
or dbx®
controllers can
be programmed with presets to
automatically change audio settings
based on performance type, audience
location, or zone. With the turn of a
dial, a room’s audio profile can switch
from speech mode to performance
mode, from small audience setups, to
large ones. These controls can change
volume and select audio devices such
as music players or microphones.
Our controllers are simple enough for
anyone to master and sophisticated
enough to make the setup of the
room efficient. Harman Professional
representatives can help specify
controls to fit any project.
Each room has acoustic challenges
that affect the quality of the sound.
Some rooms are overly reverberant
while others may be dry. This can
affect the intelligibility of speech and/
or create unwanted brightness or
boominess in music. Having digital
signal processors to fine tune the
audio will assist in improving the
quality of the sound. EQ, Delay,
Compression, and Anti-Feedback
are types of processing that make
up part of the signal processing
toolbox. BSS®
and dbx®
have digital
signal processors that provide robust
capabilities for altering and managing
audio signals. Harman Professional
certified programmers can specify
the right device and program it
properly for your project.
