President
Southeast Asia and Korea
VMware
Poised to become the epicenter of digital innovation, our
region is outpacing the rest of the world with double-digit
growth in Internet, digital, social media and mobile activity.
In Southeast Asia and Korea – where mobile subscriptions
outstrip population numbers – over half of the 600 million
plus people are now connected to the Internet.
By 2025, today’s ever-changing technologies – including
the mobile Internet, the Internet of Things (IoT), cloud
technology – are expected to lead to 30% GDP growth in
Southeast Asia alone.
While this opens up a wealth of opportunities for businesses,
it is essential for companies to leverage technology and
innovate faster, in order to keep up with the rapid adoption
of all things digital.
Enterprises that have transformed into digital leaders in
Southeast Asia are reporting stronger profit growth, higher
employee engagement and cultures that are more inclusive.
It’s no surprise that the overwhelming majority of business
leaders in the region believe that they need to transform to a
digital business to enable future growth. Yet fewer than one
in three know how to get there.
VMware is committed to leading your digital transformation
journey and the stories in this book bear testament to that.
We’ve made entertainment more accessible for millions and
stock exchanges more efficient than ever by modernizing the
data center. We’ve enabled telcos to please their subscribers
and hospitals to delight their patients by integrating public
clouds. Our mobility solutions have made air travel safer
and digital banking a reality in emerging markets while our
comprehensive security solutions are giving leading financial
institutions additional peace of mind.
The secret sauce is simple. We empower our customers
to compete and succeed with a common operating
environment that lets them use any cloud they choose,
complete with end-to-end security solutions, and simple,
secure digital workspaces.
We hope the stories inspire you to begin your journey of
digital transformation and let us help you build exactly what
you need, the way you need it for today and tomorrow.
8. Across the world, the use of connected devices
is driving a boom in the amount of data created
that needs to be stored. In Southeast Asia alone,
data center traffic is expected to spike by 20 times
between last year and 20201
, thanks to devices
enabled for the Internet of Things.
In today’s data-driven economy, data centers have
to be more agile than ever. Hosting core IT assets,
critical business applications and valuable data, data
centers are having to handle increasing and complex
workloads with inflexible legacy systems.
While large enterprises in the region currently
operate data centers for their daily business
operations, half of them will be operating their
businesses through cloud data centers in under three
years2
.
However, public cloud adoption can create
operational cloud silos and compliance risk while
offering IT services seamlessly and securely across
private and public clouds.
To drive business innovation and growth, IT teams
need to connect apps across clouds and devices
with security, compliance, and availability and a
consistent architecture -- all under a constrained
budget. That means building a data center that
is virtualized, software defined, and automated,
with a consistent operational model to provide
infrastructure, applications, data, and IT services
rapidly and on demand.
THE FOUNDATION FOR A
FLEXIBLE, DATA CENTER
VMware enables organizations to seize the
momentum and modernize their data centers
to meet escalating business demands. Acting as
a partner, advisor, and guide, VMware helps IT
steadily evolve toward a modernized Software-
Defined Data Center (SDDC) for the digital era
by focusing on the following imperatives.
First, a modern data center starts with a modern
infrastructure. VMware’s approach to a modern
infrastructure is based on a software-defined
hyper-converged architecture across compute,
storage, network, and security.
This architecture enables an enterprise-ready,
high-performance infrastructure. It’s more
flexible, because it’s hardware-independent;
more agile because it’s highly programmable;
and more cost effective because it’s scalable and
based on commodity hardware.
Second, to improve productivity, IT teams need
to automate the way they roll out and manage
infrastructure and applications. They need to
streamline operations by eliminating manual
tasks involved with security policies, networking,
and infrastructure that’s required for applications.
And they need to do it without compromising
security and compliance requirements.

9. VMware solutions provide sophisticated
automation that lets businesses break down
the bottlenecks that are stalling the delivery
of IT services and enables the delivery of
personalized infrastructure and applications.
These solutions all work together to
let IT embed automation and policies
within blueprints, allowing IT to stand up
production-ready infrastructure in minutes
rather than weeks.
Third, to speed time-to-market, businesses
are seeking to roll out applications faster
and more frequently while maintaining
security and control. But the gamut of
technologies, architectures and platforms of
modern apps pose distinct challenges.
VMware solutions enable IT to run modern
apps that today’s digital businesses need
to power innovation and agility – backed by
the security, reliability, and governance the
enterprise demands. They help developers
boost productivity by delivering open APIs,
infrastructure, and application environments
sooner, with greater agility.
As businesses accelerate innovation and
agility, modernizing their data centers
become a linchpin in their strategy.
Utilizing a software-defined HCI architecture
of natively integrated compute, storage,
and network virtualization technologies
with automation and management, VMware
solutions support any workload from
traditional enterprise applications to modern
cloud-native applications. This innovative,
software-defined approach delivers cloud
service provider agility and economics in the
data center, and extends to an elastic hybrid
cloud environment for the digital future.

The rapid growth and transformation of ABS-
CBN’s businesses, driven by consumer demand
for always-on news, entertainment and services
over the past decade has put a strain on its IT
resources. Adding more servers to support the
business, ABS-CBN started racking up power
costs and was running out of data center space.
The current delivery platform was not able to
cope with increased subscriber demand for new
services and content, thus affecting the user
experience. ABS-CBN had to quickly find a way
to make the most of its existing servers and
reduce operating costs to cater to the business
requirements.

with trading volume growing rapidly, the DSE faced
serious scalability issues. Its data centers were energy
consuming, slow to deploy and demanded significant
physical space. There were also security concerns as
the number of mission-critical applications swelled.
The IT infrastructure constrained business growth
at a time the DSE aimed to achieve average daily
turnover of BDT25 billion (US$315.4 million) by 2020.
To achieve that, the IT infrastructure needed urgent
modernization to increase reliability, scalability and

26. With more than 8 billion devices expected to be
connected in Asia Pacific in under three years,
mobility as a phenomenon is exploding and
pushing businesses to deliver a secure and personal
experience to their employees, partners and
consumers1
.
Couple that with the worldwide trend of nine in
ten companies planning to increase the number of
internationally mobile staff by next year, and more
than seven in 10 millennials wanting to work abroad,
organizations will have to proactively design and
manage a connected future workplace to safeguard
their bottom line2
.
New technologies such as cloud and mobility are
rapidly changing the way people work and live,
and they’re having a profound impact on business
strategy. In private lives, individuals are constantly
exposed to new consumer applications and services
delivered through the web and via mobile apps,
which bring data together from many sources to
streamline a specific activity, like making a purchase
or receiving a recommendation.
Consumers love them because they’re designed
to be simple to learn and easy to use. More than
ever, this consumerization is changing employee
expectations, creating demand for new applications,
and driving new opportunities to change business
processes.
To harness the changes from consumerization,
enterprises can implement a digital workspace
solution, a holistic change in the way end-user
services are delivered by IT, enabling organizations
to deliver the apps and data employees need to
work across any device.
A successful digital workspace strategy includes
supporting any device type and OS, with the
flexibility to handle any ownership model. It ensures
authorized access to corporate owned, locked-
down and shared devices, as well as employees’
personal devices with robust privacy protection. It
also protects corporate data at rest and in transit
including email, files, and application state that may
be cached or stored on devices.
It should also deliver native applications to devices
and act as an access manager for cloud-based and
on-premises applications. Employee onboarding
and daily use should be simple enough to eliminate
instruction and help-desk assistance.
BRINGING THE DIGITAL
WORKSPACE TO LIFE
Security remains the No. 1 barrier to adopting
mobility solutions for organizations in the region3
.
VMware recognizes this and delivers a consumer
simple experience together with enterprise-class
security.
VMware provides a software-defined architecture
that gives organizations a simple way to manage
identity and access to all application types –
including iOS, Android and Windows – on premises
or in the cloud.
It also helps IT organizations improve previously
costly, time-consuming, and resource–intensive
experiences and tasks. For example, IT teams can
now onboard a new employee and all of his or her
apps and devices in under an hour – with zero tickets

27. and help desk calls. IT can also use the solution to
set and enforce access and data policies across all
apps, devices, and locations in one place, and use the
cloud to provision a new laptop, out of the box, in
minutes.
There are three prongs to VMware’s approach. First,
VMware’s digital workspace solution simplifies
access and app management, so employees can get
work done in real time from any device or location,
without compromising security.
Second, it unifies endpoint management by
managing all apps and devices from a single platform
for a variety of ownership models – from corporate-
owned or shared to bring your own device (BYOD)
and corporate-owned, personally-enabled (COPE).
Third, VMware’s solution virtualizes desktops
and apps so that they run in secure data centers
on-premises, or in the cloud, ensuring only the
user interface is transmitted beyond the firewall.
Applications and all of their data remain secure in
the data center, never touching the devices that
access them.
VMware’s digital workspace platform also enables
IT teams to provide management and control of
Windows 10 PCs, regardless of location or ownership
model. IT organizations can provision systems out of
the box, without needing to touch new laptops, and
support full application lifecycle management. The
digital workspace is a single, self-service platform for
authorized users to access modern Windows apps,
legacy Windows apps, web-based apps, and SaaS
apps.
With enterprise consumerization changing the way
users think about the role of technology in business,
VMware empowers the digital workspace by
delivering an experience that is consumer simple, yet
enterprise secure.

42. Leading the world in cloud readiness, Asia is poised
to steer the rest of the world into the digital age1
.
Asia Pacific, in particular, is expected to outperform
with the boom in cloud computing technologies.
Across the region, IT teams are embracing public
cloud solutions as they try to balance speed and
costs. In today’s accelerated marketplace where
speeding time-to-market is critical, IT leaders see
public clouds as the fastest option for meeting
their IT platform requirements. And by replacing
on-premises infrastructure with cloud-based
infrastructure, they gain capacity while reducing
data center footprint and costs.
It is little wonder that the public cloud services
market in the mature APAC region, which includes
Singapore and South Korea, is rising rapidly,
propelled by the fast-growing Software-as-a-Service
(SaaS) segment. By 2019, Gartner predicts that total
public cloud services spending in the mature APAC
region will rise to US$12.4 billion2
.
While enterprises recognize the value of public
cloud flexibility and agility, they face challenges
in integrating public cloud solutions into their
operations. When organizations invest in multiple
clouds, inefficiencies arise from having to manage
multiple cloud silos. They also need to consider how
they can migrate applications running on premises,
typically mission-critical and data-sensitive apps, to
the public cloud while ensuring security.
MODERN, STRATEGIC
CLOUD FOUNDATIONS
Many organizations are already developing new
applications on cloud services, employing cloud-
native technologies that are available on different
platforms. But they may have difficulty integrating
these applications with the rest of their IT
operations. VMware helps organizations integrate
public clouds in every manner, at every stage of the
cloud journey.
At the same time, VMware’s range of private,
public and VMware hybrid cloud solutions give IT
organizations broad choice and flexibility in how to
build, run, and manage any cloud. From a best-in-
class Software-Defined Data Center (SDDC)-based
private cloud to a VMware hybrid cloud, enterprises
have the freedom to implement a cloud solution
that supports their cloud strategy for their unique
business, with freedom and control, without added
cost and complexity.
In Asia Pacific, IT leaders are taking firm steps
towards their organization’s digital transformation,
with almost half indicating they are prioritizing
hybrid cloud over public-only or private-only cloud
solutions for their organizations in the near future3
.
With its industry-leading cloud technologies,
VMware is helping these IT leaders to fully leverage
hybrid clouds, and connect and manage multiple
clouds for increased agility, capacity, and resilience.
A VMware hybrid cloud promises an easier on-ramp
from internal data centers into public clouds. By
extending the data center to the public cloud they
choose, organizations can quickly scale, consolidate,
and migrate infrastructure, while taking advantage of
existing tools, processes, and skill sets.
They can extend their on-premises infrastructure to
boost regional capacity or support disaster recovery.
They can support data center consolidation and
application migration, or improve dynamic capacity
capabilities for new application development.

43. VMware supports business agility, resilience, scale
and choice by extending data centers to the public
cloud with VMware vCloud® Air™ and vCloud Air
Network partners’ public clouds including IBM Cloud
and Amazon Web Services (AWS). This means
that IT teams can run any application anywhere,
with complete workload portability—between
on-premises and the cloud, while maintaining
operational consistency.
IT leaders also want to manage multiple clouds
holistically, with the insight they need for lifecycle
and cost management – without compromising
security and compliance. VMware comes alongside
to help them securely connect and manage multiple
clouds with on-premises solutions or SaaS-based
services.
IT organizations can take advantage of VMware’s
enterprise-ready cloud management platform to
manage multiple private and public clouds. They
can build and run applications on, and migrate them
across, multiple clouds, securely connecting all
clouds and managing all workloads across networks.
Advanced operations management capabilities also
provide a unified view of the health, performance,
and capacity management of workloads across
clouds plus policy-based governance.
As the recognized market leader in virtualization,
VMware enables IT organizations to confidently build
a best-in-class private cloud that easily extends to
compatible public clouds so any application can
ultimately be run, managed, connected to, and
secured on any cloud – combining freedom and
control.

highly competitive telecommunications market by
constantly developing and introducing innovative
new services for consumers. This was powered by the
firm’s cloud transformation journey, which provided
greater flexibility, scalability and speed to meet
market demand.
However, as the demand for digital services and
strong Internet continues to grow and reach
unprecedented levels in the Philippines, Globe will
need to re-energize its cloud strategy and further
transform IT infrastructure to become even more agile

National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) is a confederation
of trade unions and a network of professional associations
and partners across all sectors in Singapore. The union is
responsible for supporting working people from all walks of
life by helping them to meet the challenges that the business
environment may pose, and increasingly relies on IT to do so.
To support the needs of a technologically advanced economy,
NTUC must continuously upgrade its IT infrastructure to
ensure that it remains ready to meet future data demands.
NTUC needed to transform its IT system so that it would
minimize downtime, maximize scalability and increase
productivity – all without compromising security and
business continuity.

50. Home to the world’s fourth-largest Internet
population, the growth of the Internet in Southeast
Asia continues to outpace other countries. This
year, internet growth in Indonesia, Malaysia, the
Philippines, and Vietnam will range from 6.4 to
9.5 percent, higher than the global average of 5.8
percent1
. The region is also number three in the
world for mobile subscriptions2
.
This translates into an influx of new users who
are rapidly getting online through smartphones,
which are less likely than computers to have
anti-virus protection, resulting in a multitude of
unsophisticated users who can be easily targeted
through phishing and online scams.
At the same time, the region’s underdeveloped
system of data protection laws and weak adoption
of cybersecurity best practices make it a target of
cyber attacks, which can affect the safety of the
Internet on a global scale. Analysts have warned
multinationals that hackers can potentially get into
data from the company’s headquarters by infiltrating
their local offices in Southeast Asia3
.
Even countries like Singapore and South Korea that
have invested in cybersecurity are more vulnerable
to cyber attacks than other countries, primarily due
to their reliance on technology and high degree of
modernization4
. Across Southeast Asia, analysts
estimate that delaying cyber security measures
could cost businesses to lose US$3 trillion by 20205
.
VISIBILITY AND CONTEXT
TO STAY AHEAD
For IT, traditional network perimeter security
models are no longer sufficient to protect a fast-
growing sprawl of applications and users, and meet
escalating compliance requirements. Environments
and users aren’t neatly contained behind perimeter
firewalls, but require more flexible, agile protection,
while attackers are becoming more sophisticated.
VMware can help organizations achieve the
insight they need to stay ahead of their changing
security needs. At the heart of VMware solutions
is a ubiquitous software layer across application
infrastructure and endpoints that’s independent of
the underlying physical infrastructure or location.
This approach provides IT with deep visibility into
every interaction between users and applications,
while offering context to understand what those
interactions mean. Together, this visibility and deeper
context enable organizations to better align their
security controls and policies to the applications
they are protecting.
First, it is crucial that organizations secure their
application infrastructure. The VMware solution
starts with virtualization and the ability to abstract
the underlying infrastructure from the applications
running on top of it – whether that infrastructure is
on-premises or in the public cloud.

51. This layer of abstraction provides full visibility
into the data path and an enforcement point to
compartmentalize applications through micro-
segmentation of the network, which helps IT prevent
security threats from breaching defenses. The layer
also provides an ideal point to encrypt stored data,
so application infrastructure data is safe, even if it
falls into the wrong hands.
Second, VMware helps IT to secure identity and
endpoints by applying a ubiquitous software layer
across all users and endpoints to verify user identity
and device posture. This approach provides end-to-
end visibility and control of the user and endpoint,
helping secure corporate data and reduce the
cyber-attack surface, without impacting the user
experience.
Organizations can employ a single VMware solution
to protect all their endpoints, including smartphones,
tablets, laptops, wearables and IoT devices, so that IT
can seamlessly deploy any app through a single app
catalog with built-in single sign-on, data security, and
endpoint compliance.
Third, VMware’s unique software layer across
application infrastructure and endpoints provides
an ideal location to implement compliance controls,
and gain the visibility necessary to demonstrate
compliance. Whether they are employing a private
or public cloud environment, organizations can rest
assured that they remain continuously compliant.
In today’s changing landscape and needs, VMware
helps IT organizations transform security by
maximizing visibility and context of the interaction
between users and applications, aligning security
controls and policies to the applications they are
protecting, and enabling the insertion of third-party
security services for additional intelligent protection.

But with its business growing rapidly, Adira Finance’s
IT infrastructure came under ever-increasing strain,
requiring more data centers to be added regularly to
cater for massive amounts of data and resources.
This created a sprawling network of physical data
centers that were costly, slow to deploy and space-
consuming. At the same time, credit approval
processes were long and complicated, reducing
efficiency significantly. Adira Finance needed to
review its IT infrastructure to find a solution to
the existing data management problems while
maximizing productivity in a cost-efficient

As its business expanded, AmBank handled rapidly-rising
volumes of data. The company needed a more cost-

digital banking services to remain competitive.
AmBank’s legacy IT infrastructure operated on the
traditional “rack and stack” model, where physical servers
increased to keep pace with the rising business demands.
That system was costly, inefficient and required deployment
times of up to 12 weeks per new server installation.
AmBank’s physical and power limits were eventually
reached, leaving the system vulnerable to power
outages, further stretching IT resources.
