This presentation introduces The Food Project: an after-school Green STEM Learning enrichment program facilitated by Mary Van Dyke. I am offering this program for fall 2016 to spring 2017 at Swanson Middle School, Arlington. Please contact me if you're interested in the program for grades elementary school grades 3 - 5, or for middle school grades 6-8. In this year-long program, students connect farming, fun and food. Prepare ground in the fall, test soil, begin to compost, and then plan, plant and care for an outdoor “mini-farm” at your school site. Students can take produce home, or donate to the local Food Assistance Center, or have the opportunity to harvest and sell veg produce by arranging a CSA (Community-Supported Agriculture) at school. Opportunities also include to exhibit their project in the spring at the regional NOVA Outside School Environmental Action Showcase in spring, and also at the VA Urban Ag Summit to be held in Arlington in October 2017.

Inspired by nature and the wonder of the changing seasons? Here's an outline of a Nature Rangers after school enrichment program, K-5 grade. Place-based seasonal program, 6-9 weeks, 1 - 1.5 hour long sessions. Celebrate harvest-time and springtime, study backyard animals. Learn stewardship with integrated science, art and play activities. Take time to reflect, read stories and do projects. Each session cultivates appreciation of the world around us.

This presents a year-long project about the Chesapeake Bay watershed by group of teenage students. The students studied issues relating to the Bay. During their inquiry process, the students discovered native and invasive plants in the church garden where they meet. Considering solutions and audiences, the students wrote and performed a puppet show film for the church congregation. The presentation reflects on the year-long Earth Force civic engagement process and the student's accomplishments and stewardship project.

This is a series of Vegetable Garden signs with the theme of Grow and Eat a Rainbow designed by Mary Van Dyke. The rainbow of colors refer to the plant families - and help plant your garden and rotate crops successfully. The signs include a key color guide to the plant families, and details of crop rotation and use of cover crops. Signs describe a few crops, and techniques for growing tomatoes and beans at home, school or a community garden. Print these signs on 11 x 8.5 inch Terraslate 7mm polyester water-resistant 'paper' with UV coating, trim to size and place in metal sign holders 11 x 7 inch - or hole-punch and hang on a fence. Here are signs for 10 plants native to the area of Northern Virginia Metro DC area. Download and print the signs on polyester card (e.g Terraslate 7 or 10 mm) and put in metal holders (e.g. from Forest Supplies). And print to use as a booklet in and outside the classroom. These plants grow well in dry part shade, and look well planted together in a garden bed. Plants selected for spring, summer and fall pollinators. Remember to water your plants regularly while they are establishing (1 - 3 years).
