18. Interaction online
• Plan the interaction before the online meeting.
– Hybrid teaching: Give special attention to online students!
– Use the tools that everyone can use.
• Use the cameras & look at the camera.
• Set/create the rules.
• Offer versatile ways for interaction.

What you need to feel
safe in an online group?
20. What is typical for
good teaching methods?
Minna Lakkala: www.slideshare.net/MinnaHL/pedagogineninfra2015
• Students co-operate like professional teams.
• Students perform tasks and solve challanging problems.
• Students use various sources and digital techonology.
• Students create new knowledge together and make concrete results.

21. Steps of co-operation
in online learning environments
Minna Lakkala, University of Helsinki (2008)
Shared and longterm development of solutions
and outputs – Primary focus on practices of building
knowledge
Discussion and interaction between the
participans – Primary focus on communication skills
Communication and sharing ideas and learning
outcomes – Primary focus on the content and
performing knowledge
Communication is between the teacher/trainer
and participants – Primary focus on content
No co-operation – environment is about sharing
materials – Primary focus on content
22. Planning of an online course
means planning of the learning process
Kuva: joepmeindertsma CC0, pixabay.com
Ask yourself what you want
your students to do.
23. Pedagogical manuscript
• A plan on how to phase the learning process and tasks into smaller
parts along the learning path.
• The manuscript may be e.g. visual model, table, or timeline.
• Explains what is happening in the course.
• Helps you see the structure and whole course.

26. Learning in online courses is often
more demanding than attending
face-to-face courses.
The online course is often chosen
because it is hoped to be easier.
28. Avoiding drop-outs
Akseli Huhtanen: fitech.io/fi/fitech-selvitti-miten-vahentaa-keskeyttamista-verkkokursseilla
1. The courses must include opportunities for interaction
between students and between the student and the teacher.
2. There must be support available (content & technical).
Make sure the students have the contact information.
3. In the middle of the course, the teacher sends a message
explaining what to do if you have fallen behind in the
course.
4. Before the start of the course, the students' level of study-
and IT-skills will be tested and support will be offered
to those with poor capabilities.
29. Apps for activating students
• LMS, Google/Microsoft
• Word Clouds
• Notice boards, whiteboards
• Mind maps
• Quizzes and polls
• Content creation
– Adobe Creative Cloud Express;
videos, posters, infographics,.. You need tools to learn,
to remember and to
work online with others.

43. Successful video in education
Satu Hakanurmi: blogit.utu.fi/erappu/pedagogisesti-mielekas-video
"For the student, the content is most important. The next thing
they appreciate most is the teacher's personal contribution."
Add value to the learning process
- Inspires, activates, deepens, concretizes, supports remembering etc.
- Video is PART of the learning assignment.
In technical implementation,
students appreciate two things:
- Quality of sound.
- The picture doesn't shake.
44. Ease the viewer's cognitive load
Satu Hakanurmi: blogit.utu.fi/erappu/pedagogisesti-mielekas-video
• Prefer short videos. Add questions in videos.
• Use both verbal and visual expression.
• Highlight! – Highlight relevant ideas and concepts with symbols or
texts. Highlighting key information helps the viewer to focus
attention, remember and apply information elsewhere.
• Pruning – Focus on goals and consider whether
background music or effects are needed.
• What is the main message in your video?

based on 6,9 million MOOC video views

affects_student_engagement_An_empirical_study_of_MOOC_videos.
• Shorter videos are more engaging (max 6 min).
• A teacher’s talking head with slides is more engaging than slides alone.
• Personal feel could be more engaging than studio recordings.
• Khan-style tablet drawing tutorials are more engaging than slides.
→ Introduce motion and continuous visual flow.
• High quality pre-recorded classroom lectures are not so engaging in MOOCs.
• Teacher speaking fairly fast and with high enthusiasm is more engaging.
• Students engage differently with lecture and tutorial videos.
– For lectures, focus more on the first-watch experience;
and for tutorials, add support for rewatching.
