Week #9 Summary
The 9th week of the college football season featured outcomes of games
that are making the playoff picture much clearer.
Alabama was held to under 40 points in the 1st half this week! Oops, they
have a bye week!!
Georgia had a big bounce week from their disappointing performance vs.
LSU last week.
Clemson seems to be getting stronger each week as freshman quarterback
Trevor Lawrence gets more comfortable in the offense.
Oklahoma’s offense is fun to watch!
QB Kyler Murray leads Oklahoma to rout of Kansas State

Week #8 Takeaways
Offenses at Miami, Florida St. and Florida. Florida is known as a hotbed of
producing skilled players in its deep high school football programs. So why
is it that these offenses are just not very good. How about this fact from this
past weekend’s games. Florida State generated an embarrassing 247 yards of
offense in its loss to Clemson. Florida did slightly better gaining 275 yards in
the loss to Georgia. And Miami put a whopping 305 yards on the board in
the defeat to Boston College on Friday night. These three schools combined
for 827 total yards. Oklahoma, on the other hand, put 702 yards on the field
against Kansas and they throttled down their offense in the 4th quarter
during their blowout of Kansas State.
Another tough week for Top #25 Teams. Eleven of the Top #25 tops went
down in defeat this weekend and Kentucky pulled one out the hat to beat
Missouri on the last play of the game. Granted three of the teams lost to other
Top #25 teams but this illustrates the balance throughout college football
where only Alabama for sure and, maybe Clemson, are great teams.

Week #9 Takeaways
Which league is worse – ACC or Pac-12? Both the Atlantic Coast
Conference and thePac-12 are, at best, very average this year. Three
ranked teams went down in the Pac-12 this week. Anybody want to buy a
ticket to the Pac-12 championship snoozer? Not me!! In the ACC, only
Clemson is really good and the good teams in the past like Florida State
and Louisville lost really ugly games this week. And the ACC Coastal
Division looks to be perhaps the weakest division of any at the FBS level.
Florida State’s offensive line. The FSU Seminoles offensive line may be one of
the worst in history for a major college program. It started on opening night
when the Virginia Tech front defensive seven looked like they have free entry to
the Florida State backfield. The offensive line play is so bad that it brings back
memories of my son Matthew playing quarterback for his middle school team.
For Matthew it was like playing touch football with “no mississippi’s” required
before the opposing side rushed the quarterback. The Florida State offense may
be worse! One can’t help but feel the pain for QB Francois and RB’s Patrick and
Akers.

Week #9 Biggest Surprise
Matthew Kupec - Florida State. I didn’t think things could get worse for FSU
but they did! What must Bobby Bowden be thinking these days? Everyone knew
FSU had a bad offensive line but you just don’t see any fixes. And the defense
which had been FSU’s strength just didn’t get it done against the FSU offense. It
just was so surprising to see that Florida State had no fight, no pride and no
ability to compete with Clemson on Saturday.
Matt Kupec – I am going to give a shout out to the Army Black Knights football
team. With their win over Eastern Michigan yesterday, Army has now qualified
for a bowl game for the 3rd consecutive year. Army sits at 6-2 with losses only to
Duke and to Oklahoma. But it was the OU game that really caught the nation’s
attention, particularly as we watch the OU offensive machine rack of huge chunks
of yards and TD’s each week. As a reminder, the Army-OU game went into
overtime with Oklahoma winning 28-21. Army controlled the ball for 44:41
minutes compared to OU’s 15:19 minutes. And Army outgained OU 379 yards to
355 yards. Imagine holding OU to only 355 for the entire game. OU rang up 702
yards yesterday against Kansas State. So, keep “rolling along” Army the nation
stands proud in recognizing your great play this year!

Week #8 Best Performance
Matthew Kupec – Oklahoma State’s big upset win over Texas. Most of us
thought Texas would be triumphant in this Stillwater clash. “Texas is back,” we
have been hearing and OSU has struggled over the past few games. But OSU
came out punching and totaled 275 yards of offense in the first quarter alone to
build a big lead and hold on to defeat the Longhorns. Texas did make a late run
but the Cowboys kept up the pressure and brought home a big victory for Coach
Mike Gundy.
Matt Kupec – I am going with Houston junior quarterback D’Eriq King. If you
didn’t watch Houston’s upset of previously undefeated South Florida, you
missed Sir King in a big-time performance! D’Eriq went 28-40-419 passing yards
and 5 TD’s and ran for another 132 yards and 2 TD’s. Oh my!!! King has really
responded to new offense coordinator Kendal Briles schemes and Houston is a
juggernaut on offense! Hail to the King!!

Week #9 Biggest Disappointment
Matthew Kupec – – TCU loss to Kansas. Yes, Kansas! Kansas’ last Big 12 win
was against Texas in 2016 and that loss pretty much sealed Coach Charlie
Strong’s fate as Texas’ head football coach. Certainly I’m not implying that Head
Coach Gary Patterson is in danger of losing his job because he is not. Coach
Patterson has done an amazing job building and keeping the TCU program
relevant on the national scene. But this is a disappointing loss for TCU!!
Matt Kupec – the total collapse of Florida State this year. The Seminoles are so
bad they are painful to watch! As a mentioned earlier they have the worst
offensive line in the country. They can’t run or pass. And after the game new
Head Coach Willie Taggart said some of his players have quit. Maybe Jimbo
Fisher knew something more than his pursuit of the $75 million guaranteed
contract to bolt for Texas A&M!!
