2. Opening paragraph
My plan for this project is to create a marketing package with videos
and imagery formulated for social media platforms. The promotion
package will be advertising a website to buy different clothing brands.
My contextual research will assist my project by observing the way
directors style their videos and seeing the common thread throughout
the videos that they make uniquely theirs. I will also be looking at
fashion designers in order to make promotional content for . I will look
at what their influences are and what their style is in the promotion of
their clothes, where they promote their clothes and how they can keep
a consistent style. I will also look at illustrators of books and see how
they influence fashion through their art and look at the aesthetic to see
if it can be replicated.
3. Strengths and limitations
Strengths Limitations
Editing skills - I know how to use different effects and how I
can use and mix them into my work. Effects that I can use
are keying, paper rip effect, cut out letters and mirroring.
Motivation - I struggle to motivate myself to do work. This
can be on a scene to shoot, as well as editing and planning.
The way I can combat this is by giving myself realistic targets
to meet by the end of the day.
After effects - I know how to create animatics, as well as,
making 3D logo animations. I could further progress this
strength by applying After Effects to more of my work.
Asking for help - I don't usually ask for help when I’m doing
my work. This is because I believe I can solve the issue
myself or don't want to speak (even if I really need help).
The way I can combat this would be by becoming
increasingly comfortable speaking in the class.
Inspiration- I primarily gain inspiration from my
surroundings and the media I consume. This can lead to me
making references or using styles which are similar to other
creators.
Distractions - the main distractions around me are
my phone and people. The way I could deal with this is by
putting my phone away during lessons and removing myself
from lesson and going to the library, where I won't be
distracted by others.
Planning - I struggle with planning because I find it hard to
put all my ideas onto paper, due to my dyslexia, even if I
know what I want to make.
4. Adrian Villagomez
Adrian Villagomez's work has very clear-cut
visuals with extremely striking imagery. He
has collaborated with significant musicians
and artists, such as Denzel Curry in his
music video "Walkin”. There can be
observed a clear Quentin Tarantino
influence on both the visual style, as well
as, having its own style of illustrating the
size of the surroundings in comparison to
Denzel Curry and showing, in a visual way,
how far Denzel's character is walking.
5. Adrian Villagomez
Other work Adrian has done is FW21 by
Aldo. This was a fashion advertisement
which was, visually, incredibly striking from
the unique shot angles, to the motion
tracking. It made a very mundane thing,
like putting on shoes, appealing and
showed how we are all connected
and similar through doing tasks like that.
This is displayed through a very creative,
and visually engaging, way. There is a
constant flow to the project with smooth
transitions between each shot and keeping
the shots fresh, by showing the different
scenarios that the shoes can be used in.
6. Nick Walker
The Converse X Midnight Studios video has a dark and mundane look
to it, which ties with chaos which seems to run through Nick Walker’s
video, of stealing the converse shoes and running from the security
guards. I like the simplicity of this of this video and how it isn't afraid to
be so. Another of his videos the Playboi Carti sky music video
completes the show of chaos in a video where Carti and his friends
destroy a supermarket. I like this video for the level of chaos it creates.
The Playboi Carti R.I.P. music video is based on the album cover and is
meant to show off 'rage culture' in a mosh pit. I like this video with the
visual effects of slowing the video down, then returning to normal
speed. I feel it is a simple, but visually useful effect. The Trippie Redd
‘Miss the Rage’ video is another show of chaos through Walker's work.
In this piece cars are burning and exploding. The use distortion in the
effects used in the video really appeal to me, and it almost shows
another form of reality.
7. Nick Walker
The Playboi Carti ‘Die Lit’ album cover is
inspired by the Charged G.B.H album cover
and it demonstrates in the videos that there
is a lot more of a punk style and aesthetic. I
like the ‘Die Lit’ album cover because of
how out there the album cover is, with
Playboi Carti jumping into a mosh pit, and
how it has become iconic as a hip hop
album; just from its look, as it isn't generic
at all. The @MEH cover, in contrast, is very
simple. You can only just make out the
silhouette of Carti. I don't like this cover as
much as the Die Lit cover because it is a lot
less visually engaging.
8. Max
Reynders (MXDVS)
Max Reynders is a fashion designer
and owner; he owns the brand
MXDVS. MXDVS is a fashion brand that
I have bought from and used I like the
brand for its unique aesthetic and look
since it combines different aesthetic
like war core gothic and horror.
MXDVS has wide range of product but
has the underlying gothic theme
throughout all their product. Maxs
takes inspiration from his surroundings
which influence what he makes even
out the most mundane things in day-
to-day life.
9. Max Reynders
(MXDVS)
Max's social
media demonstrate what his
interests and inspirations are which
can inspire pieces of fashion and art.
There is a usually a dystopian look to
the things that inspire him and being
able to look at something and find
inspiration from it is something I'd
like to incorporate into the way I
work.
10. A$AP Rocky (AWGE)
AWGE is a creative collective that was made by A$AP Rocky. It
is a record label, fashion brand and video production
company. The general aesthetic of AWGE is to see the world as
a kid again and have the ‘child like wonder of the world’ and
the nostalgia of the 90s and 2000s. I like the nostalgic look of
the aesthetic using lower quality footage, or lowering the
quality of footage, as well as designing a website so that it
looks/feels like you're operating an old PC.
“So, for me, fashion was about standing out as an individual -
and it helped me get the attention that most people try to get
with publicity stunts or by doing other crazy things. But I just
let the attention come to me naturally, and I think some of
that has to do with my fashion.”-A$AP Rocky
11. A$AP Rocky
Rocky designed a shoe with
PacSun. The shoe was a skate
shoe, so the advertisement was
built around the idea of being a
skater as well as being built
around the idea of fire. This was
shown through the reptation of
fire seen on the shoes, the truck
and visual effects along with the
final clip of the person skating
whilst being on fire.
12. Taiyō Matsumoto
Taiyō Matsumoto is a Japanese manga artist who made the manga comic
Tekkonkinkreet (which is one of my favourite films/ manga stories), I like
Tekkonkinkreet because of its artwork, story and the message as to how people can
be so easily corrupted by greed along with how being innocent should be protected
as much as possible. I find the artwork in the film unique for an anime since the
characters are drawn in this child like way of anime; with very harsh edges as well as
the fact that the characters change their clothes and styles frequently. I like the style
and the aesthetic of Tekkonkinkreet because it is very bright and dense giving it the
impression that it is in a big busy city, with the brightness coming from the
perspective of a child and how they see the fun and light even in bad situations.
Within this there is also the influence of Hindu mixed with the Japanese culture in
the film, in the form of decorative and religious symbols which seem to have taken
inspiration from the culture. The fashion for characters display and obvious Asian
influence to them as well as a gutter punk style which is based on wearing the same
few clothes, and constantly repairing them, mixed in with a child's way of dressing
very bright and colourfully.
13. Michael Arias
Michael Arias is an American born director - even though most
of his work was done in Japan. For the film Tekkonkinkreet he
was the director, the film was based on the
manga Tekkonkinkreet by Taiyo Matsumoto. The film is of very
high quality for the time as well as it standing the test of time
with it still being very visually engaging. I like the way Arias
incorporated the art style, which Taiyo Matsumoto from the
manga, and made the city and characters really come to life;
making the shots and the way the characters move not look
like a generic anime film.
14. Scumbag Chad (Missing
since Thursday)
Scumbag Chad is the owner and designer of
the brand Missing Since Thursday (MST).
The brand MST is inspired by the gutter
punk style of patched trousers mixed with
Asian street wear, anime’s, fashion trends
from New York (since they are based
there) and biker fashion. I like this brand
because it is unique and you don't see many
people wearing their clothes around. I also
really like the aesthetic and look that they
put into their videos, which are like the
AWGE videos but with more of a punk
aesthetic running through them.
15. Joy Divizn (Vizn Clothing)
Joy Divizn is the owner of Vizn Clothing. The brand is mainly
built around the punk/early 2000's aesthetic. Joy Divizn has
worked with artists like Playboi Carti and has featured in his
music videos and is a part of his collective. I like the brands
unique clothing and the inspiration of the film Fight Club
and how the smart suit look can work with a scruffier style
like punk and high fashion.
16. GOLF WANG
GOLF WANG is Tyler, the Creator’s
clothing brand. These clothes are
usually inspired by what Tyler wears.
The clothing items usually have a
80’s European, as well as, a skater
inspired look.
17. Research reflections
I have chosen all these creative directors in their respective fields
because of what they have produced in their work. I have also looked
at the inspiration behind their pieces, for example MST and Taiyo
Matsumoto and his work in the manga series Tekkonkinkreet and how
his work has inspired pieces for MST and their gutter punk style.
This has made me think that I need to incorporate references to other
media and artists in my work to show a direct link between the brand
and the inspirations.
This has led me think that I might incorporate different work and styles,
from creative types, and try to put these into the videos and images, I
create as a part of my promotional package.
