Do you see the clue word for

Past tense (simple) - I worked

When you spot clue words indicating
past tense: use the past tense!!!!!!!!

Perfect tense (simple) - I have worked
Perfect tense (continuous) - I have been working
When you spot signal words indicating
the perfect tense: use the perfect

Present perfect & Past tense + Past continuous

  • 1. English Language Present Perfect vs Past Simple (& past progressive)
  • 2. Pay attention to clue words!
  • 3. Present perfect Past simple  I have seen Clue words:  since/not yet/up till now/ for how /long/for/just/ ever/never/already /so far/Since when..? /For how long..?  I saw Clue words:  Yesterday/last week/in 1989/before the war/a moment ago/When..?/At what time..?/How long ago..?
  • 4. Let’s have a look at the conjugation of the two tenses

Present perfect Past simple subject + have/has + past participle subject + past simple  I have studied  You have studied  He, she, it has studied  We have studied  You have studied  They have studied  I studied  You studied  He, she, it studied  We studied  You studied  They studied
  • 6. Do you see the clue word for the past tense?
  • 7. Past tense (simple) - I worked Past tense (continuous) - I was working When you spot clue words indicating past tense: use the past tense!!!!!!!!
