1. Maintenance of Certification
In 2000, ABIM began
requiring physicians to
participate in recertification
The recertification process was
called Continuous Professional
Development(CPD)
MOC Pre and Post 2014
By 2006, the Practice Improvement Module
became a requirement and physicianshad to
complete the following components to
become recertified:
*Enroll in MOC
*Pass recertification exam
*100 Self Evaluation Points
-20 medical knowledge
-20 Practice Improvement
-60 points elective
MOC Exam
The recertification exam was later
called the Maintenance of
Certification exam (MOC exam). The
exam and the module requirements
for MOC could be completed in any
order.
Physicians were required to complete 100
self evaluation points (20 points medical
knowledge, 20 points practice
improvement and 60 points elective), a
patient safety and patient voice
requirement every five years. Physicians
were expected to work on these
components continuously by meeting
milestones every two years. At the
milestone physicians had to complete
some MOC activity which would go
towards the 100 points required by the
fifth year.
Fee Changes for MOC
In 2000 physicians had the option to pay
as you go or pay in full, by mid 2005
physicians only had the option to pre-pay
for 10 years. As of 2014, physicians had
the option to pay annually or prepay for
10 years. The MOC fee covers one MOC
exam for each certification area.
"The ABIM Board of
Directors wants all
physicians who work in
patient care and clinical
leadership to join in the
dialogue and shape the
credential in the future. "
"
February 15, 2015 ABIM decided
to suspend the Practice
Improvement, Patient Safety and
Patient Voice requirements
MOC Requirements
MOC 2014
MOC requirements had to completed within a ten year period. Completed modules were valid for ten years. If physicians
took an exam earlier than 10 years from when they last sat, they would receive additional time on their certificate.
The CPD Program was named
Maintenance of Certification (MOC) in
2006 when the Practice Improvement
module (PIM) became a requirement
Physicians are required to
complete 100 self evaluation
points every five years, at
