5. Another way to look at MSE Materials Engineers work on the structure-properties-processing-performance relationships of materials. The “ Materials Tetrahedron” Performance Properties Synthesis/ Processing Structure / Composition
6. Metallic Materials Metals are strong, shiny, and good conductors of heat and electricity. They dominated the field of MSE in the 20th century. The focus of metals research is changing to encompass better processing techniques and newer high-tech metals.
7. Ceramic Materials Ceramics serve many purposes because they are lightweight and resistant to high temperatures.
11. Composite Materials Composites consist of more than one material type. Fiberglass, a combination of glass and a polymer, is an example. Concrete and plywood are other familiar composites. Many new combinations include carbon nanotubes and ceramic fibers in metal or polymer matrix.
12. What do Materials Engineers do? • Design materials. • Design manufacturing processes. • Recommend materials based on properties, processing cost, and marketability. • Help define product and the operating conditions. • Troubleshoot and solve problems with materials selection, production, and service. • Forensic engineering: failure analysis.
