Abstract Human–computer interaction is a discipline concerned with the design, evaluation and implementation of interactive computing systems for human use. The field formally emerged out of computer science, cognitive psychology and industrial design through the 1960s, formulating guidelines for the development of interactive computer systems highlighting usability concerns for improved interfaces. Computing devices are becoming more prevalent and integrated into both our social and work spaces.HCI therefore plays an important role in ensuring that computer systems are not only functional but also respect the needs and capabilities of the humans that use them. HCI encompasses not only ease of use but also new interaction techniques. It involves input and output devices and the interaction techniques that use them; presentation of information, control and monitoring of computer’s actions and the processes that developers follow when creating interfaces. In this seminar, emphasis is laid on the movement of a user’s eyes which can provide a convenient, natural, and high-bandwidth source of additional user input. Some of the human factors and technical considerations that arise in trying to use eye movements as an input medium and the first eye movement-based interaction techniques are discussed in this section. Formal ontologies have proved to be a very useful tool to manage interoperability among data, systems and knowledge. In this paper we will show how formal ontologies can evolve from a crisp, deterministic framework (ontologies of hard knowledge) to new probabilistic, fuzzy or possibilistic frameworks (ontologies of soft knowledge). This can considerably enlarge the application potential of formal ontologies in geographic analysis and planning, where soft knowledge is intrinsically linked to the complexity of the phenomena under study. The paper briefly presents these new uncertainty-based formal ontologies. It then highlights how ontologies are formal tools to define both concepts and relations among concepts. An example from the domain of urban geography finally shows how the cause-to-effect relation between household preferences and urban sprawl can be encoded within a crisp, a probabilistic and a possibilistic ontology, respectively. The ontology formalism will also determine the kind of reasoning that can be developed from available knowledge. Uncertain ontologies can be seen as the preliminary phase of more complex uncertainty-based models. The advantages of moving to uncertainty-based models is evident: whether it is in the analysis of geographic space or in decision support for planning, reasoning on geographic space is almost always reasoning with uncertain knowledge of geographic phenomena.

University of Southampton. Electronics & Computer Science. Research Seminar (Invited Talk). TITLE: From Research Objects to Reproducible Science Tales ABSTRACT. Rumor has it that there is a reproducibility crisis in science. Or maybe there are multiple crises? What do we mean by reproducibility and replicability anyways? In this talk I will first make an attempt at sorting out some of the terminological confusion in this area, focusing on computational aspects. The PRIMAD model is another attempt to describe different aspects of reproducibility studies by focusing on the "delta" between those studies and the original study. In addition to these more theoretical investigations, I will discuss practical efforts to create more reproducible and more transparent computational platforms such as the one developed by the Whole-Tale project: here 'tales' are executable research objects that may combine data, code, runtime environments, and narratives (i.e., the traditional "science story"). I will conclude with some thoughts about the remaining challenges and opportunities to bridge the large conceptual gaps that continue to exist despite the recognition of problems of reproducibility and transparency in science. ABOUT the Speaker. Bertram Ludäscher is a professor at the School of Information Sciences at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and a faculty affiliate with the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) and the Department of Computer Science at Illinois. Until 2014 he was a professor at the Department of Computer Science at the University of California, Davis. His research interests range from practical questions in scientific data and workflow management, to database theory and knowledge representation and reasoning. Prior to his faculty appointments, he was a research scientist at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) and an adjunct faculty at the CSE Department at UC San Diego. He received his M.S. (Dipl.-Inform.) in computer science from the University of Karlsruhe (now K.I.T.), and his PhD (Dr. rer. nat.) from the University of Freiburg, in Germany.

From Research Objects to Reproducible Science Tales

In this talk, I will propose a conceptual framework sketching a path toward open-ended skill acquisition through the coupling of environmental, morphological, sensorimotor, cognitive, developmental, social, cultural and evolutionary mechanisms. I will illustrate parts of this framework through computational experiments highlighting the key role of intrinsically motivated exploration in the generation of behavioral regularity and diversity. Firstly, I will show how some forms of language can self-organize out of generic exploration mechanisms without any functional pressure to communicate. Secondly, we will see how language — once invented — can be recruited as a cognitive tool that enables compositional imagination and bootstraps open-ended cultural innovation. For more:

Despite its obvious success (largest knowledge base ever built, used in practice by companies and governments alike), we actually understand very little of the structure of the Web of Data. Its formal meaning is specified in logic, but with its scale, context dependency and dynamics, the Web of Data has outgrown its traditional model-theoretic semantics. Is the meaning of a logical statement (an edge in the graph) dependent on the cluster ("context") in which it appears? Does a more densely connected concept (node) contain more information? Is the path length between two nodes related to their semantic distance? Properties such as clustering, connectivity and path length are not described, much less explained by model-theoretic semantics. Do such properties contribute to the meaning of a knowledge graph? To properly understand the structure and meaning of knowledge graphs, we should no longer treat knowledge graphs as (only) a set of logical statements, but treat them properly as a graph. But how to do this is far from clear. In this talk, I report on some of our early results on some of these questions, but I ask many more questions for which we don't have answers yet.

This presentation at DH Benelux 2019, receiving one of the two best paper awards, includes findings of the ReVI project. This was a pilot looking at enhancing the Resource Viewer of the CLARIAH Media Suite, where audiovisual materials can be played. Specifically, the ReVI project looked at optimal ways "to support the exploration of different types of content metadata of audiovisual sources, such as segment information or automatic transcripts." During the project, various design thinking sessions were conducted, and a prototype including temporal content visualizations of audiovisual materials was created and evaluated in a user study. The findings of the user study showed a clear value of temporal visualizations and advanced annotation features for research purposes, as well as the continued importance of a data and tool criticism approach. New content exploration tools can benefit scholars doing research with audiovisual sources, for instance in media studies, oral history, film studies, and other disciplines which are increasingly using audiovisual media. The findings documented in the DH Benelux 2019 paper may serve as an inspiration for improving AV-media-based research tools. Concretely, it will also inform the further enhancement of the Resource Viewer of the CLARIAH Media Suite.
