2. Hey peeps!
Let’s embark on this journey with me and learn about my
compilation of artworks and experiences throughout this
two years as a graphic design student.

3. My name is Goh Mei Lu. I have chosen Saito University
College to pursue my Diploma in Graphic Design. I was
raised in Subang, Selangor but born in Ipoh during the
year of 2000. I’m interested in video editing, photography,
illustration and typography. However, I love to spend my
free time reading novels, binge watch movies or playing
music instruments.
I have this hobby which I like to collect beautiful packaging
or price tags with beautiful design since young. Besides
that, I am always attracted to visually appealing creations
and very fond of their creativeness. It inspired me a lot
because there are endless possibilities when it comes

4. While designing, I always get excited to determine the colours,
illustration or text style for my artwork. No doubt that photography
is also my favourite too. It will be a dream come true if I am able to
take pictures of my own and fit it into a travel journal which I
designed. I hoped that someday I might also create my clothing line
that sell graphic tees which I could collaborate with other graphic
designers and make a big impact on the market.
Majority of the time when it comes to work, I’ve always given out
the best I could. I enjoyed exploring the unknown and receiving the
satisfaction after I overcome certain problems. Luckily, having an
inquisitive mind helps to expand my knowledges and gain more
experiences along the way.

5. Here are some visual designs that inspire me to get better and boost my creativity.
I’ve always wanted to try abstract style to create a fun composition with cool elements.
The time lapse videos motivate me to learn and I’m able to gain many ideas from them.

7. While designing booklets and magazine I often used
Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign. Having a
balanced of visual and text create a well-proportioned,
readable design is important for readers to avoid
confusion. In visual hierarchy, the determination of
size, weight, colour, typeface choices will affect the
hierarchy flow and layout design. Appropriate
spacing like leading, tracking and kerning it’s
extremely important too because the space between
characters and line of text will either draw readers
or push them away. Therefore, in order to keep the
readers engaged and entertained these are the
techniques that I learned to transform and make my
designs more appealing.

9. Converting an idea into animation will create a better impression
on audiences. This can be applied on designing logos, websites or even
contents. However, learning about animation required a lot planning
beforehand. In 2D animation design, I’ve learned to create storyboard,
script writing and developed character designs. Kinetic typography
is also one of the animation techniques that uses moving text to
capture attention. These assignments helped me to enhance my
software skills in Adobe After Effects and Adobe Animate whilst
improving on Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator for
image creation and editing.

10. In kinetic typography, knowing the fundamentals of typography is crucial before making texts alive.
Understanding the anatomy of type, choosing the right fonts and type hierarchy will help to convey
the ideas to viewers in an effective way and make it much more entertaining to watch.

11. Animation it’s all about experimenting and receiving feedback from lecturer to improve our work
with lots of exercises and practices on the principals of animation. There are tools that I discovered
in Adobe Animate for instance, motion tween, classic tween and animating transparency etc. Although
animation can be quite time consuming, but the experiences that were gained from the learning progress
will be beneficial in this industry.

12. Thanks to the opportunity given to learn
about photography, I’ve realized how to
operate a camera. Our lecturer will bring
us to different locations to improve our
skills upon learning the photographic
compositions, adjusting basic photography
settings for instance ISO, aperture, shutter
speed etc. During photo shooting, it’s also
important to find the right dynamic angle
and the perfect exposure because it will
produce a better outcome in the pictures.
The techniques I’ve learnt can be
implemented in my product shots, street
photography and videography.

15. SUCCESS
STORY

16. This is one of the artwork that I created in
semester three. It’s currently being showcased
in the gallery at Saito University College. Initially,
there are lot of doubts and fears during the
colouring process, because it was my first time
to experience using colour pencils to draw a
portrait. After a few trials and errors, I did
overcome problems like identifying colors,
colouring techniques and having a low-self
esteem. Without this opportunity, I will not have
a better colour sense and a deeper knowledge
about the colour theory. For that I am very
grateful of what I have achieved.

17. Through the second semester of my study, I was
introduced to use Adobe Illustrator for magazine
cover design. It was challenging to get use of the
pen tool at first, but with patience and persistency
I’ve managed to create a realistic character using
shapes to form the details. Besides that, designing
the layout, choosing the right fonts and colour to
suit the theme is another challenge I have to
breakthrough. However, there is a show of vast
improvement on my observation and illustration
skills after completing this assignment. The
lecturer is very satisfied with my work and I am
very proud of what I’ve achieve and gained from
this experience.

18. INTERNSHIP

19. After spending 11 weeks at LWL CONCEPTS SDN. BHD. (PALLET HOWSE),
I was given different learning opportunities and gained the insights
of social media marketing.
Majority of the task given are required to create posting on social
media platforms, which include visual graphics, videos and copywriting.
I’ve realized effective design provide support towards brand recognition
and connects target audience with the business and services.
This internship has given me a new vision and motivation to pursue
graphic design as a career. I was presented with situations I’ve never
been exposed to before, making improvements on my knowledge and skills.
To survive in this industry, it’s important to be constantly expanding skills
set and be able to take part in strategy session and implementation.

20. In conclusion, I’ve gained many experiences and met a team of young and enthusiastic
people to work with. However, there’s still a lot more to discover in the real world but I’m
grateful that I’m able to develop a growth mindset, accepting the challenges, pushing the
boundaries and embracing my mistakes during this internship.
