School Nickname
“Bronchos” was the nickname selected for Central Oklahoma
in 1922 by Mrs. C.W. Wantland, wife of long-time UCO football
coach C.W. Wantland. The name was chosen from a number of
suggestions for the name of UCO’s football team and became the
nickname for all athletic teams at the school.
Mrs. Wantland was made an honorary member of the Letter-
man’s Club for selecting the nickname, becoming the first woman
admitted to that organization.
School Colors
Bronze and blue were chosen as Central Oklahoma’s school
colors in 1895 by school president Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh.
The first public display of the bronze and blue was in Guthrie when
a student represented UCO in the first oratorical contest ever held
in Oklahoma.

Edmond is located in the heart of Oklahoma, just north of the state
capital in Oklahoma City, and has a population of over 80,000 as one
of the fastest growing cities in the state.
Edmond has the best of both worlds including easy access to the
city with just enough distance to maintain a close-knit community
atmosphere.
The city offers outstanding hotels, nostalgic shopping areas and
conveniently located attractions for your enjoyment. Known for
its outstanding golf courses, Edmond has hosted some of the most
exciting PGA and celebrity events in the past two decades at world-
famous Oak Tree Golf Club.
Edmond is the fastest growing, most economically dynamic city in

our reputation as the affluent residential suburb to the metropolitan

at the crossroads of I-35, I-40 and I-44 in
the heart of Oklahoma.
The second largest city in the continental
United States based on geographical size,
more than 1.1 million people call metro
Oklahoma City area home.
Oklahoma City is surrounded by more
than a dozen communities and offers a
diverse landscape of hip, urban culture and
charming, old-fashioned neighborhoods for
visitors and residents alike.
Oklahoma City’s climate is mild, with
four distinct seasons and an average tem-
perature of 60 degrees. With more than
3,000 hours of sunshine per year, outdoor
recreation and activities are plentiful.

Central Oklahoma will be in its 51st season of play
at Wantland Stadium in 2015.
The 10,000-seat facilty has undergone massive reno-
vations over the past 12 years and now ranks as one
of the finest football stadiums in NCAA Division II.
Artificial turf, new lighting and a scoreboard were
added toWantland Stadium in 2003, while a three-level
press box and new stands on both sides of the field were
installed in 2005. The playing surface was replaced
with FieldTurf in 2012 and an updated, state-of-the-art
scoreboard was added in the summer of 2014.
Named after long-time UCO head coach C.W.
Wantland, the Bronchos played their first game in the
stadium on Sept. 18, 1965, shutting out College of
Ozarks (Ark.) 31-0.
UCO has had nine undefeated home seasons and the
Bronchos have a 161-91-5 record inWantland Stadium,
a 63.6 winning percentage.
UCO’s month-by-month record in the facility is:
August, 0-4 (.000 percent); September, 53-25-2 (67.5 percent); October, 65-39-2 (62.3 percent); November, 41-22-1 (64.8 percent) and
December, 2-1-0 (66.7 percent).
UCO’s longest winning streak at Wantland Stadium is 13, set from 1969-71.
The Bronchos are 5-1 in playoff games at Wantland Stadium, topped by a 14-11 win over Colorado Mesa on Dec. 18, 1982 in the
NAIA national championship game that was televised live on USA Network.
Wantland Stadium is also the home field for all three Edmond high school teams (Memorial, North and Santa Fe) and has hosted the
Oklahoma All-State football game numerous times.

Media Information
Bronchos on the Air
All UCO football games will be broadcast live on Oklahoma City
radio station HANK-FM (99.7).
VeteranannouncerDavidGarrett,formervoiceoftheDallasCowboys
and New Orleans Saints in the NFL, handles the play-by-play action
for the Bronchos with color commentary provided by former UCO
All-American John Fitzgerald.
Pre-game coverage starts 15 minutes before kickoff each week,
including interviews with coaches and players.
Press Credentials
The Wantland Stadium press box is reserved for working media only
and requests for press credentials should be made at least a week in
advance to the UCO Athletic Media Relations Office.
Credentials will be mailed if time permits or they will be left at the
will call window, located at the ticket booth on the southwest side of
Wantland Stadium.
Photographers
All photographers must have their photo passes visible at all times
whileonthesidelineworkingUCOfootballgames,withviolatorssubject
to removal from the field.
NCAA rules prohibit photographers from being in the team areas
between the 25-yard lines. Use of tripods is restricted to the ends of
the playing field. The third level of the press box may also be used.
Press Box Service
Complete individual and team statistics and a running play-by-play
will be distributed in the press box after the completion of each game.
A pre-game meal will be available an hour before kickoff.
There are ample telephone/internet lines available for media use.
The Central Oklahoma Athletic Media
Relations Office is under the direction of
Mike Kirk, whose main duty is to keep lo-
cal, state and national media informed about
UCO’s 15 varsity sports.
Kirk is in his 28th year with the Bronchos,
coming to UCO in November 1987.
Mike started his career in athletic media
relations as a student assistant at Oklahoma
State University, where he worked for
four years and graduated in 1982 with a
journalism degree.
Kirk was a sports writer at newspapers in McAlester and Lawton
for five years before coming to UCO on Nov. 2, 1987.
An active member of the College Sports Information Directors
of America (CoSIDA) who has served on several committees
during his career, Mike worked as the Press Information Manager
for wrestling at the 1996 Olympic Games.
Kirk ended a five-year term on the NCAADivision II Wrestling
Championships Committee last year, serving as chair from 2012-
15. He was inducted into the Oklahoma Chapter of the National
Wrestling Hall of Fame for Lifetime Achievement in the fall of
2012.
Kirk has received 58 CoSIDA publication awards at UCO,
including 27 Best in the Nation citations.
Mike is married (Debbie) and has two children (Alex and

Athletic Administration
Athletic Director
Joe Muller
Now in his eighth year as athletic director at Central Oklahoma is Joe Muller, who has helped return the
Bronchos to national prominence in NCAA Division II.
UCO teams have captured 11 conference championships and had 11 top-10 national finishes during Muller’s
tenure, with softball winning the school’s first-ever women’s national championship in 2013.
Sixty-seven student-athletes have earned All-America honors over the past seven years and the Bronchos
have placed in the top 50 among 350 Division II institutions four times in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup
yearly standings.
The athletic department’s fund-raising efforts have also increased significantly under Joe’s guidance. He
secured the largest gift in program history in 2012, continues to grow Stampede Club membership and also
introduced a corporate sales initiative that has generated record revenues for the program in just four years.
Academically, UCO’s student-athletes are performing at all-time high levels. For the past seven years, the overall grade point aver-
age of student-athletes has surpassed that of the general student population and to demonstrate that academics is a priority, the athletic
department now hosts an annual Academic Awards Banquet recognizing the achievements of student-athletes.
A native of Stillwater, Joe earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Oklahoma State and got his start in athletic administration at
OSU when he served as director of athletic marketing and promotions from 1985-90.
Muller was involved in the television industry for more than a decade before returning to OSU in 2002 as associate athletic director,
serving in that capacity until going to Purdue in ‘06.
He was senior associate athletic director for external relations for the Boilermakers for two years before becoming just the seventh
athletic director in Central’s rich athletic history in July of 2008
Joe is married (Julie) and has three sons (Jaxon, Brandon and Matthew).
President
Dr. Don Betz
Dr. Don Betz became Central Oklahoma’s 20th president in August 2011 after having previously served as
UCO’s Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs from 1999-2005.
President Betz developed several initiatives and programs that helped transform Central into one of the
leading metropolitan universities in the nation during his first stint at the school and he’s been the driving force
in making UCO a destination of choice in higher education since his return to campus.
President Betz has enjoyed a distinguished career in higher education that spans more than 40 years,
developing a reputation for teaching and encouraging students, leadership development and diplomacy through
his international activities, most notably with the United Nations and its affiliated non-government organizations.
Prior to returning to UCO, he served as president of Northeastern State, a post he held for three years. He
also served as Chancellor at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls from 2005 until his appointment at NSU
and as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Palmer College (Iowa) from 1994-1999.
In the 23 years prior, he fulfilled various capacities at NSU, including the Vice President of University Relations and Professor of
Political Science. While at NSU, he also was the Executive Director of the Educational Foundation, Assistant to the President, Dean of
Continuing Education and Special Programs, Director of the Sequoyah Institute/Center for Tribal Studies, the founder and advisor of
the university’s President’s Leadership Class and its Model United Nations program.
From 1982 through 2003, President Betz worked for and with the United Nations on Middle East issues. He founded and chaired
the International Coordinating Committee on the Question of Palestine (ICCP), a UN-affiliated non-governmental organization (NGO)
network pursuing peace in the Middle East based on UN resolutions.
Afrequent writer and speaker, Dr. Betz has addressed international, educational, motivational topics, and has worked with newspapers,
radio and television. His life-long interest in global issues and his passion for promoting cross-cultural understanding has led him to
more than 80 countries.
While president at NSU, he served as the chair of the Northeast Oklahoma Public Facility Authority, board member for BancFirst
in Tahlequah, the Tahlequah Area Chamber of Commerce, Creative Oklahoma, Inc., and chair of the Regional University System of
Oklahoma Council of Presidents. He is a member of the Oklahoma Academy, Leadership Oklahoma, Universities and Colleges Presi-
dent’s Climate Commitment, International Association of University Presidents and has served as Chairman of AASCU’s International
Education Committee.
President Betz received his B.A. in Political Science and Philosophy from the University of San Francisco and his M.A. and Ph.D.
in International Studies from the Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Denver. He also completed Harvard
University’s Institute for Educational Management.

Assistant Athletic Director/Business
Britni Brannon
Serving as Central Oklahoma’s assistant athletic director for business is Britni Brannon, who is also UCO’s senior women’s admin-
istrator.
An Oklahoma native, Brannon graduated from UCO in 2002 and spent the next five years working for an audio/visual company
doing marketing, advertising and materials management.
ACertified Procurement Officer with the State of Oklahoma, Brannon returned to UCO in 2007 as a Buyer II in the Purchasing, Payment
Services & Travel Department and was in that capacity until moving to the athletic department as business manager in the fall of 2012.
Britni is married (Todd) and has one son (Alex).
Assistant Athletic Director/Operations
Gunnar Poff
Gunnar Poff is in his second year as Central Oklahoma’s assistant athletic director for operations after serving the department as
coordinator of ticket sales the previous four years.
Poff manages the day-to-day operations of UCO’s Athletic Department. He also serves as sport supervisor for five sports and is
responsible for the areas of athletic training, strength and conditioning, ticketing and game-day operations.
Anative of Sayre, Gunnar was a pitcher for the Southwestern Oklahoma baseball team during the mid-2000s and earned his bachelor’s
degree in health and physical education from SWOSU in 2007.
Poff went on to earn a master’s of education in intercollegiate athletics administration in 2009 from the University of Oklahoma,
working in the office of event management during his tenure at OU.
Gunnar is married (Tessa) and has three daughters (Presley, Piper and Devyn).
Athletic Compliance
Darnell Smith
In his sixth year as Central Oklahoma’s Director of Athletic Compliance is Darnell Smith, who came to UCO after serving in the same
capacity at the University of New Mexico.
A native of San Antonio, Texas, Smith was a four-year member of the Oklahoma State football team from 2002-06 at defensive end.
He was a three-time recipient of the Arthur Ashe Scholar award at OSU and also earned second-team honors on the ESPN the Magazine
Academic All-America Team.
Darnell was named OSU’s Outstanding Senior and earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from there. He served as a graduate
assistant in the OSU compliance office in 2007-08 and worked as a management development trainee for the United States Olympic
Committee from June 2008 to February 2009.
Smith went to New Mexico in February of 2009 and was there until coming to UCO.
He is married (Candace).
Athletic Compliance
Jeremy Rogers
Jeremy Rogers joined the Central Oklahoma Athletic Department in November of 2012 as Compliance Coordinator.
A native of Medford, Rogers played football for four years at Southern Nazarene and earned all-conference honors at tight end as a
senior. He graduated SNU in 2007 with a degee in sports managment.
Jeremy went on to law school at Oklahoma, earning his juris doctor degree there. He worked as an intern in the compliance depart-
ment and Office of Legal Counsel while at OU.
Jeremy is married (Rachel) and has one son (Mason).
Athletic Marketing/Sponsorships
Brandon Baker
Now in his sixth year with the Central Oklahoma athletic department is Brandon Baker, who is responsible for corporate sponsor-
ships and marketing for athletic events on the UCO campus. He works with local, regional and national businesses to create memorable
experiences for both fans and sponsors.
Baker was at the Oklahoma City RedHawks for 10 years before coming to UCO, working with corporate sponsorships, baseball
operations, game-day experience and the ticket office manager. He spent two years prior to that with the West Tennessee Diamond
Jaxx, a minor league affiliate of the Chicago Cubs.
A native of Fulton, Mo., Baker is a University of Missouri graduate and was involved with the Mizzou chapter of Fellowship of
Christian Athletes.
Brandon is married (Erin) and has two sons (Benjamin and Evan).

UCO Athletic Hall of Fame
The University of Central Oklahoma Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 1990 to honor and recognize the many outstanding student-
athletes, coaches, administrators and other supporters who have played a key role in the success of UCO athletics over the past 100-plus years.
UCO’s 1962 NAIA national championship squad will become the first team inducted into the UCO Athletic Hall of Fame this fall. There are
127 individual members of UCOAthletic Hall of Famers, with 42 of those having played or coached football at least one season for the Bronchos

Director of Stampede Club
Al Jones
Al Jones joined the Central Oklahoma Athletic Department as Director of the Stampede Club in July 2014.
The Stampede Club is the athletic booster club for all UCO sports and helps support the athletic department through financial
contributions and other events.
Jones, who has been involved with Broncho athletics in a variety of ways since the early 1960s, served as Executive Director and
Membership Coordinator of Alumni Relations at UCO for six years before joining the athletic department.
Jones was a student trainer and manager for the 1962 Central football team that won the NAIAnational championship and he earned
both bachelor’s (1966) and master’s (1974) degrees in education from UCO.
A past member of both the 45th Infantry Division Army National Guard and United States Air Force Reserves, Jones was a teacher
for many years at Stillwater and Millwood in addition to serving as headmaster/superintendent at Oklahoma Christian Schools.
He worked in private business from 1998 until coming to UCO in April 2008 as Executive Director of Alumni Relations.
Al is married (Sharon) and has two sons (Jon and Jeff).
Coordinator of Athletic Ticket Sales
Ethan Hooker
In his second year as Central Oklahoma’s coordinator of ticket sales is Ethan Hooker, who came to the Bronchos just before the
start of the 2014 football season.
Hooker worked as ticket sales and operations assistant for the Tulsa Drillers for eight months before coming to UCO. He also spent
two summers interning with the Lakeshore Chinooks, a collegiate summer league baseball club in Mequon, Wis.
Born in Chicago, Hooker spent most of his life in suburban Atlanta and attended Georgia Southern. He earned a bachelors in sport
management from GSU in December 2013.

Bobeck, who became UCO’s 13th head coach on Jan. 4,
2012 following a sparkling four-year head coaching stint at
junior college powerhouse Navarro (Texas) College, has a
12-20 record with the Bronchos.

Nick took over as head coach the next year, with his first
squad finishing 10-1 and ranked fourth in the final poll. An
11-1 campaign and No. 3 ranking followed in 2009.

Bobeck and the Bulldogs put it all together in 2010, follow-
ing a season-opening loss with 11 consecutive wins to finish
11-1 and capture the NJCAAnational championship. Navarro
was 10-2 in 2012, finishing fifth in the final ranking.
Nick’s wife, Keely, is in her third year as an assistant coach
for the UCO softball team and has helped the Bronchos go
82-37 in earning two consecutive Division II national tourna-
ment berths. They have two children -- a son (Tucker, born
in April 2012) and a daughter (Miller, born in June 2014).

Russ Pickett
Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator
In his fourth year as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at Central Oklahoma is Russ Pickett,
who also serves as recruiting coordinator for the Bronchos.
Pickett spearheaded a defensive turnaround that helped spur the UCO to its best season in 10 years in 2014
as the Bronchos went 8-4 and finished third in the rugged Mid-America IntercollegiateAthleticsAssociation.
Pickett was part of head coach Nick Bobeck’s staff at Navarro College, working as defensive/recruiting
coordinator in 2010 and ‘11. He helped lead the team to a 21-3 record, the 2010 junior college national
championship and back-to-back conference titles.
Russ directed a unit that led the conference in defensive scoring both years at Navarro. He coached 12
all-conference players while with the Bulldogs, including one first-team All-American.
Anative of Camden,Ark., Pickett was a four-year letterman as an offensive lineman at Division II Ouachita
Baptist, serving as team captain his senior year.
He started his coaching career at Division II Southern Arkansas, spending two years as a graduate assistant before taking over as
defensive line coach in 2005 and then moving to the secondary in 2006.
Pickett coached three players who signed with NFL teams during his tenure with the Muleriders, including defensive tackle Cedric
Thornton, who is currently on the Philadelphia Eagles roster.
Russ moved on to Fort Scott Community College as defensive coordinator in 2007, spending two years there.
The Greyhounds went 9-3 in 2007 as Pickett’s defensive unit finished 10th nationally in total defense, with four players earning all-
conference honors. Pickett’s defense posted five shutouts and allowed a conference-low 6.9 points a game during a 9-2 campaign in
2008 as seven players earned all-conference honors and three were named All-American.
Pickett spent the 2009 season as defensive coordinator at Benton (Ark.) High School before going to Navarro.
Russ, who received his bachelor’s in physical education from OBU and his master’s in educational leadership from SAU, is married
(Kristin) and has two daughters (Lexie and Ella Grace).
Assistant Coaches
Chris Martin
Offensive Coordinator
Serving as Central Oklahoma’s offensive coordinator for the fourth straight season is Chris Martin, a
former player for the Bronchos who has extensive experience as a Division I assistant coach.
Martin helped lead a turnaround that saw UCO put together its best season in 10 years in 2014 with an
8-4 record and third-place finish in the rugged Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. Martin’s
offensive unit averaged 27.7 points a game behind a balanced attack that saw the Bronchos average 192.0
yards a game passing and 189.5 rushing.
A four-year offensive line letterman at UCO from 1998-01, Chris coached at three different Division I
schools and came to Edmond after spending the previous two years as offensive coordinator/offensive line
coach at Division III Birmingham-Southern.
Martin, who is also in charge of the offensive line at UCO, helped lead BSC to a 6-4 record in 2010 when
the Panthers averaged 35 points and 254 rushing yards a game while producing four all-conference linemen
and the league’s first 1,000-yard rusher in four years.
BSC won a school-record seven games in 2011, finishing 7-2 and breaking into the top 25 for the first time. Martin’s offensive unit
ranked seventh in the nation with a 300-yard per-game rushing average while featuring an All-America running back and three all-
conference offensive linemen.
Anative of Prague, Chris spent a redshirt year at New Mexico before transferring to UCO and playing from 1998-01. He helped lead the
Bronchos to two Lone Star Conference championships and back-to-back Division II playoff appearances in 1998 and ’99 during his career.
Martin spent a few years in private business before beginning his coaching career at Division I Rice, spending one year as a defensive
graduate assistant coach and helping the Owls to a 7-6 record in 2006.
Chris moved on to Tulsa in the same capacity, serving as a defensive graduate assistant in 2007 when the Golden Hurricane went 10-4
and won the GMAC Bowl. He took over as an assistant offensive line coach in 2008, with TU finishing 11-3 and winning the Confer-
ence-USA West Division title while leading Division I in total offense and having three offensive linemen earn all-conference honors.
Martin went to Division I power Auburn as an assistant offensive line coach the next year, with the Tigers going 8-5 in 2009 and
winning the Outback Bowl. Two offensive linemen made all-conference and the offense improved from 102nd to 16th in the country
in total offense.
Chris, who earned his bachelor’s in education from UCO and his master’s in education from Tulsa, is married (Stephanie).

Assistant Coaches
David Johnson
Quarterbacks
David Johnson joined the Central Oklahoma staff as quarterbacks coach in the spring of 2014 and
the former Division I quarterback had an immediate impact in helping the Bronchos to an 8-4 finish
last season.
Quarterback Chas Stallard was named Mid-America IntercollegiateAthleticsAssociation Freshman
of the Year in 2014 after racking up 2,855 yards total offense under Johnson’s guidance, the third-best
single-season total in UCO history.
Johnson came to the Bronchos after serving one year as quarterback coach at Tulsa, his alma mater.
He started his coaching career at TU in 2009, spending one year as a graduate assistant before going
to Sherman High School as offensive coordinator.
David was at Sherman for three years, helping lead the Bearcats to a 29-9 record during that span.
He coached 22 offensive All-District players -- including a pair of District offensive MVPs -- before returning to TU in 2013.
A native of Portland, Ore., Johnson spent five years as a player at TU and helped the Golden Hurricane to one Conference USA
championship and three bowl game titles.
He took over as starter his senior season and completed 258-of-400 passes for 4,059 yards and 46 touchdowns in spearheading
TU’s No. 1-ranked offense, finishing with a 178.69 passer rating that was second-best in the country to Heisman Trophy winner
Sam Bradford of Oklahoma.
Johnson, a four-time Academic All-Conference USA selection, earned degrees in exercise and sports science and education
from TU and graduated Magna Cum Laude.
Davis is married (Katherine).
Tyler Holland
Defensive Backs
In his second year as an assistant coach for Central Oklahoma is Tyler Holland, who took over a
full-time role with his alma mater before the 2014 season after serving as a graduate assistant for the
Bronchos the previous two seasons.
Holland coaches defensive backs and played a key role in a defensive turnaround last season that
resulted in an 8-4 record and third-place conference finish for UCO. The Bronchos had 16 intercep-
tions in 2014 after picking off just four passes the previous year.
Tyler played safety from 2003-05 and earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history
from UCO.
Holland worked in private business for several years after graduation before starting his coaching
career at Norman High School in 2010. He coached there for two seasons before coming to the Bron-
chos as a graduate assistant in 2012.
Tyler was a prep standout at Norman High School before coming to UCO.

Assistant Coaches
Walter Moreham
Defensive Line
Walter Moreham is in his fourth year on the Central Oklahoma staff, with the former letterman from
Division I powerhouse Louisiana State coaching the defensive line for the Bronchos.
Moreham’s line unit played a key role in UCO’s defensive turnaround in 2014 that was instrumental
in helping the Bronchos place third in the rough Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association
and finish with an 8-4 record.
Moreham came to UCO after serving as an assistant coach in charge of linebackers on head coach
Nick Bobeck’s staff at Navarro College in 2011. He helped the Bulldogs win the conference champi-

A three-year letterman at LSU, Walter was the team’s Special Teams Player of the Year in 2001 and
played in three bowl games for the Tigers
He stayed at LSU to start his coaching career as a graduate assistant and spent two seasons in that capacity, with the Tigers
winning the 2003 national title while Moreham helped coach linebackers, defensive backs and special teams.
Moreham spent a year working as a linebackers/scouting intern with the Houston Texans of the NFL before entering the high
school ranks, serving as defensive coordinator at two of three stops in the Houston area during a five-year span before going to
Navarro in 2011.
Walter, who earned his bachelor’s degree from LSU, is married (Jennifer) and has three daughters (Victoria, Cameran and Casyn).
Jason Smelser
Linebackers/Special Teams Coordinator
Jason Smelser joined the Central Oklahoma staff in the summer of 2014 and the former head coach
played a pivotal role in helping the Bronchos to their best season in 10 years.
Smelser coaches linebackers while also serving as special teams coordinator and both units were
key components last fall when UCO went 8-4 and placed third in the ultra-competitive Mid-America
Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
Jason came to the Bronchos after a three-year stint as an assistant at NCAADivision II rival Henderson
State. He coached running backs, tight ends and fullbacks in 2011 before becoming linebacker coach/
strength and conditioning coordinator in 2012.
Smelser helped the Reddies to a 21-2 record during his two seasons there, with HSU winning back-
to-back Great American Conference championships in making consecutive trips to the Division II
playoffs. He was named Samson Equipment’s NCAA Division II Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year by American
Football Monthly after the 2012 season.
A native of Monroe, La., Smelser was a prep standout at Ouachita Christian High School before going on to play at Southern
Arkansas. He was a four-year letterman and three-year starter at running back for the Muleriders, earning All-Gulf South Confer-
ence honors once.
Jason stayed on at SAU to start his coaching career as a graduate assistant in 1999-00 and then served as defensive line coach
from 2001-04, helping lead the Muleriders to the Division II playoffs in 2003 when his line totaled 30 sacks.
Smelser became defensive coordinator at Iowa Wesleyan in 2005 and added head coaching duties the following season. He
stayed with the NAIA-member Tigers until 2009 and then spent the 2010 season as defensive coordinator/head strength coach at
Concordia (Mich.) before going to Henderson State.
Jason, who earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Southern Arkansas, is married (Wendy) and has two children
(Madison and Slade).

Graduate Assistants
Austin Moss
In his second year as a graduate assistant coach for Central Oklahoma is Austin Moss, a former Division I player.
Moss works with linebackers and helped UCO to its best season since 2004 last fall as the Bronchos went 8-4 and
played in the Mineral Water Bowl.
Agraduate of Rockwall-Heath (Texas) High School,Austin started his college career atArkansas. He lettered one year
with the Razorbacks, transferred to Navarro (Texas) College for one year under UCO head coach Nick Bobeck and then
played his final two years at Louisiana-Monroe.
Moss earned his bachelor’s degree from ULM and is working on his master’s in adult education with an emphasis in
industrial safety.
Justin Pruitt
In his second year as a graduate assistant coach for the Bronchos is former UCO offensive lineman Justin Pruitt.
Pruitt served as a student assistant coach for UCO in 2013 before moving into a graduate assistant’s role last year, coaching
tight ends/H-backs. He helped the Bronchos go 8-4 and appear in the Mineral Water Bowl in their best since since 2004.
Justin spent five years as an offensive lineman with the Bronchos, redshirting in 2008 and then lettering as back-up in
2009. He started all season as a sophomore in 2010 and was part of a unit that allowed just five sacks -- second-best in
Division II -- in 430 pass attempts.
Pruitt started the first three games of 2011 before suffering a season-ending injury and attempted to return the next
season before again being sidelined by injury.
A two-way line starter at Choctaw High School, Pruitt collected All-District, All-Conference and Oklahoman Big
All-City recognition as a senior. He played in the Oil Bowl and Jim Thorpe all-star games following his final season.
Justin received his bachelor’s degree from UCO in 2014 and is working on his master’s in biology.
Tony Savino
Tony Savino is in his third year as a graduate assistant coach with the Central Oklahoma program.
Savino, who coaches running backs, came to UCO after spending the previous two years as a graduate assistant in
charge of linebackers at Southwestern Oklahoma. He helped the Bronchos to an 8-4 record and Mineral Water Bowl
appearance in 2014 in their best season in 10 years.
Tony coached at Cisco Junior College in 2009 and ’10, working with linebackers and defensive linemen.
A native of Anaheim, Calif., Savino was a three-year starter on the offensive line at Orange Lutheran High School and
earned All-Orange County honors as a senior.
He went on play at Texas Christian, lettering three years with the Horned Frogs.
Savino received his bachelor’s degree in history from TCU in 2008 and a master’s in sports management from SWOSU
in 2012. He’s working toward a second master’s degree in adult education at UCO.
Christian Hood
Central Oklahoma record-holder Christian Hood is in his first year as a graduate assistant coach with the Bronchos.
Hood was a four-year starter at wide receiver, finishing his career last season as the school’s all-time leader in receptions
with 185 while ranking third in career yardage with 2,077.
Christian, who is coaching wide receivers, had an immediate impact at UCO as a true freshman in 2011 when he led
the team in catches (54) and was second in yards (530). He was an honorable mention All-Mid-America Intercollegiate
Athletics Association pick in 2012 after topping the Bronchos in receptions (47) and yards (573).
Hood had 37 catches for 483 yards in 2013 and then grabbed 47 passes for 491 yards as a senior last year in again
earning honorable mention All-MIAA honors. He caught at least one pass in 42 of 43 career games.
An All-State pick at Tulsa Union High School who caught the game-winning touchdown pass in the Class 6A state
finals as a senior, Christian received his bachelor’s degree in political science in the spring of 2015.
Alex Knox
In his second year as a graduate assistant coach with the Central Oklahoma football program is Alex Knox, who will
help coach defensive backs.
Knox helped guide the Bronchos to an 8-4 record in 2014, which included a third-place finish in the Mid-America
Intercollegiate Athletics Association and an appearance in the Mineral Water Bowl
A two-year starter on the offensive line at Norman High School who earned All-District honors as a senior, Knox
coached the offensive line at Sand Springs High School in 2011-12. He was offensive line/running backs coach at Kiefer
High School from 2012-14 before coming to UCO.
Alex is working on his degree in communications.

entral Oklahoma took baby steps during the first two years
of head coach Nick Bobeck’s tenure before making a giant
leap last season and the Bronchos are ready to continue their
upward trend in 2015.
UCO ended a string of five straight losing seasons with a break-
through 8-4 campaign last year, finishing third in the rugged Mid-
America Intercollegiate Athletics Association -- arguably the toughest
conference in NCAA Division II -- and playing in the Mineral Water
Bowl for its first post-season appearance since 2003.
Contending for the conference championship is next and the Bron-
chos appear poised to do just that with the return of 42 lettermen,
including 17 starters, to go with an influx of redshirts and a talented
freshmen class.
‘‘Everything’s a process,” said Bobeck as he enters his fourth season
at the helm. ‘‘Our kids had visual evidence last year that what
we’re doing does work. I think we’ve turned the corner on
getting a true buy-in from the players.
‘‘Last year we got beat by four football teams that were
better than us. We return a lot of guys and are older now
and we have a chance to take another step.”
UCO will feature a potent offense as nine starters
are back, including the entire offensive line and several
electrifying skill position players. The defense should
continue to improve with some of the league’s best
among the seven returning starters and the Bronchos
also feature one of the MIAA’s top place-kickers.
‘‘We’re not going to sneak up on anybody this year,
that’s for sure,” Bobeck said. ‘‘I think that happened
some last year, but not now and we’ve got to be ready
for that.
‘‘We have a team that’s got a chance to go com-
pete for a championship and that’s what we’re
focused on.”
Here’s a position-by-position look at UCO:
Offense
LINE: Ready to set the tone for what promises
to be a high-octane offense is a line that returns all
five starters from last year. The Bronchos moved
some players around during spring drills and there’s
no question this is a major team strength.
Landon Chappell (6-2, 283) is the lone senior
up front and will fill a starting role at right guard
for the fourth consecutive year, with sophomore
standout Leighton Light (6-2, 280) set to be on the other side after
moving over from center during the spring.
Sophomores Sam Noble (6-5, 295) and Mvhayv Locust (6-8, 280)
are the front-runners for the top tackle spots, with Noble a returning
starter and Locust a letterman featuring great potential.
Junior Brandon Waggoner (6-1, 305) was one of the best tackles in
the MIAAthe past two seasons before switching positions in the spring
and will anchor the line at center.
Senior Montana Poorboy (6-3, 299), juniors Mason McLaughlin
(6-3, 270) and Micah Goodman (6-5, 297) and sophomore Aaron
Williams (6-3, 318) are returning lettermen who will push for playing
time, with several redshirt freshmen also looking to help.
Bobeck Says: ‘‘We had a real solid group up front last year and
they’re all a year older. We shuffled some people in the spring and have
really good competition at all five spots, which make us better across
the board. We’re really excited about what we have on the offensive
line and the success they can have.”
RECEIVER: UCO lost two senior standouts here, but several
experienced players return and this looks to be an area of strength.
Junior Connor Pulley (6-4, 220) is a big-play threat and leads the
way after catching 24 passes for 409 yards and four touchdowns last
season in his second year as a starter. He will be a main target this fall
after topping the team in both yards per catch (17.0) and TDs.
Sophomore speedsters Josh Crockett (6-4, 195) and Myles Tease
(5-10, 175) showed great potential last season and will see plenty of
passes thrown their way. Crockett had 17 receptions for 227 yards and
two TDs a year ago, while Tease had 13 catches for 161 yards.
Senior Caden Locke (6-0, 185) is a three-year letterman who lends
great experience and sophomore Zach Hill (6-4, 225) was a part-time
starter at tight end/H-back last year before switching
positions in the spring.
The Bronchos also expect junior transfer J.T.
Luper (5-9, 175) and sophomore Easton Pingleton
(5-11, 185) to push for action along with a host of
newcomers.
Bobeck Says: ‘‘We’re talented at the wide
receiver position, there’s no question about
that. It’s just finding the group that fits best
with our quarterbacks. The most consistent
player and our glue guy is Connor Pulley.
We’ve got some other really talented kids back
and feel good about what they can do.”
TIGHT END/H-BACK: A true freshman
stepped out of a redshirt season and into a starting
role after four games last year and UCO is looking
for more big things from sophomore Caleb Moss (6-3,
230) at this crucial position.
Moss caught 26 passes for 302 yards and one touchdown
after taking over while also showcasing excellent blocking
ability and will continue to grow as an offensive threat.
Junior Kyle Aschenbrenner (6-5, 246) is a tough, physical
player looking to return to the field after missing the last two
seasons to injury, while redshirt freshman Tyler Sipe (6-3,
220) provides additional depth. Several freshmen will also
look to help out here.
Bobeck Says: ‘‘This is a hard position in our offense and
Moss did a great job coming in like he did last year. He gives
us a different dynamic and has a chance to be really good.
Aschenbrenner is a tough football player who can help us and
Sipe is very athletic.”
RUNNING BACK: Junior Jake Gandara (5-10, 195) took over the
starting reigns as the feature back last season and had an outstanding
year, with even more expected of the budding star in 2015.
Gandara was a second-team All-MIAA selection and ranked among
the league leaders in rushing with 1,121 yards and 13 touchdowns on
194 carries, averaging a healthy 5.8 yards an attempt. He also ranked
second on the team in receptions with 39 for 286 yards and averaged
20.5 yards per kickoff return in finishing with 1,632 all-purpose yards.
Sophomore Clay McKenzie (5-11, 200) is the main back-up and
junior Greg Johnson (5-9, 180) will also see action after switching
over from wide receiver late last year. McKenzie had 246 yards and
three TDs in 63 tries a season ago and is a punishing runner.
Bobeck Says: ‘‘Jake is quietly a really, really good football player.
He had an outstanding year and if you watch video of him, he does stuff
that makes him a difference maker. Clay is a tough, rugged kid who is
great in relief for us and Greg gives us a different gear at the position.”

Season Outlook
QUARTERBACK: Back to spearhead what promises to be a
high-powered offensive attack is Chas Stallard (6-0, 210), a dynamic
dual-threat sophomore who made scores of game-changing plays last
year after earning the startering role in the pre-season.
Stallard was named the MIAAFreshman of theYear after completing
64.3 percent of his passes for 2,108 yards and eight touchdowns while
also running for a single-season school quarterback-record 747 yards
and nine scores.
The Bronchos have good depth here as well with juniors T.J. Eckert
(6-0, 205) and Darrack Harger (6-5, 235). Eckert has shown what
he can do while making several starts the past two years and Harger
possesses a rocket arm capable of really igniting the passing game.
Bobeck Says: ‘‘We had really good competition at this position
in the spring. Chas made a lot of plays for us last year and got us
out of some jams, so we’re excited about what he does for us.
T.J. keeps us out of bad football plays and knows how
to operate our offense and Hager can make throws
that many people can’t. It will be hard to unseat
Chas, but we’ll see what happens in camp.”
Defense
LINE: The Bronchos appear to be
in great shape on the defensive front,
highlighted by a pair of veterans on the inside in senior
Kenny Allen (6-2, 286) and junior Deontay Wilson (6-2, 296).
Allen was a second-teamAll-MIAApick and earned third-team
All-America honors from one publication last year after racking
up 10.5 tackles for loss with 7.5 sacks. Wilson enters his third
year as a starter and draws plenty of attention in the middle
of the line.
Senior Antonio Guy (6-1, 285) and sophomores Dillon
Rice (6-3, 285), B.J. Scott (6-2, 274) and Collis
Walker (6-2, 270) are returning lettermen who
provide excellent depth inside.

Clayton (6-1, 220) the front-runner to earn the other starting spot.
Junior Tanner Rice (6-2, 245) and a host of redshirt freshmen will
also contend for playing time at end.
Bobeck Says: ‘‘As the defensive line goes is how our football
team will go. Allen and Wilson are two of the best in our conference
and are talented kids we need to have big years. Defensive end is a
position with the most question marks right now and we may end up
moving guys from inside. This is a pretty talented group, but a lot of
them are untested.”
LINEBACKER: UCO must replace several key players in the
linebacking corps, but has some returning experience and should also
get help from newcomers and redshirts.
Sophomore Cade Shearwood (6-1, 215) is the lone returning full-
time starter and is back on the weak side after accumulating 31 tackles
with 5.0 for loss last season. Senior Jason Frimpong (5-11, 220) is a
two-year letterman who will also see plenty of action there.
The Bronchos moved seniors Malcolm Howard (6-2, 220) and
Tanner Koons (6-2, 220) to fill a void in the middle and are confident
in their abilities to take over the post. The multi-talented Howard made
72 tackles in a part-time starting role last year and is a potential star,
while Koons is a rock-solid veteran with 101 career tackles.
Taking over on the strong side will be either redshirt freshman Colton
Lindsey (6-3, 215), who moved over from quarterback in the spring, or
junior transfer Ben Jones (6-0, 205). Sophomore Dylan Ward (5-10,
190) could also be a factor there.
Bobeck Says: ‘‘The biggest question on the defensive side of the
ball is who’s going to step up in the middle. We think Howard will
take over and I think he’s starting to take a leadership role. Koons
has played a bunch of football for us the last three years and is a good
football player. Colton Lindsey is raw, but has a chance to be real
productive and Jones is going to help us. We feel good
about Shearwood and Frimpong, they both played
really fast in the spring.”
SECONDARY: Four players with
extensive starting experience and
several other lettermen return here,
giving the Bronchos more depth
than in recent years.
Senior Levonte Douglas (5-
9, 172) has 26 career starts and
is back at a cornerback slot after
making 37 tackles with two interceptions last
fall. Speedy sophomore Omari Cole (5-11,
190) started the final five games in 2014 and is
primed for a breakthrough season.
Senior Cody Jones (6-0, 205) returned two of
his team-high four interceptions for touchdowns
last year before missing most of the last five games
to injury and was moved from cornerback to strong
safety in the spring. Senior David Busby (5-11, 210)
made 46 tackles as the starting free safety last year and
gives UCO great consistency.
Ready to provide quality help are a trio of sophomore
lettermen -- Braden Calip (5-9, 196), Addison Staggs (5-11,
178) and Riley Galyon (5-11, 200) -- and a group of redshirt freshmen.
Bobeck Says: ‘‘We feel good about where we are in that we finally
have some depth on the back end. Levonte has started three years and
is really consistent and Cole is very talented. Cody Jones could move
back if needed, he was extremely productive last year and we really
like him at safety. Busby is back and had a good spring. There are
others who can push for playing time.”
Special Teams
The return of one of the league’s top kickers highlights what should
be a productive special teams unit.
Junior Seth Hiddink (6-4, 215) will handle the place-kicking chores
for the third straight year and has scored 150 career points, having made
72-of-76 extra points and 26-of-36 field goals.
Senior Ryan Kowalewski (5-11, 210) is back as the all-important
deep snapper and two newcomers -- junior Christian Fulham (6-0,
240) and redshirt freshman Jake Huff (6-0, 175) -- are expected to
battle it out for the punting job.
UCO has plenty of choices in the return game, though sophomore
Jake Gandara (5-10, 195) should be one of the main men on kickoffs
and junior J.T. Luper (5-9, 175) is being counted on to handle punts.
Bobeck Says: ‘‘Seth Hiddink has been really good for us the last two
years and he’s had a great off-season. Kowalewski is the most consistent
kid on our football team and is as good as I’ve been around. We’ve got
two kids at punter and feel strongly about both of them. This is where
we think we can make as big a jump on our football team as anywhere.
We’ve got lots of options in returns and will have open competition.”
