CURRENT CHARITY ROLES
• As part of Anthony Nolan’s Register & Be A Lifesaver (R&Be) education program I have
now fully trained as a volunteer to give inspirational presentations to 16–18-year-olds
explaining how they could save a life through bone marrow, blood and organ donation. I have
spent 2015 visiting Schools within Hampshire and Dorset.
• Working as a volunteer for the The Stable Family Home Trust (SFHT), which is a Registered
Charity that supports people with a learning disability to lead ordinary lives with some
extraordinary moments. Loving every minute of it and hopefully making a small difference!
• In 2014 I joined a wonderful charity KOP (Kenyan Orphan Project), which was started in 2001
and has since helped rebuild the lives of thousands of the poorest and disadvantaged children in
the world. On November 14th 2014, myself and 49 other intrepid riders flew to Uganda on the
start of an epic 450km cycle ride - Making Tracks 2014. The route took us from Kampala,
through south east Uganda and Jinja (the source of the River Nile), across the border and round
Lake Victoria into Kenya, finishing in Kisumu 6 days later. I raised over £3000 in sponsorship for
the charity, and overall the team raised over £150,000 for KOP.
• On my return from Africa I enrolled immediately on a one-year Apprenticeship Scheme being
run by KOP, which then changed its brand to CHILD.org in the summer of 2015. The scheme
teaches participants everything about the third-sector world and provides grounding and support
for entry into charities across the world. As part of this scheme I was able to return to Kisumu in
Kenya as a team leader supporting the Kunya Primary School project. As part of the team we
worked very closely with the School, the local community and the children in building a Kitchen
Garden, a Nursery and an Orchard for the school. We also developed an Operational Manual
and I am currently working on a Business Plan for the Primary School for sustained
development.
• I have recently become a Progression Mentor for the Princes Trust and am awaiting my first
assignment.
• In the longer term, setting up my own charity which will establish a Buddying Scheme between
the Elderly and Teenagers. Initial pilot in my own town using Local Government funding.
KEY CHARITABLE ACHIEVEMENTS include
· As part of the CHILD.org Charity Apprentice Scheme, visited a number of Projects in Kisumu
in Kenya. I was assigned as a Team Leader for Kunya Primary School where we built a
Kitchen Garden, a Nursery and an Orchard and developed an Operational Manual for
sustainable development of the School.
· Cycled 450 kilometres from Kampala in Uganda to Kisumu in Kenya for CHILD.org. The
team of 50 riders raised over £150,000 for the charity and I personally raised over £3,000.
· Over the last 5 years created and then organised bespoke multi-event challenges in such
areas as the; Lake District, Yorkshire Moors and Brecon Beacons. Team-based events for 20-25
people, working closely with local activity centres. Raised over £50,000 for Demelza House
Children’s Hospice and £10,000 for the Kent Air Ambulance: My company subsequently
won three prestigious Demelza awards, including myself winning the Outstanding
Individual Fundraiser of the Year award in 2011. In addition asked to take part in a
documentary film for Demelza House to promote support and sponsorship.
· Raised over C$50,000 for United Way of the Lower Mainland, British Columbia: This
occurred over a 3- year period by organising such events as a 24-hour cross-Canada
hitchhike in drag, 24 hour non-stop walk in the Canadian Rockies, charity fashion show and
various sporting events. Responsible for all fundraising, marketing, public relations and
logistic planning for all events. Appeared on a number of Canadian radio stations to
advertise and promote events. Awarded a United Way Fundraiser of the Year award.
· Created and organised themed Auction Balls on behalf of the New Forest Region and
raised £20,000 for Friends of Chernobyl Children charity: Included setting up and
chairing event committees and sourcing auction prizes. This money enabled groups of
children from Belarus to come to the UK for a month every year over a five year period to get
treatment and recuperation from the horrendous and debilitating effects of the radiation.
· Raised over C$15,000 for Autism Support: This equated to a whole year of teaching
support and therapy for a severely autistic boy in Vancouver and was achieved by climbing
Grouse Mountain in shackles and shaving my entire body to encourage donations. Secured
National TV and Radio coverage to highlight lack of support for such affected families. The
event helped contribute to a re-evaluation by the Canadian Government on financial support
for children with such disabilities.
· Raised C$5,000 for The British Heart Foundation by running the Vancouver 10K
backwards.
· Raised £5,000 each for UNICEF and a children’s primary school by completing the UK
