In 2003, Professor Sir Peter Mansfield of the University of Nottingham was awarded the
Nobel Prize for Medicine for his work in the development of Magnetic Resonance Imaging
(MRI). We are linked closely to the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, one of the
largest hospital trusts in the UK and one of the largest teaching hospitals in Europe. The
Jubilee Campus is also the site of the new the Carbon Neutral Laboratory for Sustainable
Chemistry, part funded by a £12m donation by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). 诺丁汉大学的彼

One of the UK’s leading universities for collaboration with industry, the University has joint
projects with Government and industry partners, from small and medium-sized enterprises

3. With mature campuses in Malaysia (5,400 students) and China (6,500 students), Asia is a
significant market for the University’s global knowledge exchange networks. For example, in
the health area, the University provided CPD training for China Resources Pharmaceutical
Commercial Group Ltd (CRPCG), and has established partnerships with the Shanghai Mental
Health Centre. It has also run short courses for nurse leaders and faculty in collaboration
with the Guanghua Nursing Foundation and has established an exchange programme with

Message from Healthcare UK
China and the UK share many goals. These include providing high quality healthcare for all
citizens, planning and delivering services for the rapidly growing elderly population, and
adapting services to manage the rising burden of non-communicable diseases, including
diabetes, respiratory conditions, cancer and dementia. The changing healthcare needs of
our respective populations are placing enormous demands on our health systems and
infrastructure. The healthcare reforms initiated by China seek to develop a system providing
“safe, effective, convenient and affordable” healthcare to both rural and urban residents by
2020. Having established near-universal insurance coverage, improving the quality and
choice of healthcare services is a priority for China in 2013-2017.
Many of the areas of focus for the reforms such as improved service delivery, more effective
public health and better hospital management, correspond with areas of expertise within
the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) and its commercial healthcare sector.

II. Centre for Evidence-based Healthcare in China:
a leader in UK/China healthcare collaborations

Centre for Evidence-based Healthcare in China
China faces a number of major public health challenges, for example smoking-related lung
and cardiovascular disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes, healthcare pathways for the elderly,
and mental health. With its proven expertise in public health, epidemiology and evidence-
based medicine, The University of Nottingham could contribute significantly, both at a
regional and, potentially, national level in these areas. The University of Nottingham is
uniquely placed to undertake knowledge exchange activities in China, building on the
growing capabilities at UNNC and in the UK.

Why evidence-based healthcare为何选择循证医疗
Evidence-based healthcare is a process of synthesizing the best available evidence on the
effectiveness, cost-effectiveness meaningfulness and appropriateness of healthcare
interventions. The advantage of evidence-based healthcare is that by imposing a process
over delivery of healthcare, common mistakes in delivery of healthcare are avoided. Hence,
practical cost-effective and efficient solutions can be designed. The Centre initially will
operate as a virtual grouping of researchers, encompassing other activity jointly delivered
between our UK and China campuses, in partnership with a range of academic and
healthcare partners in China. There are three key steps in this process:
循证医疗是对可说明医疗卫生决策有效性、成本效益、合适性的一些列最佳证据进行
整合的过程。循证医疗的优势在于可通过循证过程避免医疗卫生实施中常见的错误，

1) Describing the extent of the problem (typically from information gathered using

2) Defining the best treatment or intervention strategy to deal with a given condition in
this population (typically making use of systematic reviews of literature, and clinical

3) Determining the best way to deliver healthcare to the target population (again using
public health information and taking advantage of appropriate health promotion

The Centre will act as a conduit for other activities driven by the University of Nottingham in
the healthcare arena in China, with a remit to act as a focal point for engagement with
China’s healthcare agenda, and will undertake research and offer education and training

The Centre will link to the University’s wider capabilities, including the Centre for Evidence-
based Dermatology. Academics in the School of Health Sciences with expertise in systematic
review methodologies, including meta-analysis and meta-synthesis, and academics in the
School of Medicine with expertise in the public health/epidemiology areas. For example, the
Institute of Mental Health is already collaborating with Shanghai Jiao Tong University to

8. explore mental healthcare issues in China, and this activity will be incorporated under the
remit of the Centre. In addition, it will also bring in the expertise from the Business School
through the recently established Centre for Health Innovation, Leadership and Learning to
develop leadership and management skills in the healthcare sector. 该中心将与诺丁汉大

The Centre will: 中心的目标：
- Facilitate research collaborations with Chinese and UK healthcare institutions by
enhancing interactions between UK and China based researchers and clinicians, and
by using access to populations and samples from collections in China and the UK to
facilitate research
- Enhance the interaction and policy dialogue with the both the regional and national
government
- Engage with the commercial sector in China and establish a presence in the
healthcare education sector
- Contribute to healthcare education provision in China that is tailored for the China
healthcare sector needs. There is a major requirement within China to access high
quality postgraduate education programmes and CPD programmes. The centre will
seek to play a major role in the delivery of such programmes, both through the
Ningbo campus and also through links in the UK.
- Host exchanges for more senior staff wishing to gain experience of the UK or China’s
healthcare sector
- Organise international conferences
- Provide CPD courses for Chinese healthcare professionals
- 增强中英科研人员、临床医生间互动，开放中英人口及样本数据，以便于促进
科研及科研合作；
- 增强与地方、国家政府间的互动和政策对话；
- 与中国商业领域积极互动，在中国的医疗卫生教育领域确立地位；

Locally, the Centre will act as a focus for further developments in the healthcare field,
particularly through the regional government in Ningbo. With support from Ningbo
Municipal Health and Family Planning Commission, the Centre has signed an MoU with
Ningbo No.1 Hospital and Ningbo Disease Control Centre, to collaborate in joint research,

Nationally healthcare has been identified as a strategically important sector between UK
and China, presenting opportunities to share knowledge and skills in relation to shared
health challenges in both countries, and there have been recent high profile government
visits to promote the UK Healthcare sector to China. The Centre is aligned with UK
healthcare endeavour and will contribute to this strategically important area between China

III. Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences

The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences 医学和健康科学系
The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Nottingham draws
together the activity of four separate schools to deliver world-leading research and
inspirational teaching for tomorrow's scientists, doctors, nurses, midwives, physiotherapists
and veterinary scientists. We host a range of research centres and research platforms which
support our work and that of collaborators. All of these elements together offer a scale and
range of work that bring great benefits to our staff and students and which foster our strong

Overall we have around 5300 undergraduates and 900 postgraduate taught students in the
Faculty. Our courses are renowned for their prestige, their standard of teaching, their

Our research integrates basic science, translational research and applied clinical activity,

The School of Life Sciences covers a wide spectrum of biological and medical sciences in
both teaching and research. The expertise in the School spans molecular and cell biology,
biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, pharmacology, physiology, anatomy and zoology. The
School aims to achieve excellence in education, both in its own undergraduate science and
postgraduate MSc degrees and with the major contributions it makes to professional

Physiotherapy and Sports Rehabilitation. It offers a wide range of MSc and CPD programmes

and Patient Safety Improvement’. The School works closely with its NHS clinical partners
across the region and has developed a unique clinical practicum programme for its

Professor Hall has been appointed to the historical Boots Chair of Therapeutics. The Chair
was endowed by The Boots Company after the Medical School was founded at The
University of Nottingham in 1970. Professor Michael Langman became the first Chair in
1973 until his resignation in 1987. He was succeeded by Professor Sir Peter Rubin who took

Professor Hall is the lead researchers from the University of Nottingham for the largest ever
study of the genetics relating to lung disease. The study, funded by the Medical Research

of Leicester is aiming to shed light on why some people are genetically more prone to suffer
from lung disease, particularly chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). 霍尔教授是

The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that COPD is the 4th leading cause of
death worldwide but it is predicted to move into 3rd place in the near future. The research
has identified genes which affect lung function, tobacco addiction and risk of developing
lung disease (particularly COPD and asthma) for both smokers and non-smokers. The study,
which is called UK BiLEVE (UK Biobank Lung Exome Variant Evaluation), is the first genetic
project to make use of UK Biobank, the world’s largest resource of its kind. Professor Hall
stated: “We currently know very little about why there is such a wide difference in lung
health, even among smokers. We believe genetic factors play an important role so we’re
extremely excited about using the unique resource of Biobank to test this theory in detail.

Dr. Evans works within the School of Health Sciences, University of Nottingham. She is a
nurse and public health expert, having completed her PhD degree at the London School of
Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Her research expertise lies in the development and
evaluation of community based health promotion interventions (with a special focus on
sexual and reproductive health, particularly HIV). Her recent work has explored the use of
mobile phone technologies in promoting HIV testing.

20. Before taking on an academic position at Nottingham, Dr. Evans worked as a research
consultant for W.H.O and several other international health agencies in South and South
East Asia. She has also worked in East Africa where she was part of a team developing
Masters level curricula around Advanced Nursing Practice. She has served for 7 years on the
Executive Board of the UK National HIV Nurses Association (NHIVNA) and recently
completed a term as Secretary of the International Network of Doctoral Education in
Nursing (INDEN). Since returning to work in the UK, Dr. Evans has been Director of Global
Engagement within the School of Health Sciences and, until recently, led the School’s PhD
Programme, taking it to the leading position within the Discipline area within the UK. She is
a key member of the School’s postgraduate team.

Dr. Evans is an expert in qualitative and participatory research methodologies. She is Deputy
Director of the School of Health Sciences’ Centre for Evidence Based Healthcare and leads

systematic review trainer for the Joanna Briggs Institute – a global network that promotes
evidence based healthcare. Dr. Evans works closely with clinical colleagues to ensure that
systematic review findings are used to improve practice and to inform policy making.

26. Professor Stephen L. Morgan has been the Dean of Social Sciences at the University’s China
campus in Ningbo since April 2013, coming from the University’s School of Contemporary
Chinese Studies in the UK where he is Professor of Chinese Economic History. He joined the
University of Nottingham in 2007 after 14 years with the University of Melbourne. He holds
a PhD in East Asian History from the Australian National University, a MA in Comparative
Asian Studies from the University of Hong Kong and BA in History and Asian Languages from
Monash University. Before becoming an academic in 1994, he was a journalist, foreign
correspondent and editor with various publications in Australia and Asia, including the Far
Eastern Economic Review (1987-1990), among other media.

Professor Morgan’s research interests are focused on long-run change in the standard of
living and well-being in China, and secondly on economic and business development in
contemporary China. He pioneered the application in Chinese economic history of the use of
anthropometric (stature, weight and body mass) data to explore health, well-being and the
standard of living in China since the eighteen century. Using health-related data culled from
historical archives, he has published studies of the changes nutritional status of the Chinese
over the past two centuries or more and its relationship to China’s social and economic
development. Recent studies include a focus on obesity and nutritional inequality in China,
and on-going research into the contribution of improved nutrition to China’s labor
productivity since the 1970s, and comparisons between the nutritional status of Han
Chinese and China’s ethnic minorities.

27. Infrared Imaging for disease and cancer diagnosis and prognosis: This work aims to
develop a new prognostic approaches which will result in a major impact on the way that
histological tissue sections are examined. We exemplify with work on from breast cancer
but such approaches can be applied more widely. Accurate standardized and objective
methods for prediction of likely prognosis and potential for therapeutic response is key to
improving treatment. We are exploiting the ability of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR)
spectroscopic imaging to detect differences in the biochemical composition, and thus
differences in tumour biology, of the tissues. The challenge is to relate subtle differences in
FTIR spectra to the changes in biochemistry that occur with each grade of cancer. We have
to demonstrate demonstrating that FTIR imaging can image different grades of breast
cancer and distinguish between normal and cancerous tissue and importantly we are able to
distinguish between the different prognosis breast cancer grades. Histopathology is the
current gold standard of diagnosis for most cancers, including breast and colorectal cancer.
Histopathology involves analysis of tissue under the microscope in order to derive
prognostic and predictive data which then inform patient management. Histopathological
evaluation is a subjective interpretation of the features of a tumour and is therefore
inherently an imprecise science. Such imprecision has significant implications for public
health since management decisions (e.g. administration of toxic therapies) are entirely
dependent on Histopathology. Molecular data (e.g. gene expression) and immunostains are
being used to support basic morphological examination in order to make more robust and
to refine the data obtained from tumour tissue.

To exemplify current research we focus on Breast cancer prognosis. The
Nottingham Prognostic Index (NPI) is the world-wide gold standard for
breast cancer prognosis. NPI was first proposed in 1982, and was further
refined and established as a prospectively validated index. This simple to
calculate index is based on three factors: the size of the tumour, the
stage (whether or not the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes), and
the grade of the cancer. However, studies have shown considerable
inter-expert variation in the assessment of grade, particularly since
traditional histology still remains a subjective technique, with significant
problems often encountered. We could clearly use FTIR to distinguish,

28. without the need for a histopathologist, the difference between cancerous and non-
cancerous regions of the tissue. We then collected and analysed much more data than
originally envisaged in this short project; obtaining results for nine ER+ and nine ER- patient
tissues for all three prognosis grades and approximately 1500 samples stored within tissue
micro-arrays. In all cases we used the FTIR imaging and multi-variant data analysis to
distinguish between cancer and non-cancerous tissue. Preliminary results show we are able
to distinguish between the different cancer prognosis grades.
