2. An essay is:
. A piece of writing which discusses a particular
issue,situation or problem
. It consists of an introductory paragraph( in
which the writer states the topic),a main body
(in which points are clearly stated) and a
conclusion(summarising the main points of the
essay in which the writer states his/her opinion)

3. Structure of an essay
Title
Introduction (general statement)
1st Paragraph Arguments+evidence+
2nd Paragraph most important ideas
3rd Paragraph
Conclusion (summary,restatement of writer´s opinion)

4. Preparing to write
.Brainstorming of ideas
.Read and researched the topic (statics,facts,examples)
.Think about stronger ideas with supporting reasons
.Write down useful vocabulary,verb phrases on the
topic

5. Paragraphs development
A paragraph consists of several sentences dealing with a
topic
Types of paragraphs
Introductory: establish the topic focuses on the paragraph
Developing: present examples or details that support the
idea set by the introductory paragraph
Modulators sentences that provide a transition between
different set of ideas
Conclude the ideas discussed in the paragraphs

6. The introductory paragraph
In this part it is presented the topic of the essay
It consists of sentences with supporting:
-evidences
-reasons
-examples
-facts
-statistics

7. Thesis statement
- It is a sentence that identifies the main idea of the
essay
- It serves as an organizer of the text
- It appears in the introductory paragraph and often at
the end

8. Linking words and phrases
To list things: In the first place,Firstly,To begin with. Secondly,Thirdly,Finally
To add points: Futhermore,in addition (to this), besides,apart from,what is more,as
well as,not only…but also…/as well,both…and.
To introduce examples: For example,for instance,such as, a/one /typical clear example
of (this)…
To explain /clarify a point: in other words,that is to say,this/which means that
To list advantages:One/Another/An additional advantage of…is…
The main/most serious/first advantage of…
To list disadvantages: First /the main /greatest disadvantage of…is…,
Another negative aspect of…

9. Concluding Paragraphs
- Summarize your arguments
- Restate your thesis statement
- End with a clear conclusion,question or
advice

10. Revising and Editing
• Write the first draft to include introducion,body and
conclusion
• Check spelling,verbs and word order
• Re draft and edit your essay
• Prepare your final draft
