- Global Voices Online, new media are creating new platforms for citizen engagement and civil power
- Hivos funded the 2nd Arab Bloggers Meeting in Beirut (2009) Bloggers have been important organisers and spokepersons in the uprisings, One of them Sami Ben Gharbia, for 15 years political refugee in Europe and now back in Tunesia. The 3d Arab bloggers meeting will be in Tunis, Oct 2011. (WSIS 2005 was in Tunis also)

- One of IMCK’s project supported by Hivos is the on line newswebsite (in progress, launch 1 April). This website wil combine independent news and service information, in three languages (Arabic, Turkmen, English). Only 1% of the Iraki population is on line regularly; therefore mobile phones will play an important rol in the dissimination of the news and information. Local focus on Kirkuk city.
- Not in Mena region but another example of old-school journalism on line. The Persian newswebsite RoozOnline is managed by professional Iranian journalists in exile (USA, UK, France). The news of this side is quoted regularly by the international press amongst others the BBC and The NYT.
- Aikilab, hackerspace Damascus. Weekly workshops (Tuesday) on open licensing, computer programming, open source software, wikis, web 2.0 tools for self expression. They also organise Tweetups and Creative Commons events, incliding a CC Iftar. Sharing is the magic word. During daytime workspace for between 6 – 12 people.

- Global Information Society Watch (GISWatch): monitoring information society progress from a national and global civil society perspective. In follow up of the commitments made in the final declaration of the WSIS (2005), the Global Information Society Watch aims to enable and motivate national civil society organisations . On the global level: 1`) The GISWatch publication and website is used as a key source for timely, verifyable, reliable in-depth information on the progress made towards the WSIS goals, globally and nationally –in such a way that it can be used by civil society and other stakeholders as a monitoring tool to make governments and international organisations accountable to the WSIS agreements.(rephrase) On the national level: Selected (specify) national civil society organisations engage in and contribute to research on local development towards the information society in a scientifically sound and professional manner. National civil society organisations have the capacity and motivation to constructively engage in national policy making and implementing processes in information society building on a local level in a well informed, inclusive and constructive manner.
