Question 2
Molly Williamson
After looking over my own products I feel like my content throughout was good allowing
me to build a connection with my audience. My researching and planning tasks give me
access to thoroughly plan every one of my products before deconstruction started. This
meant that I had a clear understanding of where I wanted my work to be and when I
wanted to achieve this by in relation to my images and article text. The major of my text
featured on my Front Cover, contents page and double page spread article, which follows
the norm of most magazines general codes and conventions. In addition to this my website
included a lot of imagery to feature along side text or even just to make my hyper links look
more appealing. This link was very clear throughout my products as each product featured
at least one photo, another link made across my products was my masthead. This feature
helped to connect each product with one another and enforced continuity throughout all
of my products. Another link made through content would be the simplistic vibe and stylish
I aimed to stay with, to provide my products with a more professional and sophisticated
product yet still very informative. Also this is well known feature used in regional products,
mostly commonly found in every magazine style therefore this suggest my features and
stylish were very professional and accurate for finding into the regional aspect of my work,
along with my colour scheme.
typography
During the deconstruction of my regional products I carefully considered which fonts would
be most suitable and beneficial to use, whilst understanding to what standard they would
represent my writing, for example what look a certain text would give off etc. Throughout
creating my product I referred back to my initial ideas of using creative and interesting
fonts in which would interest my audience, as well as still looking professional and
sophisticated. However for specific textual features such as my essential information, page
numbers and website links I decided to use a more simplistic font in order to bring the
audience's focus to the content of the text rather than how the text looked. I decided to do
this as this information was of importance that it could disadvantage readers if not seen or
taken note of. In addition to this my work clearly shows my reflect back to my regional
magazine inspirations such as Crack magazine and Vibe who also pride themselves on using
more simpler fonts. Whilst creating my magazine and website etc. I chose to use a range of
many different fonts, some simplistic and some more eye-catching depending on what
message I wanted to give across to readers. I found the most simplistic fonts were the
easiest to read, which allowed my work to easily interact with my audience as there was
very little confused or miscommunication if any at all.
Masthead
I wanted the fonts to include the Colours Scheme into my magazine more to help establish the product more. I like the New font more as it fits the style of
my magazine more as it fits things included in my magazine more.
The new font is more whimsical and is more interesting and I feel interests the audience more. I felt a more interesting font included on both the magazine
pages and the ancillary texts.
After studying A-level media for a year and a half I have realised how important the feature of a masthead is on every single product. The masthead
symbolises the style and vibe of the brand and will be the most memorable feature, as it is displayed on every product throughout the brand creating a link
of continuity that everything is up to date and working together to create the ideal look for the brand. Otherwise known as a general code and convention
of my magazine. Due to the importance of the feature I took a lot of time considering how I'd make the most suitable and appealing design/look , as well
as deciding on the name and how my masthead would lay out. In addition to this the size of the masthead was also a very significant element as it would
determine how noticeable it would appear to my target audience, whilst amongst other competitors. On my front cover I decided to place my masthead at
the top of my page because I believe this is the most beneficial way to be able to present it prominently, so that it would stand out against other features.
To make my masthead even more dominant I used the biggest sized font to put emphasis on the feature, so that it won't fade into the background of the
cover and a contrast will be created. Throughout my magazine I continued to present my masthead in the same way as I did firstly on my front cover,
placing my dominant text at the top of the page. I believe i have choose the most suitable position to display my masthead as it is somewhere in which
can't be avoided, especially not by new readers. However on my article page my masthead was't as dominant as on following pages, as I didn't want the
focus of that page to be on the brand and its name, I wanted my target audience to focus more on the importance of the content (main textual body). In
addition to this I felt it wasn't as crucial to have a dominant masthead as this page wasn't about advertising my brand. Where as on my billboard my
masthead was displayed in a much larger font in order to represent the brand as it is a vital key task for advertising it. As I have previously mentioned I
have done this as I believe the masthead is of massive importance to represent my own brand.
Colour scheme
During the construction of my products I kept a very clear and structured colour
scheme throughout. A primary scheme in which I used more Pink, yellow and white.
The most used colours within my products were pastel and trendy colours. My colour
scheme is very simplistic as I didn't want attention to be taken away from the feature
itself. As well as being simplistic my colours weren't gender specific, I did this to
symbolise equality and fair rights which are trades followed by the majority of North
East and the rest of the country. In addition to this my products included a range of
colours. All Products were linked together by the use of my house colours of pink and
yellow which I have previously mentioned were used to enforce formality. My front
cover was inspirited by the regional magazine The Crack for it's very simplistic colour
involvement on the page. I feel like this style was more suitable for my brand then
using a variety of colours on one page, as this could lead to a distraction as the
colours blend together creating a clash. I believe I have choose a colour scheme that
all colours link together adding a unique element to my products.
Imagery
My imagery was a vital feature in every one of my products ensuring they could attractive
my target audience by looking interesting and appealing to the my target audience. In
order to do this I had to produce images that went well together, showing a connection
throughout. As this symbolises the continuity of the magazine, that everything within is
relevant and up to date. Throughout taking my images trends so that everything stayed in
link with one another, giving off a specific look/ vibe throughout. This allowed me to create
a more targeted look ,which was taught to me through my initial brief task I completed as
part of my research and planning. This involved designing 3 different products: a website, a
billboard and a magazine which I decided would be all regionally aimed I was made aware
of the importance of my imagery representing a certain style and vibe. I believe this is a
significant feature as I think images can display a story without their having to be words or
a storyline etc involved as well as linking together. In each of my sections I decided to
include imagery, however each photo had many differences to the ones previously used
enforcing a unique styles, as well as having similarities of all photos in order to create a link
For example in my fashion and beauty aspect my images were more stylish and structured
representing what fashion is about, making pieces look stylish and trendy etc. All of my
images were relevant to the category they were in, for example each image used had a
caption or a sell line in link with heading.
Language and register
All of my products included a very similar language type throughout, deferring from formal
language and informal language depending on what appearance I was aiming for. I decided
to go between both language types as I wanted to create a comfortable, relaxed and
friendly feel as well as professional side to it. As well as having a colloquial context. In
addition to this, I believe this feature would be suitable for my regional products as it
allows my audience to relate to the language used, making them feel more involved as
they are being specifically targeted personally. This would also make my audience feel
more relaxed by hearing/reading familiar textual features implying a sense of belonging
would be felt. Although I do this with a sophisticated and professional vibe so that my
magazine still has a high standard of work.
On my billboard I have used language such a "New" and "Exclusive" as I this informal
language is still represented as being informative and gets emphasis to specific features
giving off a professional approach in a less serious and uncomfortable way. Throughout my
products to represent regional identity I included many local names and images of places
so that my target audience could relate to them as they were familiar with the area
pictured/mentioned.
