2. FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE THE
DIET OF INDIVIDUALS
• There are many factors which can influence what people can/
cant eat. Certain factors are going to be more restrictive than
others.
• You have previously created two case studies which you have
described what each person needs.
• For each case study you are now required to explain possible
factors that can influence dietary choices
3. FOOD FOR THOUGHT….?
• Please write down at least 5 things that influence what
you eat on a day to day basis…

4. FACTORS THAT CAN INFLUENCE DIET
Not all of these factors are going to be appropriate for your case studies. Please only
choose the relevant factors
• Religion and culture: Hinduism, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism
• Moral reasons: Vegetarians, vegans
• Environment: Access to food and food storage, location, climate
• Socio-economic factors: Costs, income, trends, family, class, peer
pressure,
• The media
• Personal preferences
• Illness: Effects on appetite, effects on dietary requirements
• Underlying health condition resulting in specific nutritional needs:
Allergies, lactose intolerance, Coeliac disease, Diabetes, Irritable Bowel
Syndrome, Crohn’s Disease.
5. MAKE SURE YOU ARE ‘EXPLAINING’
• You must ensure that you are telling the reader why these factors are
going to have an influence on the diet.
• For example: If you have chosen Rachel as your case study. Factors such as
media will have be influential because of her age, role models and
celebrities she is likely to read about and see on a daily basis. Additionally,
income may be factor that is going to affect Rachel's diet because she is
only 17 and therefore it is unlikely that she will have a large income. As a
result she may be unable to buy specific foods that she needs/ wants in
her diet.
• Tip: Make sure your answer includes a ‘because’
• Tip: Choose at least 3 or 4 influencing factors
