Research Project: The identity of the Early
Republic 1789-1815: War & Diplomacy: The
               War of 1812

By: Morgan Johnson
CAUSES OF THE WAR:

 Started with Britain's war with France, the British wanted to win so badly they
blocked the American coastline and halted American cargo ships bound for
    France

 British sailors came aboard American ships and seizes them

 June 1, 1812 president Madison asked congress to declare war on Britain
IMPORTANT EVENTS IN THE WAR:
 Battle in Montreal, Canada
           - Americans retreated
           - November 1812
 Battle that saved upper NY
           - under Thomas Macdonough’s commands
           - Americans won
           - in the Lake Champlain waterway
 British sent about 4,000 reinforcements to America, they marched into Washington D.C and
burned public buildings, the capitol, and the white house. Let Americans know that the British
    were serious.
 5 American peacemakers went o the city of Belgian, the group included John Quincy Adams
and Henry Clay to try and settle the dispute between Britain and America
 On Christmas eve 1814 the treaty of Ghent was signed declaring that both sides would stop
    fighting
 Battle of New Orleans
           - biggest battle fought in the war of 1812
           -Americans won
           - under command of Andrew Jackson
PERSPECTIVES:
British perspective was very cocky and full of vengeance. The British felt like Americans
deserved to be punished for even declaring war on them, according to Anne Prevost the
daughter of General Sir George Prevost, the governor general of the British forces in
Canada. In her journal entry on June 25, 1812 she writes…

“I was summoned in the midst of my French lesson to hear some news that had arrived.
It was indeed an important piece of intelligence:–'America has declared War against
England.' The news had arrived by an Express to some of the Quebec merchants.
...On this day I saw nothing before me but my Father's honour and glory. Although I
knew how small a force we had to defend the Canadas, such was my confidence in
his talents and fortune, that I did not feel the slightest apprehension of any reverse. I
thought those abominable Yankees deserved a good drubbing for having dared to
think of going to War with England, and surely there was no harm in rejoicing that the
War had happened during my Father's Administration, because I thought he was the
person best calculated to inflict on the Yankees the punishment they deserved."
MAPS:

Map of the Battles in the War of 1812
PERSPECTIVES:
The native perspective on the war seemed pretty angry at the fact they were losing
battles. Most of the native Americans were on the side of the British, this
Scottish Native American named John Norton wrote about his experience at Fort
Erie. In his journal he says, “We left them there and followed our friends,
enraged at their misfortune.” This shows that they were upset at the fact they
   lost.

“As we began to move forward, we heard the firing commence at Snake Hill. Hastening
forward, through the Darkness of the night & closeness of the Woods, we separated
from a numerous Division of our Men, which constrained us to check our speed at a
point of Rendezvous previously appointed, until they had joined us. We were within a
half mile of Fort Erie, when we heard the cracking of musketry and the roar of
cannon announce the attack upon it. We then ran forward as fast as the woods and
darkness would permit, stumbling over logs and fallen trees. We passed the reserve
drawn up in a ravine, running against the fire to the Glacis, as we arrived there, the
explosion blew the broken fragments of buildings and works in all directions, it
appeared to create a general confusion. We met the troops retiring from the fort
which they had gallantly entered. We saw none advancing. Our own number was
nothing when compared to the host of foes which opposed us. After hesitating a little
while, we retired with others to the ravine, on the summit of which we waited, until the
whole of our troops had retired. The enemy did not come out of his works, but
continued firing round shot, grape shells and musketry. We left them there and
followed our friends, enraged at their misfortune.”
PERSPECTIVES:
The journal of John Pendleton Kennedy tells part of the American perspective, his is the side
of the highly educated and wealthy. Mr. Kennedy was from an elite Baltimore family, he
graduated from college in 1812 and from there directly joined the Maryland Militia.

“Here I was, just out of college, in a very dashy uniform of blue and red, with a jacket
and leather helmet, crested with a huge black feather, and surmounted by a
particularly limber and, as I thought, graceful red one, with my white cross-belts, pure
as pipe-clay could make them, my cartridge–box and bayonet, and a Harper’s Ferry
musket of fourteen pounds, white drill pantaloons (blue in winter), with black gaiters.
There I was, eighteen years of age, knapsacked, with blanket, canteen and
haversack (generally a cold fowl, biscuit, fried tongue and bottle of wine in it), and
detailed for a week’s duty at the fort. Talk about luxuries! I have had a good share of
what goes by that name in my lifetime, but I have never had since any thing in that
way that might be compared with the nights in the guardroom, and the routine of the
sentinel’s duty in weather wet or dry, and in moonlit and moonless midnights, to
which I have been detailed at Fort McHenry.”
From this source you can tell that this isn’t what he was used to, he was used to a lot of
luxuries. He says in the source, “but I have never had since anything in that way that
might be compared with the nights in the guardroom, and the routine of the sentinel’s
duty in weather wet or dry, and in moonlit and moonless midnights, to which I have been
detailed at Fort McHenry.” you can tell that he was surprised by this and he never
CONSEQUENCES OF THE WAR:
 Nobody won, things went back to the way they used to be in both America and
Britain. The treaty of Ghent only stopped the fighting there was no maritime
law addressing the capturing of American cargo ships or anything for that
    matter. Either nations gained anything.
 Hartford Convention
          - New England highly opposed the war
          - New England states which were MA, RI, & CT (NH & VT sent partial
representation) were getting together secretly discussing their problems because
they were one of the areas that suffered after the war
          - they wanted full control of their militia and finances back
 South clamped down on slavery
          - some blacks went to fight for the British because they were promised
    freedom if they did so
          - when the British didn’t do as they promised to free the slaves, the slave
owners, angry at the fact that their slaves tried to find a way to escape through
the British made slavery a lot harder for the blacks

Mr. Kennedy was from an elite Baltimore family, he graduated from college in 1812 and from there directly joined the Maryland Militia. “Here I was, just out of college, in a very dashy uniform of blue and red, with a jacket and leather helmet, crested with a huge black feather, and surmounted by a particularly limber and, as I thought, graceful red one, with my white cross-belts, pure as pipe-clay could make them, my cartridge–box and bayonet, and a Harper’s Ferry musket of fourteen pounds, white drill pantaloons (blue in winter), with black gaiters. There I was, eighteen years of age, knapsacked, with blanket, canteen and haversack (generally a cold fowl, biscuit, fried tongue and bottle of wine in it), and detailed for a week’s duty at the fort. Talk about luxuries! I have had a good share of what goes by that name in my lifetime, but I have never had since any thing in that way that might be compared with the nights in the guardroom, and the routine of the sentinel’s duty in weather wet or dry, and in moonlit and moonless midnights, to which I have been detailed at Fort McHenry.” From this source you can tell that this isn’t what he was used to, he was used to a lot of luxuries. He says in the source, “but I have never had since anything in that way that might be compared with the nights in the guardroom, and the routine of the sentinel’s duty in weather wet or dry, and in moonlit and moonless midnights, to which I have been detailed at Fort McHenry.” you can tell that he was surprised by this and he never
  • 8. CONSEQUENCES OF THE WAR:  Nobody won, things went back to the way they used to be in both America and Britain. The treaty of Ghent only stopped the fighting there was no maritime law addressing the capturing of American cargo ships or anything for that matter. Either nations gained anything.  Hartford Convention - New England highly opposed the war - New England states which were MA, RI, & CT (NH & VT sent partial representation) were getting together secretly discussing their problems because they were one of the areas that suffered after the war - they wanted full control of their militia and finances back  South clamped down on slavery - some blacks went to fight for the British because they were promised freedom if they did so - when the British didn’t do as they promised to free the slaves, the slave owners, angry at the fact that their slaves tried to find a way to escape through the British made slavery a lot harder for the blacks
