Learn how the work of enslaved individuals such as
William Lee, Caroline Brannum, and Christopher Sheels
made Mount Vernon a successful 18th-century plantation.
The daily lives of the enslaved men, women, and children,
as well as the hardships they endured, are discussed.
The evolution of Washington’s views on
the institution of slavery is also presented.

Discover the 18th Century!
George Washington’s Mount Vernon offers a variety of educational
experiences for students of all grade levels. In addition to touring Washington’s
iconic Mansion, student admission to Mount Vernon also includes access to the
Pioneer Farm (seasonal), Blacksmith Shop, Distillery & Gristmill, Ford Orientation
Center, and the Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center. Specifically
designed for students, the Education Center features 23 interactive galleries and
theaters including a special-effects movie and surround-sound audio programs.

COLONIAL DAYS AT MOUNT VERNON
Recommended Grade Levels: 2-6
Program Dates: October 15 – November 14, 2014 (except November 4 and 11)
Tuesday-Friday only; March 4 – March 20, 2015 Wednesday-Friday only
Program Length: Budget at least 2 hours
From 9:30 a.m. – 12 p.m., experience 18th-century plantation life at Mount Vernon
during this unique program! At the Pioneer Farm, students encounter costumed
interpreters producing 18th-century goods; learn about George Washington’s
innovative farming practices; visit the reconstructed Slave Cabin; play colonial
games; and see farm animals. Students may also participate in a special ceremony
at Washington’s Tomb.
Also tour the Mansion at a designated time and meet people from
Washington’s world around the historic area.
SEED TO TABLE
Recommended Grade Levels: K-2
Program Dates: April 13 –
June 19, 2015 (weekdays only)
Program Length: 45 minutes
Through storytelling, hands-on activities, and inquiry-based
discussion, students discover that George Washington was a
master farmer. At the Pioneer Farm, students learn what crops
Washington grew and why; meet an animal (such as a horse,
mule, sheep, or ox); and learn how simple tools were used to
improve farming practices.

FARMER WASHINGTON:
A MAN OF INNOVATION

Program Dates: April 13 – June 19, 2015 (weekdays only)
Program Length: 60 minutes
Through hands-on activities at the Pioneer Farm, students
are introduced to George Washington’s innovative farming
practices and his belief that America’s economic success
and independence were tied to the ability to produce and
ship agricultural products around the world. Participants
learn that Washington was a creative, experimental, and
forward-thinking agriculturalist.

Experience hands-on STEM curricu-
lum in action! Explore how wheels,
pulleys, gears, and levers were used
to produce cornmeal and flour
at Washington’s water-powered
Gristmill. Learn about the science
of fermentation and distillation and
how grain was made into whiskey at
Mount Vernon’s Distillery.

Lights…Camera...George Washington! Students go
behind-the-scenes to visit various locations on the
estate where the movie National Treasure: Book of
Secrets was filmed. Students discover the intersection
of Hollywood and history as they discuss the making of
the film, George Washington’s life, and the story of
our very own national treasure, Mount Vernon.

LESSONS IN LEADERSHIP

George Washington grew from an
ambitious young man to a celebrated
leader whose contributions still impact the world today.
Students discover that Washington’s character, integrity,
and multi-faceted leadership skills remain relevant for
achieving success. His example of good manners and
civility are analyzed and adapted for 21st-century life.
Cost: $1.50 per participant plus admission.*
