IDEO is in the business of making revolutionary/game-changing improvements to products and processes. Examples like the iPhone touch interface, the new Ford in-car computer interface, subway systems in Japan, the original mouse (both Apple and Microsoft) and realizing that they needed a more powerful knowledge-sharing and collaboration platform, they spent 2 years trying every commercially available solution - none worked. Low adoption, hard to use, clunky, etc. So they applied their expertise and studied human factors of how their own users and designers actually interact with this type of system the result was The Tube (cobbled together on the backend, but beautiful, elegant, and wildly successfuladopted UI).When their clients started to take notice, they realized that they needed a partner to make the successful concepts of The Tube commercially available. Moxie is a truly SaaS multitenant application that has been architected using Web 2.0 technology for performance and scalability. Jive was built as a enterprise license application for on-premise deployment and Jive’s recent SaaS offering is to offer their solution in a hosted model. The problem with this is using the old license software model in a hosted environment without all the benefits of true SaaS as a result it has issues with scalability and it is at a much higher cost as they would have create a separate instance for each customer and updating to each new revision is like updating on-premise across multiple customers,For Moxie there is only one instance of the application and each customer data is compartmentalized in a secure environment for each client.Database -Moxie uses Mongo database, designed specifically for maximizing uptime and scalability for social applications vs Jive is developed on relational databases such as Oracle or MS SQL primarily used for traditional form based enterprise software applications.Architecture – Moxie’s architecture is based on the new Liquid templating language that enables easy user customization with the guidelines of a strong user experience, so the application can fit the organizational needs but avoid creating inconsistent user experience and silo the way info is presented. Jive is built on the open social framework which uses widgets and gadgets to display information derived from third party systems, that creates an inconsistent user experience.
