In this presentation, Lavanya introduces IoT and associated trends. Her interest areas lie in IoT applications that can mitigate natural disasters and conserve wild life.
2. INTRODUCTION
The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of physical
objects or "things" embedded with electronics, software,
sensors and connectivity to enable it to achieve greater
value and service by exchanging data with the
manufacturer, operator and/or other connected devices.
Typically, IoT is expected to offer advanced connectivity
of devices, systems, and services that goes
beyond machine to machine communication and covers
a variety of protocols, domains, and applications. The
interconnection of these embedded devices, is expected
to usher in automation in nearly all fields, while also
enabling advanced applications like a smart grid.
3. Things, in the IoT, can refer to a wide variety of
devices such as heart monitoring
implants, biochip transponders on farm animals,
electric clams in coastal waters, automobiles with
built-in sensors, or field operation devices that
assist fire-fighters in search and rescue.
Besides the plethora of new application areas for
Internet connected automation to expand into, IoT
is also expected to generate large amounts of data
from diverse locations that is aggregated at a very
high-velocity, thereby increasing the need to better
index, store and process such data.
4. TRENDS
According to Gartner,Inc. (a technology research and advisory
corporation), there will be nearly 26 billion devices on the Internet of
Things by 2020.The fields are in:
Media
Environmental monitoring
Infrastructure management
Manufacturing
Energy management
Medical and healthcare systems
Building and home automation
Transportation
Large scale deployments
5. As the media is the powerful network,I believe that media sector will
have a greater impact of Iot.
In the present generation, many people are prone to chronic
diseases,so medical and health care network also plays a major role.
Besides home based energy management, the IoT is especially
relevant to the Smart Grid since it provides systems to gather and act
on energy and power-related information in an automated fashion
with the goal to improve the efficiency, reliability, economics, and
sustainability of the production and distribution of
electricity. Using AMI devices connected to the Internet backbone,
electric utilities can not only collect data from end-user connections,
but also manage other distribution automation devices like
transformers and reclosers.
6. INTEREST AREAS
My interested areas under this topic are environmental monitering, building and
home automation, transport.
IoT typically utilize sensors to assist in environmental protection by monitoring
atmosphere and can even include areas like monitoring the wildlife and their
habitats. Development of resource constrained devices connected to the Internet
also means that other applications natural disasters can also be used by
emergency services to provide more effective aid. IoT devices can be used to monitor
and control the mechanical, electrical and electronic systems used in various types of
buildings. The IoT can assist in integration of communications, control, and information
processing across various transportation systems.
If I would given a chance in this area, I will try to setup the IoT device to the areas
where there are more prone to natural disasters.
Setting up IoT in every wildlife sanctuary to prevent them from hunting, extinction.
Monitering the health and general well-being of senior citizens once in a
month with free of cost.
