Information System
What is information System?
Set of interrelated components
• Collect, process, store, and distribute information
• Support decision making, coordination, and control
What are the types of Information System?
• Management Information System (MIS) - Tactical
• Decision Support System (DSS) - Tactical
• Executive Support System (ESS) - Strategic
• Transaction Processing System (TPS) - Operational
7/19/2016 26
Management Information system
• Management information system is the term given to the discipline
focused on the integration of computer system with the aims and
objectives on an organization.

• MIS is Sub System Concepts
• Gives relevant information to management
• MIS is flexible
• Enhances productivity
• Is a coordinate system
• Feedback system
7/19/2016 28
Outputs of a MIS
 Schedule reports
 Produced periodically, or on a schedule (daily, weekly, monthly)
 Key-indicator Report
 Summarizes the previous day’s critical activities
 Typically available at the beginning of each day
 Demand report

an “information Application” (to distinguish it from an “operational
application” that collects the data in the course of normal business
operation).
7/19/2016 30

orientation
Gives rapid access to information
Handles large amount of data
from different sources
Provides report and presentation
flexibility
Support drill down analysis and
comparisons using advanced s/w
7/19/2016 31
Executive Support system (ESS)
 An Executive Support System ("ESS") is designed to help senior
management make strategic decisions. It gathers analyses and
summarizes the key internal and external information used in the
business. A good way to think about an ESS is to imagine the senior
management team in an aircraft cockpit - with the instrument panel
showing them the status of all the key business activities. ESS
typically involves lots of data analysis and modeling tools such as
"what-if" analysis to help strategic decision-making.
7/19/2016 32
Characteristics of ESS
 Are tailored to individual executives
 Are easy to use
 Have drill down abilities
 Support the need for the external data
 Can help with situations that have high degree of uncertainty
 Have a future orientation
 Are linked with value added business process
7/19/2016 33
Roles of ESS
 Address non routine decision requiring judgement, evolution, and
insight
 Present graphs and data from many sources through an interface
that is easy for senior managers to use
 Incorporate data about external events such as new tax laws or
competitors , but also draws a summarized information from internal
MIS and DSS
 It filters, compresses and trach critical data, displaying that data of
greatest importance to senior managers.
7/19/2016 34
Transaction Processing System
• A transaction process system (TPS) is an information processing
system for business transactions involving the collection,
modification and retrieval of all transaction data. Characteristics of a
TPS include performance, reliability and consistency.
• TPS is also known as transaction processing or real-time processing.
For example we can say Order entry system, cheque processing
system, account receivable system, payroll system and Ticket
reservation system.
7/19/2016 35
Types of TPS
Online system Batch Processing
 It involves a direct connection
between the operator and TPS
program, they provide immediate
result.
 For example, An order arrive by
telephone call it is processed at that
moment and results are produced
 It is the second type of TPS, where
transaction are grouped together and
processed as a unit
 For example we can say A cheque
processing in a bank all the cheque
received in a particular day are
grouped together. They are then
stored by the account number and
processed in a batch
7/19/2016 36
TPS Characteristics
• It is records internal and external transactions for a company.
• It is performs routine, repetitive tasks. Its mostly used by operational
management.
• Transaction can be recorded in batch mode or online.
• There are six steps in processing a transaction. They are data entry,
data validation, data processing and revalidation , storage – output
generation and query support.
7/19/2016 37
Strategic level management
• In strategic level management they using following information
system
 Executive Support System - is designed to help senior management
make strategic decisions. It gathers analyses and summarizes the key
internal and external information used in the business. A good way
to think about an ESS is to imagine the senior management team in
an aircraft cockpit - with the instrument panel showing them the
status of all the key business activities. ESS typically involves lots of
data analysis and modeling tools such as "what-if" analysis to help
strategic decision-making.
7/19/2016 38
Tactical level management
• In tactical level manage they using two different information system like
Management Information System, Decision Support System.
MIS –used to transform data into information useful for decision making.
Computers can provide financial statements and performance reports to assist in
the planning, monitoring and implementation of strategy. MIS systems provide a
valuable function in that they can collate into coherent reports unmanageable
volumes of data that would otherwise be broadly useless to decision makers. By
studying these reports decision-makers can identify patterns and trends that
would have remained unseen if the raw data were consulted manually. MIS
systems can provide predictions about the effect on sales that an alteration in price
would have on a product.
DSS - enable more informed decision making within an enterprise than would be
possible without MIS systems. For most businesses, there are a variety of
requirements for information. Senior managers need information to help with
their business planning. Middle management needs more detailed information to
help them monitor and control business activities.
7/19/2016 39
Operational Level management
• In Operational Level management they using following Information
system
 Transaction Processing System - A transaction process system and
transaction processing are often contrasted with a batch process
system and batch processing, where many requests are executed all
at one time. The former requires the interaction of a user, whereas
batch processing does not require a user to be present. Also, in batch
processing the results of each transaction are not immediately
available. Additionally, there is a delay while the many requests are
being organized, stored and eventually executed

  • 32. Executive Support system (ESS)  An Executive Support System ("ESS") is designed to help senior management make strategic decisions. It gathers analyses and summarizes the key internal and external information used in the business. A good way to think about an ESS is to imagine the senior management team in an aircraft cockpit - with the instrument panel showing them the status of all the key business activities. ESS typically involves lots of data analysis and modeling tools such as "what-if" analysis to help strategic decision-making. 7/19/2016 32
  • 33. Characteristics of ESS  Are tailored to individual executives  Are easy to use  Have drill down abilities  Support the need for the external data  Can help with situations that have high degree of uncertainty  Have a future orientation  Are linked with value added business process 7/19/2016 33

Characteristics of a TPS include performance, reliability and consistency. • TPS is also known as transaction processing or real-time processing. For example we can say Order entry system, cheque processing system, account receivable system, payroll system and Ticket reservation system. 7/19/2016 35
  • 36. Types of TPS Online system Batch Processing  It involves a direct connection between the operator and TPS program, they provide immediate result.  For example, An order arrive by telephone call it is processed at that moment and results are produced  It is the second type of TPS, where transaction are grouped together and processed as a unit  For example we can say A cheque processing in a bank all the cheque received in a particular day are grouped together. They are then stored by the account number and processed in a batch 7/19/2016 36
  • 37. TPS Characteristics • It is records internal and external transactions for a company. • It is performs routine, repetitive tasks. Its mostly used by operational management. • Transaction can be recorded in batch mode or online. • There are six steps in processing a transaction. They are data entry, data validation, data processing and revalidation , storage – output generation and query support. 7/19/2016 37
  • 38. Strategic level management • In strategic level management they using following information system  Executive Support System - is designed to help senior management make strategic decisions. 7/19/2016 38
  • 39. Tactical level management • In tactical level manage they using two different information system like Management Information System, Decision Support System. MIS –used to transform data into information useful for decision making. Computers can provide financial statements and performance reports to assist in the planning, monitoring and implementation of strategy. MIS systems provide a valuable function in that they can collate into coherent reports unmanageable volumes of data that would otherwise be broadly useless to decision makers. By studying these reports decision-makers can identify patterns and trends that would have remained unseen if the raw data were consulted manually. MIS systems can provide predictions about the effect on sales that an alteration in price would have on a product. DSS - enable more informed decision making within an enterprise than would be possible without MIS systems. For most businesses, there are a variety of requirements for information. Senior managers need information to help with their business planning. Middle management needs more detailed information to help them monitor and control business activities. 7/19/2016 39
  • 40. Operational Level management • In Operational Level management they using following Information system  Transaction Processing System - A transaction process system and transaction processing are often contrasted with a batch process system and batch processing, where many requests are executed all at one time. The former requires the interaction of a user, whereas batch processing does not require a user to be present. Also, in batch processing the results of each transaction are not immediately available. Additionally, there is a delay while the many requests are being organized, stored and eventually executed 7/19/2016 40
