About ISO
• ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is an
independent, non-government organization.
• ISO is the world's largest developer of voluntary
International Standards.
• ISO made up for 163 member countries .
• ISO has published more than 19500 International
Standards covering almost every industry, from
technology, to food safety, to agriculture and healthcare
etc.
• The ISO story began in 1946 when delegates from 25
countries met at the Institute of Civil Engineers in London
and decided to create a new international organization ‘to
facilitate the international coordination and unification of
industrial standards’.
• In February 1947 the new organization, ISO, officially
began operations.
Head quarters of ISO
Central Secretariat that is based in Geneva, Switzerland
• Bureau of Indian standards(BIS) represents ISO in India.
ISO standards
• ISO 9000 - Quality management
• Country Codes - ISO 3166
• ISO 50001 - Energy management
• ISO 31000 - Risk management
• ISO 22000 - Food safety management
• ISO 14000 - Environmental management
• ISO/IEC 27001 - Information security management
• ISO 20121 - Sustainable events
Types of ISO standards
• Generic standards and
• Specific standards
Generic standards
Generic means that the same standards can be applied:
• to any organization, large or small, whatever its product
or service,
• in any sector of activity, and
• whether it is a business enterprise, a public
administration, or a government department.
Specific standards
• It can be applied in specific sectors.
ISO 9000 - Quality management
• The ISO 9000 family addresses various aspects of quality
management and contains some of ISO’s best known
standards. The standards provide guidance and tools for
companies and organizations who want to ensure that
their products and services consistently meet customer’s
requirements, and that quality is consistently improved.
• Standards in the ISO 9000 family include:
• ISO 9001:2008 - sets out the requirements of a
quality management system
• ISO 9000:2005 - covers the basic concepts and
language
• ISO 9004:2009 - focuses on how to make a quality
management system more efficient and effective
• ISO 19011:2011 - sets out guidance on internal and
external audits of quality management systems.
ISO 50001 - Energy management
• ISO 50001 supports organizations in all sectors to use
energy more efficiently, through the development of an
energy management system (EnMS).
• ISO 50001:2011 provides a framework of requirements for
organizations to:
• Develop a policy for more efficient use of energy
• Fix targets and objectives to meet the policy
• Use data to better understand and make decisions about
energy use
• Measure the results
• Review how well the policy works, and
• Continually improve energy management.
ISO 22000 - Food safety management
• The ISO 22000 family of International Standards
addresses food safety management.
• The consequences of unsafe food can be serious and
ISO’s food safety management standards help
organizations identify and control food safety hazards
• . As many of today's food products repeatedly cross
national boundaries, International Standards are needed
to ensure the safety of the global food supply chain.
ISO 14000 - Environmental management
• ISO 14001:2004 sets out the criteria for an environmental
management system and can be certified to. It does not
state requirements for environmental performance, but
maps out a framework that a company or organization
can follow to set up an effective environmental
management system.
• The benefits of using ISO 14001:2004 can include:
• Reduced cost of waste management
• Savings in consumption of energy and materials
• Lower distribution costs
• Improved corporate image among regulators, customers
and the public
What is BIS ?
Bureau of Indian Standards- the National Standards Body
of India
Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) took over work of Indian
Standards Institution (ISI) through enactment of BIS Act
(1986) by the Indian Parliament
ISI was set up in Jan 1947 by a resolution of the Parliament
• BIS has so far formulated over 19000 standards in
various technology areas, which help the industry in
upgrading the quality of their goods and services.
• The BIS product Certification Scheme is one of the largest
in the world, with over 26500 licensees covering more
than 900 products.
• .It allows the licensees to use the popular ISI mark on
their product, which is synonymous with quality products.
• 90 products are under mandatory certification.
• BIS also operates Foreign Manufacturers Certification
Scheme under which overseas manufacturers can be
granted licence to use the BIS Standard Mark.
• At present, over 350 licenses have been granted for over
50 Indian Standards in 40 different countries.
• Bureau of Indian standards(BIS) represents ISO in India.

• Hallmarking is the accurate determination and official
recording of the proportionate content of precious metal in
precious metal articles.
• Hallmarks are thus official marks used in many countries
as a guarantee of purity or fineness of precious metal
articles.
• n India, at present two precious metals namely gold and
