Adapting to Responsive Web Design

In this session, we will explore the how the recent explosion of devices has disrupted the process of designing a website that we've crafted over the past decade. When designers only have one instance of website (i.e., desktop) to design, the layout is uniform. The header, content area, sidebar, and footer all remain static. Furthermore, the elements are relatively uniform as well. Buttons, navigation, typography, and images are all basically the same across across the various pages. But if you are designing a responsive website – one whose look and feel adapts depending whether you're using a phone, laptop, or tablet – then these elements and especially the layout begin to diverge. After this session, you should leave with the confidence to argue the importance of responsive design to your client or boss – and that the with the proper strategy, the extra effort and costs can be justified (and hopefully minimized).

One of the hottest topics in Web Design over the last few years has been Responsive Web Design (RWD). The theory of one site structure for current web devices, including tablets and smartphones, has also attracted SharePoint developers, but the complexity of RWD has been a stumbling block. In this session we will start with an overview of what is Responsive Web Design followed by an in-depth look into the pros and cons of applying a responsive design on SharePoint. We will then dive into the code and learn how to create a SharePoint site that is both responsive and attractive. We will finish with a look at SharePoint 2013 and Device Channels, and review how Responsive Web Design can play a role in current and future SharePoint Branding projects. Session Take-aways: Building off what was learned in the previous session, Branding SharePoint for Evolving Internet Devices, this session is geared towards web developers, programmers and IT to learn "how" to code for modern Internet devices. Attendees will have been exposed to not only what Responsive Web Design is and how it functions, but also how to apply it directly to SharePoint. As with all techniques, there are pros and cons to Responsive Web Design, not only in general but also how it is applied to, and utilized by SharePoint. After a thorough review and multiple demos attendees will have seen the code and learned what to expect. Finally attendees will learn how SharePoint 2013 handles mobile computing and how Responsive Web Design can help solve SharePoint 2013's mobile computing shortcomings. How does your SharePoint site handle the growing number of devices that are or will be soon accessing your site? Traditional branding for SharePoint has its shortcomings with modern devices. In this session we will review available options to enhance SharePoint and create a unified experience across modern internet devices with an in-depth review of current trends and how to utilize them in your current or upcoming SharePoint project. To others, it’s a way to ensure that everyone, everywhere, sees exactly what they want—like magic! In this talk, Karen shares her perspective (and reservations) on how adaptive content is being used today. She’ll discuss how adaptive content supports targeting content to device type—and why that’s rarely necessary. She’ll also describe ways that adaptive content can support tailoring content according to context—and ways that can go wrong. You’ll walk away with a better understanding of when adaptive content is necessary and how to get the most value from it.

If your situation mirrors that of most organizations, the process often begins with some initial planning and discovery, followed by the design phase. In the design phase, Photoshop is opened and wireframes evolve into static designs. Once approved, these designs are passed to the developer which leads to testing, tweaking, and finally, launch. This workflow is great for traditional websites, but major evolution is needed to account for the changing landscape that is responsive design. This session will present different strategies and processes for effectively designing and developing responsive websites. We’ll look at how taking a content-first approach rather than a design-first approach can significantly reduce the number of issues and iterations throughout the process. With mobile traffic quickly surpassing desktop traffic, a new workflow process is imperative to helping us be better prepared for the constantly changing device landscape.
