2. Formative Assessment Lessons
Purpose- To expose students’ mathematical knowledge and
reasoning, helping teachers guide them towards
improvement and monitor progress. The tools are relevant to
the math curriculum to deepen students' understanding of
mathematical concepts and develop their ability to apply
that knowledge to non-routine problems.
Formative assessments — support learning during the
learning process. They check for understanding along the
way and guide teacher decision making about future
instruction; they also provide feedback to students so they
can improve their performance.
Formative assessments help us differentiate instruction and
thus improve student achievement through rigor and
relevance.

3. WHAT ARE THE KEY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN
FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT TEACHING AND REGULAR
TEACHING ?
Formative assessment involves a change in “classroom culture” – with teachers and
students moving into rather different roles from those common in most classrooms:
• Students take more responsibility for, their own work.
• Students engage in “productive struggle” with rich challenging tasks. Resolution comes
only
gradually through interactions and discussion in the lesson as students gain new facets of
connected understanding.
• Students study fewer tasks, but in greater depth. They are asked to draft solutions,
compare their approaches to others and redraft their ideas as a result of their discussions.
• The teachers’ role is to prompt students to reflect and reason through their ideas.
Teacher
questioning is central to support students’ thinking and depth of knowledge, and student
growth. The teacher’s role is not to provide answers and solutions.
4. Mathematical Standards are used in
these formative lessons:
MP1:Make sense of problems and persevere in solving
them
MP2:Reason abstractly and quantitatively
MP3:Construct viable arguments and critique the
reasoning of others
MP4:Model with mathematics
MP6: Attend to precision
MP7:Look for and make use of structure
MP8:Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning
5. Formative assessments we have or will
use this year in 7th grade math are:
-Translating between Fractions, Decimals and Percents
Using Positive and Negative Numbers in Context
Representing the Laws of Arithmetic
Solving Linear Equations
Evaluating Statements About Number Operations
Classifying Proportions and Non-proportion Situations
Using proportional Reasoning
Evaluating Statements About Probability
Maximizing Area: Gold Rush
Optimizing Coverage: Security Cameras
6. Pros & Cons of Formative Assessment
Lessons(FAL’S)
Formative and summative assessments both check for
understanding. Formative assessments may decrease a
student's test anxiety that usually comes at the end of a
lesson. If trained properly, teachers can use these
assessments to guide final mastery. Teachers have to be
careful not to exhaust allotted time conducting excessive
formative assessments in exchange for having time to cover
complete lessons. Graphic organizers and summarization
techniques are formative assessments used to assess
knowledge during the lesson.
7. Advantages of Formative Assessments
Formative assessments are not graded, which takes the anxiety away from
students. It also detaches the thinking that they must get everything right.
Instead, they serve as a practice for students to get assistance along the way
before the final tests. Teachers usually check for understanding in the event
that students are struggling during the lesson. Teachers address these issues
early on instead of waiting until the end of the unit to assess. Teachers have
to do less reteaching at the end because many of the problems with mastery
are addressed before final tests.
8. Disadvantages of Formative Assessments
Some teachers complain about sacrificing time to assess during the lesson and
fear that they may not even finish the lesson. Teachers then feel the need to
rush through a series of units, which causes students to lack mastery once the
assessment is given at the end of the unit. Teachers may lack training or
professional development on how to use formative assessments successfully
because, historically, assessments are completed at the end. Formative
assessment may lack the same weight -- low to no point value -- as a
summative assessment, and students may not take the assessments seriously,
which may cause teachers to misread feedback from students.
9. Resources for using FAL’s
http://map.mathshell.org/lessons.php
https://www.nwea.org/blog/2013/22-easy-formative-assessment-techniques-
for-measuring-student-learning/
We have on many of these lessons “tweaked” them to fit our grade level.
I have made power points to guide you through several FAL’s we have done in
our classes this year.
Copies of these powerpoints are available on the conference website
10. FAL Powerpoint
The following slides are slides from a FAL that I have
tweaked.
We will go through these slides so you have an idea of how
the class period would go.
Then you will do a FAL so you can experience it from the
students’ end.
12. Mathematical Goals:
Apply and extend previous understandings
of operations with fractions
Use properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions.
Solve real – life and mathematical problems using numerical, algebraic
expressions and equations.
13. Pre-Assessment
Handout Temperature Changes worksheet
Students complete independently- NO
help!
Take 15 minutes to complete quietly do
the best you can
Explain all answers carefully
14. Whole class introduction
Each students gets a white board, pen, eraser
and temperature scales worksheet to share with
partner.
We will be working with positive & negative
numbers in the context of temperature, in
degrees Celsius.
In degrees Celsius, what temperature does
water boil?
In degrees Celsius, what temperature does
water freeze?
15. Whole class introduction
continued….
Ask 4 students to come to the front of room, give each
student a card from introduction to negative numbers.
Stand in order from coldest to hottest.
If you think they are in the correct order, give me a
thumbs up.
If you think they are not in the correct order, give me a
thumbs down.
Explain your thinking. Students return to seats.
17. Collaborative work
Take turns placing the cards together like a jigsaw puzzle.
The adjacent sides have to match up.
Connect 2 city temperature cards using an arrow from the
changes in temperature cards.
Figure out any missing temperatures and fill in the blanks.
Write the calculations & give reasoning explaining your
calculations. Make sure everyone in the group
understands your reasoning. Work together!
If anyone disagrees, figure out why and what is correct.
Secretary write down your answer & Ambassadors can go
to another group to check your answer.
Glue cards onto a poster after you are absolutely sure you
are correct!
18. Poster should look like this:
Turned portrait ( up & down) “ tall ways”
Detroit card ARROW New York
Arrow Arrow Arrow
Honolulu arrow Anchorage
Arrow arrow arrow
City Card empty city card
space
Arrow arrow arrow
City card arrow city card
19. Sharing
What does the number on the arrow card stand
for ?
Is it hotter in Las Vegas or New Orleans?
Was the temperature change from Las Vegas to New Orleans
positive or negative?
Is (-12) – ( - 2) the same as (-12) + 2 ? Explain.
Someone from each group explain their group’s
reasoning/strategy used to complete their answers on the
poster.
20. Follow Up Questions
1.)What is the temperature in Madrid?
2.)What calculation gives you this?
3.)What is the temperature in Berlin?
4.)What calculation gives you this?
5.)What calculation gives you the temperature change from Tromso to London?
6.)Did anyone write equations for this?
7.)What would be a general formula for finding the final temperature given
starting temperature and change in temperature?
8.) What is the effect of adding/subtracting a positive/negative number? Give
me an example.
21. Wrap it up!!
Did you notice any mistakes or common errors made?
Did anyone do their calculations differently?
What strategy did you use to figure these answers out? Did anyone use a
different strategy?
Could I figure out the temperature change from Madrid to London? How?
What are the rules for adding/subtracting integers?
Does -7 – (-4) = -7 + 4? Please explain.
22. Review pretest
Pass back pretest and make corrections together.
Review your answers with your group decide what is correct.
Reflect as a group and answer the suggested questions:
-What does it mean to rise or fall in Math?
- Does your solutions make sense?
- How do you know your calculation matches the question?
- Make up a calculation and write a story in words for it?
Explain how they fit together.
23. Post Test
Handout Temperature Changes (revisited)
worksheet
Answer each quietly & independently.
NO Calculator!
NO talking!
Take up , grade and return next class.
24. Let’s try a group task…..
(Before you do this you would have given a pretest to determine groups, do a
whole class introduction discussion activity)
Collaborative work 1 (20 minutes)
Organize the class into groups of two or three students.
Give each group a large sheet of paper for making a poster, the Card Set: City Temperatures,
and card Set: Changes in Temperature.
What do you think the two sets of cards represent?
Explain to students how they should work together:
Take turns to place cards.
When it is your turn, connect two City Temperatures cards using an arrow from the Changes
in Temperature cards. Figure out any missing temperatures.
Write the calculations and give reasons explaining your calculations.
If others in your group disagree, they should explain why. Then figure out the answer
together.
When you have reached an agreement, write your temperature in the box on the card.
25. Answers on page 11

26. There are extensions given to these lessons
as well.
Then you would have one student stay while
another took a copy of their solutions and
rotate compared with another group. Return
to seat and have a whole class discussion on
the answers.
Check then glue cards down on poster paper.
Review pretest
Give post test; which is used to show growth.

Online Resources
Here are some FREE online resources that we have used in our classroom.
These resources are based on the 7th grade curriculum but can be used in
other grade levels
28. General Math ( Covers all areas)
Tenmarks www.tenmarks.com
This is a great website that allows you as the teacher to assign assignments based
on specific strands. As a student, it provides assistance in the form of videos and
hints. It also lets students practice different skills in the jam sessions. The more
questions they answer correctly the more points they earn. Points can be
redeemed to “rent” a game for a certain amount of time.
A+ Click www.aplusclick.com
This is a website that questions for each area of math that you teach. It can be
sorted by topic or grade level.
Front Row www.frontrowed.com
This website provides practice for math and english. On the math end, you can
assign assignments, see individual practice reports, and look through their group
assignments
