Generation of Electricity from chemicals
• Electricity is an important form of energy that you use every day.
• It runs your calculators, cell phones and watches. This form of energy
involves moving electrons through a wire and using the energy of these
electrons.
• Electrochemical cells used for power generation are called batteries.

Need of Bio-Battery
• In the field of electricity, bio battery is a device that converts chemical energy
to electrical energy. Different types of batteries are used in various electronic
and electrical devices. However, these batteries contain certain chemicals such
as compounds of lead and mercury, which are highly toxic in nature. Also,
chemical batteries are prone to explosions, leakages, etc. These problems are
not seen in the case of bio- batteries.

Introduction
• The first Microbial BFC(Bio Fuel Cell) was demonstrated in 1912
• The first Enzyme based BFC is in 1964
• The Bio-Battery using Human blood invented in 2003
• The Bio-Battery from Carbohydrates invented in 2007
• Bio-Battery Using Bacteria 2013
• On August 23, 2007 Sony announced the development of a bio battery that
generates electricity from carbohydrates (sugar) utilizing enzymes as its
catalyst, through the application of power generation principles found in living
organisms.

What is Bio-Battery?
• A Bio-Battery is known as a device in which the substrate
material, organic compound (mostly glucose) is converted
to electrical energy.
• This conversion takes place with help of various biological
or biochemical agents, such as enzymes or micro-
organisms.
• The substrate is broken down in the presence of these
agents to release protons and electrons.
• The continuous circulation of these protons an electrons
within the bio-battery generates electricity.

Construction and working of a Bio-battery
• The bio-battery construction can be done by using four components
such as anode, cathode, electrolyte, and separator.
• In bio- battery construction, the anode terminal is placed at the top of
the battery whereas the cathode terminal is placed at the bottom of
the battery. In between these two terminals electrolyte is placed which
includes a separator.
• Here, separator plays a key role by separating the anode and the
cathode terminals from one another which can be lead to avoid the
short circuit otherwise the entire battery will damage.
• In the bio-battery, the breakdown of glucose can be done on the same
rule while it is broken down into small pieces in the body of humans.

Types of Bio-Batteries
1) Enzymatic Bio-Battery: In this type of
battery, biochemical agents (Enzymes) are
utilized for a breakdown of a
substrate(mainly sugar).
2) Microbial Bio-Battery: In this type of
battery, Microorganisms such as Escherichia
coli, electric bacteria, are involved in the
breakdown of a substrate.

Results
• The single cell type bio battery prototype has a power density of
approximately 10 milli watt per square cm at the current density
of 25 mA per square cm providing voltage of about 800 mV.
(Figure 1)
• The six cell stack has a power density of approximately 0.25
milli watt per square cm at the current density of 125 mA per
square cm providing voltage of about 2votls.(Figure 2)
• Sony Corporation (Japan) has developed a bio-battery with a
peak power output of 50 mW, which could power a portable
MP3 player.
• Able to generate a small bulb.
• Able to detect Humidity & PH of Soil.

The open circuit voltage here is > 4.0V, Short-Circuit Current is>125mA.
The load voltage is V >2.0V and current is approximately 0.5mA while
the power is 1mW .This application needs 5mL of glucose fuel is
sufficient for >100 hrs operation.

This 5W Prototype with 15-Cell Graphite Stack Designed and
fabricated with graphite bipolar plate configuration. This Stack
provides 5V at 1A (5W).It is Fitted with USB connector and
demonstrated powering electronic devices and recharging an iPhone.

Advantages of Bio-battery
• Bio-batteries are much faster in charging the
devices because of the quick action of the
enzymes when we compared to other batteries.
• Bio-batteries available by a high-energy
density and it can be used easily at room
temperature.
• Bio-batteries are totally non-polluting,
renewable, and also environmentally friendly.
• Bio-batteries are very secure to use due to no
leakage and explosions like chemical batteries.

Disadvantages of Bio-battery
• The bio-batteries conserve less amount of
energy as compared to lithium-based
electrical batteries.
• These batteries cannot be used for the long-
term as well as storage

Conclusion
• The bio-batteries are environmentally friendly as they did
not use harmful chemicals or metals. . With that in mind,
scientists seem to be exploring every possible option in
bio-battery and fuel-cell technology.
• Compared to conventional batteries, such as lithium
batteries, bio-batteries are less likely to retain most of their
energy. This causes a problem when it comes to long term
usage and storage of energy for these batteries. However,
researchers are continuing to develop the battery in order
to make it a more practical replacement for current
batteries and sources of energy.

FUTURE SCOPE
• Bio Battery has great potential as a next-
generation energy device.
• Bio-batteries have a very bright future ahead of
them as test productions and research have
been increasing over recent years.
• They serve as a new form of energy that is
proving environmentally friendly, as well as
