In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conv...
Question 1 ahhhhh
1.
2. INSPIRATION
Where did all of our inspiration come from?
- Other music videos from a similar genre
- Films
- Lyrics of the song
- Books
- Everyday locations/ suburban life
- Urban scenery
- Feedback during initial research
3. VIDEO
- How does my video fit with the conventions of the genre of the track
used?
- How original is the video?
- How much have entropic or redundant elements been used?
- Influence of inspirations.
4. INFLUENCE OF INSPIRATIONS
There are many ways in which the things which inspired myself and Tom
during our research and planning went on to influence the styles and
ideas behind our video.
The video to ‘She Moves She’ by
Four Tet inspired us due to the
shots of subway trains and use of
footage that has been taken from
the perspective of being on a
train and looking out the window.

inspired by the film of Fear and
Loathing in Las Vegas
5. The video to ‘Blue Jeans’ by Lana Del Rey inspired us in a number of ways.
Firstly the concept of simplicity for the performance shots. The video shows
the performer, on her own, stood against a background performing the song.
We mimicked this with our male performer, the only difference being that we
wanted more interesting looking backgrounds and so used photos of iconic
landmarks and strange and exotic scenery as a backdrop as we felt this
added an element of fantasy and escapism to our video, as well as a comic
element. The Lana Del Rey video also uses shots that were clearly filmed
using a hand-held camera instead of a tripod which is something which was
consistent in our urban footage and finally it gave us the inspiration for
using footage of a city scenery which we thought worked nicely with our
song.
6. The video to ‘Hands’ by Four Tet gave us the idea for altering the colours to
make them brighter. We didn’t do this quite to the same extent as in the Four
Tet video as the colours in the ‘Hands’ video are so bright and blurry that it is
difficult to see what the footage is actually of and we wanted what was
happening in our video to remain clear even if the colouring had been
altered.

7. HOW DOES MY VIDEO FIT OR CHALLENGE THE CONVENTIONS OF
THE GENRE OF THE TRACK USED?
Conventions of a dance music video that we encorporated in our video:
- Dance performance
- Showing the artist
- Entropic elements
- A video concept that is original and very different to pop music videos
8. We also used the lyrics to inspire some of our ideas. This is because we
wanted to create a video that was ‘amplified’. This meant that we would
incorporate ideas from the lyrics of the song into our video, however,
the video would not simply be a literal visual representation of the
lyrics.
9. EXPLANATION OF HOW LYRICS WERE USED
From what I gathered from reading through and analysing the lyrics, the
song is all about a woman who is leaving her partner because she is
tired of the way that he treats her and takes her for granted. She plans
on starting over and restarting her life because for so long it has been
taken over by being involved in a relationship that ultimately made her
unhappy. Our video shows this idea as the female character is shown
getting up, getting ready and leaving her house. This is interspersed
with shots of the male character doing the same things however they
are both shown doing these things independently and are never in a
shot together, indicating the concept of separation. The use of the
urban footage is intended to signal a change and the idea of a new start
as it contrasts with the suburban surroundings of the female.
The fact that she is starting over is the reason why, towards the end of the
video the female’s face is shown as happy, whereas, when she is at
home and preparing to leave, she looks fairly expressionless. However,
the fast close-up of the male character later in the video shows his face
to be continually blank as his woman has left him and has found
freedom whereas he is trapped in the same monotonous life.
