Water pollution occurs when harmful substances contaminate bodies of water, degrading water quality. The main causes of water pollution are toxic substances from farms, towns, and factories that readily dissolve into water. There are several categories of water pollution, including surface water pollution which affects over a third of lakes, ocean water pollution which originates mainly from land, sewage/wastewater pollution from domestic and commercial sources, oil pollution mainly from vehicle use, and radioactive pollution from nuclear activities and waste.
