5. Introduction
My name is Tom Barnes and I’m the owner of AuctionsLord.com. I’ve been living
my life as a work-at-home eBay Powerseller for many years. The job is quite a
dream-come-true for me. Work-at-home business is what I’ve always wanted
ever since I discovered eBay. The online marketplace has provided me with the
perfect opportunity to make my fulltime living right off from the comfort of my
bedroom.
I’ve created what I would call the perfect home business. Over the course of this
eBook, I will show you exactly what I do on eBay, and most importantly, I will
explain how you can easily duplicate my success and become a Powerseller
yourself in just 90 days!
6. Getting Started
If you’ve never had an account with eBay, it’s never too late to sign up! Click here
to create an account with eBay!
Next, you’ll need to open a Paypal premiere or business account. Click here to
open or upgrade your Paypal account to a premiere/business account. This will
allow you to be able to accept credit card payments. Most buyers pay with their
credit cards, so it is crucial that you’re able to accept credit card payments
through Paypal with a premiere or business account..
Now, open an eBay store. I recommend you open a store as it provides a way for
you to list more of your items at much lower listing fee costs.
Finally, you should definitely consider setting up a website to compliment your
eBay sales. Even if you have never done it before, let tell you: it’s dead simple to
get started. You only need two things: a domain name, and a hosting account.
1. To get a domain name, visit godaddy by clicking here and then type in a
domain name you wish to get. A domain name is as cheap as $2.99! A
domain name for example could be MyWebsite.com
Save more! At the checkout page, enter in the coupon code cjcdeal121 to take
10% off your purchase, or cjcdeal124 to take $1 off your order
7. 2. Once you have a domain name, click here to sign up for hosting at
hostgator. Hosting is practically free if you take advantage of the
promotion code below. A hatchling account is all you need. Make sure that
you sign up for Linux hosting and not Windows hosting.
Save more! At the checkout page, enter in the coupon code musica to take
$9.94 off your order, or snowman to take off 20% off your purchase
And that’s it! Now you’re ready to do whatever you wish to your website.
Let’s say you want to upload some pictures to your website so you can display
them on your listing. An FTP software will allow you to do this. When you
registered for your hosting account, you’d be given an FTP username and an
FTP password to your email. If you are unsure what your FTP username and
password is, email hostgator support and request for this information. Now, to
upload files to your website:
1. Download an FTP software called Firezilla by clicking here. After
download, install the program, and run it.
2. Once you've installed and opened up Firezilla, at the top of the screen is a
place for you to fill in your address, username, and password. Your
address is basically your domain name, for example,
www.mywebsitename.com (do not put in http:// in the beginning). Fill out
that information, as well as your username and password to log in. The
user name and password are your FTP username and password, which
should be given to you when you signed up for hostgator hosting. Once
8. the address, username and password are all filled in, click on
Quickconnect to the right.
3. Once you have logged in, you will see a window to the right that has a
folder called public_html. Double-click on this folder.
4. On the window to the left are the files stored on your computer. To files to
your website, just right-click on the file, and left-click on upload in the
popup dialog. You will then see that the file will be uploaded to the right
window. If your file name is called mypicture.jpg, then the link to the
picture would be www.mywebsitename.com/mypicture.jpg
5. You can now link that picture to your eBay listings! Do it for as many
pictures as you wish
To change the homepage of your website, create a file called index.html using
any HTML editor such as FrontPage or Dreamweaver and upload it to your
public_html folder. Again, your website can be as simple as introducing you as
an eBay seller and where you’re from. It greatly increases the credibility as well
as potential of your eBay business.
Now that you have that set up, you are ready to start business!
9. Listing Your Items
Grab the Customer’s Attention with your Item Title
Selling tip: Make sure your item title grabs the customers' attentions. Use
descriptive words that will stand out and get the customers to become curious.
Some good descriptive words to consider using for your item titles:
Amazing
Secrets

Hot
Controversial
Ultimate
Mega

Super
Extreme
Rare
Unbelievable
Unreal
Unique
10. Awesome

eBay allows you to have up to 55 characters in your item title. Here’s an area that
most eBayers can improve – even the experienced ones! Many sellers don’t take
full advantage of the item character limit to create an informative and eye-
catching item title.
The maximum allowed characters, included spaces, that you put in your item title
is 55. You should try your best to meet or get as close to this limit as possible
when making your item title. For example, you have a new Canon digital camera
that you’d like to sell on eBay. Here are the terrible titles to the very best:
Terrible: Digital Camera
Very Bad: Nikon Digital Camera
Bad: New Nikon Digital Camera
Good: New Nikon Coolpix L15 8MP Black Digital Camera
Great: New Nikon Coolpix L15 8MP Black Digital Camera w/ 3x Optical Zoom
As you can see, the more information that you give out on your item title, the
11. better. For example, some eBay users may search for Coolpix L15 when they’re
looking for this camera. Therefore if you don’t put in Coolpix and L15 in the item
title, you’d be losing out on these potential buyers. One last benefit that most
eBay sellers are not aware of is that by providing the model number in your item
title, it will increase your auction’s search engine rankings. If someone types in
Nikon Coolpix L15 8MP Black Digital Camera in Google for example, your
auction will have a much greater chance of showing up in a high placement on
the search engine.
I’ll break down for you exactly why the last item title example is a great one:
New – Tells the condition of the item
Nikon – Tells the brand of the camera
Coolpix – Tells the make of the camera
L15 - Tells the model number of the camera
8MP – Tells the capability of the camera
Black – Tells the color of the item
Digital Camera – Tells what the item is
w/ 3x Optical Zoon – Tells an important feature from the camera
As long as you have space left in your item title, you should use it up. Even if
you’ve completely run out of what to put in the title, adding “Very fast shipping” or
“Buy from a Powerseller” (if true) for example, would still be better than nothing.
12. Some eBay sellers capitalize their entire item title as a way to make it stand out. I
personally don’t do this nor do I recommend it because it makes your listing looks
very unprofessional. The only time when I do use all CAPS on an item title is
when I’m listing an item that most people will only be able to find when they’re
browsing through a category, and not searching for it. For example, if I sell a
unique item in the “Everything Else -> Totally Bizarre” category, then I may
consider capitalizing my entire item description to make it stand out from others.
Even then, it would come down to the nature of the product. 99% of the time, it’s
best to write your item title in Proper Case.
What to Avoid in Your Item Title
Many eBay sellers try to attract attention to their item title using special
characters such as @@ or ~*~*~* or others. This practice instead backfires in
almost all cases. It’s correct that item titles surrounded with uncanny characters
will attract somewhat more attention, but what these sellers do not know is that it
attracts the wrong kind of attention. The serious buyers will typically not take a
listing with such distractions in the item title in a serious manner. Keep in mind to
avoid this practice when creating your item title.
13. Item Title in Item Description
Plenty of researches have shown that your chances of selling an item increase if
you put the item title in the description as well. Put the item title inside your item
description, preferably at the top. Make it exactly 2 point larger in font size than
the description details. This formula has been proven to be the most successful.
Bullet Helps!
If the item that you’re offering has a number of different benefits, it is crucial that
you use a bullet list to point out all the advantages of the item being offered
instead of cramming them inside a paragraph. Researches have shown that
bullet list is the best way to sell an item of multiple benefits, and my experience
also tells me the same.
Text Formatting
In your description, it is best to use align left or justified text. Never use align-right
text, as its only purpose would be to drive buyers away for being extremely
difficult to read. Only use centered text for the item title or subtitle. I’ve seen
sellers who use centered text for the entire description. Let me tell you this: it
does not work.
14. Don’t Scream
DO NOT SCREAM OUT TO YOUR POTENTIAL BIDDERS in your description.
oversized
Avoid: brilliantly-light colors, flashing graphics/animations, and
texts or graphics. These features usually only help to frustrate the
buyer’s viewing experience instead of helping it, yet there are many sellers out
there who use this tactic, while falsely believing that it helps increase sales. It
doesn’t.
Check the width
Avoid making your item description so wide that buyers have to scroll across to
view the whole listing. Scrolling down the listing is not bad as long as it’s not
excessive, but scrolling across a listing because it is so wide is a major problem.
Simplicity is Best
Don’t use too many different font types, sizes, and colors. It is best to keep your
fonts simple to make it easier for the reader. Extravagant font styles, varying
sizes, and flashing colors will only make your description harder to read. If the
buyer has a hard time reading through your item description, chances are you’ve
just lost a sale.
15. Creating Effective Item Descriptions
Similar to writing an effective item title, make sure that your item description is full
of well-written and informative content. Include in your item description:
- Facts and specifications of the product - Nikon Coolpix L15 8MP Black
Digital Camera.
- Features of the camera - Optical 3x Zoom-Nikkor lens, 2.8-inch high-
level contrast LCD monitor with anti-reflection coating, etc.
Any accessories included - Two 1.5V LR6 AA-size alkaline batteries, UC-
-
E6 USB Cable, EG-CP14 Audio Video Cable, AN-CP14 Strap, Dock Insert PV-
15, Software Suite CD-ROM, etc.
Item Condition – Brand new in box. Guaranteed 100% functionality
-
Photos of the item – Multiple pictures of the product from different angles
-
Policies of the sale – What methods of payment you accept. Shipping
-
terms. Return terms, etc.
It’s also helpful to list any flaws your product might have. If there’s a minor flaw,
put it down as well. Noting a small flaw that probably isn’t going to diminish the
item’s value (for example: a small scratch on the box) will give the bidders the
impression that you’re an honest seller and you don’t have anything to hide from
them.
16. Finally, use spell-check! Misspelled words in your listing make you look very
unprofessional, and show that you don’t really put too much care in your listings.
Bidders will then have the impression that you don’t put much care in the items
you have, or much care in your customers either.
How to Take the Perfect Photo
Here are my advanced photo-taking tips:
1. Clean up the product – Clean the item before you consider taking any
photos for listing. A dirty toy, for example, will drastically reduce buyer
interests. By making sure that your product is clean before you snap that
picture, you’ll be able to create a much better image of what you’re
wishing to sell. Use a cloth or brush to clean up any dirty area of the
product before you take the picture
2. Get a backdrop – The perfect photo will include the item you wish to sell
– and that’s it! There shouldn’t be any other objects in the background.
Taking a picture of your product with junk and other unnecessary
materials in the background will create an extremely unprofessional feel to
your listing – don’t make this mistake
3. Avoid using flash - Flash will create a shot of light that can often be
disruptive. This is especially true if you are taking photo of an item with a
reflective surface. If the details of the picture are masked by the light of the
17. flash, then it’s no good. A good source of lighting is much more important
to the quality of the picture.
4. Get as close as you can – Bidders want to see the fine details of the item
you’re buying. Don’t be afraid to get in close before snapping that picture
5. Get Perspective - If the size of the item is important, make sure you use
perspective to demonstrate that. For example, you’re selling a piece of
jewelry or a small USB drive, it’s important to place a coin next to the
object to demonstrate to the bidders just how big the item is compared to
the coin
6. Take from different angles – It doesn’t hurt to shoot your picture from
various different angles, and then delete out the ones you don’t need later.
You may end up realizing that the photo looks best from a certain angle
7. Edit the picture – Crop out any unnecessary parts of the picture that you
don’t need.
Single Quantities vs. Multiple Quantities
I would suggest that you list items in single quantities. The reason for this is
because it encourages the buyer to buy your item before someone else does it. If
you list them as multiple quantities, it promotes the quot;if I don't buy it now I can buy
it laterquot; buying behavior which can considerably affect your sales.
18. Methods of Payment
I accept Paypal, personal checks, and money orders for all my products.
Accepting Paypal is a must. You may or may not want to accept mail payments,
but if you do, you will generate more sales.
Submit them to eBay!
And that's it! Submit your listings to eBay. Apply the same steps for all products
you want to sell. The more items you list, the more you will sell.
Don’t Forget to Resell
Once a buyer makes a purchase, make sure to resell your item again if you have
multiple quantities of the same item that you purchased from a supplier. If you
failed to sell the item, relist it. You do get an insertion fee refund on your relist if
you sell it the second time around. Make sure that you always have all of your
items available to buyers at all time in order to maximize profits.
19. More Advanced Selling Techniques
Feedback Marketing Secrets
Consider marketing your business with your feedback. For example, a feedback
such as Great buyer! Come back again anytime for the most amazing selections
on eBay! will allow anyone who views the feedback history of the person you
dealt with to see your advertisement message. You can potentially gain a host of
extra customers this way. Be careful, however, of leaving links on a feedback
because eBay doesn't allow links to be included in feedbacks.
The Importance of Cross-Sell
Cross-sell to your customers. I can't stress enough how important it is to cross-
sell your items to your buyers, or even potential buyers. Cross-selling is a
practice of suggesting to your customer the purchase of an additional product
that may not necessarily relate to the original product. What's the best way to do
it? Put a link to your store in each and every single one of your listings. Don't just
say remember to check out my other items I have for sale in my store. Provide
them an easy way to do it. Try to always have a link that encourages the buyer to
click on and go to your store for many additional selections. Even though your
buyer may not be interested in the particular item that you're offering, there's a
good chance that they'll check out your store to see what other items you offer.
The more buyers you have looking at the products you offer, the more sales
you'll get.
20. Make the Buyer Curious
The best way to get buyers to actually visit your store when you cross-sell is to
say something that will get them curious. Click here to visit my eBay store
becomes overused after time. However, a comment such as: take a moment to
check out one of the most amazing collection of products ever seen by clicking
here. Or: Truly the most incredible collection of products you've got to see to
believe! Click here. Where click/clicking links the buyers to your store. There are
many other ways you can form your ad. But remember, if you can get the buyer
to be curious, they're more likely to click the link and visit your store.
Cross-Sell Through eMail
Cross-sell to your customers when responding to emails. If your email has an
auto responder, set one up that says something along the lines of thanks for your
inquiry. We will get back to you as soon as we can to answer all of your
concerns. In the meantime, please take a moment to check out this absolute best
collection of products ever seen at: ********* (where ********* is either a link to
your website or a link to your eBay store). This will allow you to get every person
who sends you an email a direct exposure to your store. When you answer
emails, again include the link to your store in your signatures. This will once
again expose that buyer to your store. If the buyer wasn't curious enough to click
on it the first time, he/she will probably do so after being exposed to it the second
time. The first time you ever heard of eBay did you care? Probably not. But when
you keep hearing of eBay time and time again, you begin to care. The same
21. concept applies here. Never send out an email without a message at the bottom
advertising your store or website (or better: both!), regardless of how many times
in the past the person you're emailing to has seen that message.
Cross-Sell Similar Items
Consider cross-selling certain items with each others. For example, if you’re
selling a DVD about Arts & Crafts and you also have a Book called Fun Craft
Project in your store, put a short advertisement in the item descriptions of both
the DVD and Book listings to encourage the buyer to check out your Book. Such
as: Click here to learn more amazing ideas on Arts & Crafts! < -- where quot;click
herequot; links the buyer to the other listing.
Be their Favorite Seller
Always add a link to your listing ads that allows the buyer to save you as one of
their favorite sellers. The link to save a seller as a favorite seller is:
http://my.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?AcceptSavedSeller&mode=0&preference=
0&sellerid=******
Replace ****** with your account username.
Provide an easy way for the buyer to do it, such as Click Here to add me as your
favorite seller! -- Where Click Here links to your add as favorite seller URL.
Buyers may not be interested in your products today, but when a buyer saves
you as a favorite seller, the chances of them coming back and buying something
22. from you another day will dramatically increase. Each month, eBay sends an
email to everybody who has added you as a favorite seller to showcase your
items. This is another great incentive to provide an “add to favorite seller” link in
your listings.
Make your Item Watched
I also recommend that you also add a link that allows the buyer to watch your
store items. Sure, eBay does have a Watch this Item link on each listing,
however people are much more likely to watch your item if you provide an easier
and more noticeable way for them to do so. The link for a user to watch your item
is:
http://cgi1.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?MakeTrack&item=**********
Where ********** is the item number. For example, if your item number is
0123456789, the link would
be:http://cgi1.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?MakeTrack&item=0123456789
Provide an easy way for the buyer to do it, such as Click Here to watch this item!
-- Where Click Here links to the watch your item link
Volume is Key
The more you sell, the more experience you will gain. You will receive a boost in
the number of buyers once you've become a more reputable seller that buyers
can trust. Your sell-through rate will increase and your business will thrive.
