5 Trends Transforming the Data Center
The article highlights 5 key trends
that is transforming and paving
way for the evolution of next-
.generation data centers
There is a new normal in enterprise outlook towards IT that
organizations have been living with since the downturn of
2009, 5 years ago. During the downturn, IT teams of most
organizations across the world faced challenges such as
lack of budgets, people, growing demands from IT, and
dynamically changing market sentiments.
So what did businesses do? To survive, IT teams in
organizations automated processes, participated with
business to find additional revenue sources, improved
organizational productivity and efficiencies, and enabled
dynamic scaling up and down resources as per the demand
of the business or market.
Organizations started adopting innovative and disruptive
technologies and strategies that meet business demands and
can dynamically transform as per market demands. Utility
computing, cloud computing and as-a-service models gained
momentum – more rapidly in the last 5 years.

5 Trends Transforming the Data Center
2
Growing popularity of IT-as-a-Service models and constant
need to optimize costs in organizations pushed data centers
to the edge of another transformation. Other factors affecting
data centers include growing and increasing complexity
mobile and remote workforce demands, SMAC (Social,
Mobile, Analytics, Cloud), need for business agility and
flexibility, and increased security.
We have seen the following trends catalysts to transformation
of data centers:
Need for Integrating Disparate IT Systems
Demand for IT to be the backbone of organizations,
supporting and enabling growth, is putting pressure on the
CIO to increase efficiencies of IT to deliver more, better,
securely and meeting compliance and market needs.
Integration of disparate systems has changed the way IT
infrastructure is being looked at.
In response to changing business demands and dynamically
changing markets, IT teams were looking for ways to optimize
their data centers – consolidation and migration,
virtualizations, adoption of cloud, etc. We have seen a sea
change in the data center strategies since then.
As-a-Service Models
IT-as-a-Service, Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Software-
as-a-Service (SaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), is here to
stay.
According to a special report from Gartner, Many
organizations have now passed the definitional stage of as-a-
service models and are testing it inside and outside the
enterprise and over time, the disruptive strategy will simply
become one of the ways that we 'do' computing, and
workloads will move around in hybrid internal/external IT
environments.
As-a-Service models and hosted services allow IT teams to
offload routine operations such as hardware maintenance and
management and network monitoring to third parties.
Organizations are seeing clear and definite benefits from
adoption of these models.
Addressing skill shortage within IT departments, substantial
cost savings, scalability, ability to respond to business
changes faster, reliability and robustness are some of the
inherent benefits of these models that is changing the way
organizations are looking at their data center evolution.
Modular Data Center
Two key challenges that CIOs grapple with in organizations
are spiraling cost of building and maintaining state-of-the-art
data centers, and flexibility and scalability of delivering
services as per business demands.
Traditional data center build and deploy model comes with a
set of challenges such as delays, spiraling costs, risks and
inflexible facilities.
Modular data centers are changing the dynamics of IT
infrastructure in organizations by its inherent ability to quickly
deploy and commission data center infrastructure.
Repeatable designed modular data centers enable economies
of scale and thus lowers costs and reduced TCO (total cost of
ownership).
Software-Defined Everything
IT evangelists are harping on software-defined everything in all
its myriad contexts – software-defined data centers (SDDC),
software-defined networks (SDN), software-defined storage
(SDS), and the super set, software-defined infrastructure
(SDI).
By definition, software-defined is about the larger role played
by software systems in controlling multi-piece hardware
systems and devices. Techopedia defines Software-Defined
Everything (SDE) as a set of various systems controlled by
advanced software programs and constructed in a virtual,
versus physical, hardware space.
Models of Deployment – Public, Private
and Hybrid
Over the last many years, cloud has caught on as the next
level of disruption within IT. CIOs are using public clouds for
elasticity and massive scale, private cloud deployments for
increased control, security, compliance and performance.
Most advanced adopters of cloud are going the hybrid mode
of deployments for deriving the best of both worlds.
Data centers have undergone a sea change in the light of
these modes of deployments. Hybrid cloud essentially breaks
data center siloes by standardizing workload requirements so
as to enable easy movement between various environments.
3
In Conclusion
Data centers will continue to transform from a traditional,
virtualized and consolidated central IT infrastructure set to a
service-oriented, software-defined, economically efficient,
cloud-styled architecture.
The resulting data centers will enable IT departments to
deliver IT as a service to their internal customers, host mission
critical applications and data that is agnostic to mode of
deployment, augment gap capacities by taking help from
external cloud, and move workloads seamlessly across
various environments without business disruptions. All this will
be done economically efficiently.
The biggest fear of all – business may bypass IT altogether.
Yes, if IT teams do not take into cognizance the changing
dynamics of the evolution of IT within the data center space,
there is a good chance that they will lose control of IT within
their organizations all together.
What do you think? What are the changes in this evolution
affecting your organization? Do write in.
