2. BROKERING
Making introductions, brokering relationships
for effective KT
KT Core provides support
Facilitate introductions
Organize meetings
Support networks
Facilitate ongoing
collaboration
Knowledge Brokering is a ‘matching serviceʼ for researchers and potential
collaborators/partners including: community organizations and
non-governmental organizations (NGOs), industry, government, researchers
from other disciplines or any other organization or individual that could
enhance the quality of (and ideally benefit from) your research by being
involved in it. The KT Coreʼs brokering service aims to bring together
people and organizations with mutual interests. This can be either
1) initiated by the KT Core if we recognize a potential match between
individuals and organizations, or 2) facilitated by the KT Core upon request.
The service usually consists of e-connections first (usually email), followed
by a teleconference and eventually a face-to-face meeting. The KT Core
will remain involved as needed to facilitate the ongoing relationship.
“The KT Core can help investigators to link with other experts in the field ...our work...related
to stem cells for neurodevelopmental disorders including cerebral palsy has been enhanced by
our linkages with the KT Core” - Michael Fehlings, Scientific Advisor NeuroDevNet

Example: Stem Cell Standards Group
In the summer of 2014, NeuroDevNetʼs Scientific Advisor Dr. Michael Fehlings
expressed his interest in exploring patient preferences regarding acceptable
ethical standards for participating in research involving stem cells. The KT Core
organized and facilitated a series of teleconferences between Dr. Fehlings,
NeuroDevNetʼs Neuroethics Core and CellCAN (another NCE focused on
regenerative medicine and cell therapy). Through this series of conversations
this group has been able to refine the scope and goals for a research project to
address this issue, and is currently drafting a data collection tool. This ground-
breaking project is expected to help establish ethical standards for stem cell
research in Canada involving individuals with cerebral palsy.
3. KTEVENTS
Providing consultation and support for
KT Events
Example: Pro-D day FASD curriculum for teachers
Events that can be considered “KT” include conferences, workshops and
other meetings that are for: 1) establishing new partnerships/collaborations,
2) obtaining input from stakeholders, and/or 3) dissemination of research
findings. The meeting can be face-to-face or online (webinar) format. The
KT Core provides consultation (advice) to maximize the KT impact of your
event by: reviewing your event flyer, list of attendees (to ensure breadth of
participants), meeting agenda, group activities and evaluation forms/questions,
and presentations including slides. The KT Core will also attend planning
teleconferences, and/or staff a NeuroDevNet booth, and/or provide printed
materials (such as ResearchSnapshots) for your event upon request. The
KT Core can help create a video about your event and secure consent for the
use of participant images.
“The KT Core...provided us with some really valuable tools for coordinating and registering
participants for our workshop (Eventbrite.ca). We have continued to use these tools for
other events...additional support from KT staff in advertising our event really made
the difference in reaching interested teachers” - Parker Holman, NeuroDevNet trainee

Tamara Bodnar and Parker Holman are NeuroDevNet trainees who designed and
facilitated a professional development day for science teachers in BC in order to
teach them how to deliver a curriculum they developed for students to learn about
FASD. The KT Core provided advice and support by: reviewing their event flyer,
suggesting a tool for registering attendees (Eventbrite.ca), and providing feedback
on evaluation questions. In addition, the KT Core edited video footage taken at
the event to create a youtube video (see: bit.ly/1529OAa).
4. KTPRODUCTS
Consultation, support for creating KT Products
The KT Core provides consultation and support for KT Products such as: clear
language summaries (ResearchSnapshots), videos, infographics, sharable key
messages and visuals for social media and other arts based dissemination
such as theatre. If you are thinking about creating any KT Product for
conveying key messages about your research findings, we can provide advice
and training on how to do it yourself or hands-on support to help create the
products. For videos, we can provide information about what to expect if
you hire someone (including budgets), and consent form templates. Contact
the KT Core if you have published a scientific paper on your
NeuroDevNet-supported research and would like to create a KT Product to
disseminate your results.
“I did review the snapshots and thought they were fantastic! As the head of communications for
a Network of FASD services and supports we could absolutely post these on our website and link
to Facebook and Twitter. We also produce a monthly newsletter where it would be great to
include a current research section! And lastly it would be great to include these as a part of the
trainings that I provide to community and social service agencies.”

Example: ResearchSnapshots
The KT Core uses a pre-established and tested ResearchSnapshot template for its
clear language summaries. We will work with you to translate your scientific paper
into a ResearchSnapshot and format it. All are readable by a screen-reader for the
visually impaired. ResearchSnapshots make your research more accessible to
non-scientists, scientists in different fields, busy policy and decision-makers (including
practitioners) so they can apply your findings. ResearchSnapshots are uploaded to
the NeuroDevNet website (http://neurodevnet.ca/kt/researchsnapshots) and a
different one is featured each week on the neurodevnet.ca homepage. They are
also promoted via social media such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn and
distributed to stakeholders during relevant conferences and workshops.
5. KTCAPACITY
Developing KT Capacity for Researchers and
Trainees
The KT Core provides both ad-hoc (on demand, as needed) training as well
as planned workshops and conference presentations. The KT Core publishes
a new post on its blog “KT Core-ner” every 2 weeks, with the intention of
teaching different aspects about KT. Many of the topics are based on feedback
from researchers and trainees about things they want to know about KT.
The KT Core has demonstrated leadership in the field of KT through
conference presentations about our work, as well as teaching researchers and
trainees what can be done in terms of KT for their own projects. The most
common form of capacity building within NeuroDevNet takes place ‘in situʼ
on an ongoing basis through provision of services. In other words, when
researchers and trainees obtain services they inevitably increase their
understanding about KT and carry this knowledge forward into their future work.
“We were talking about knowledge translation and the use of social media...and it was
actually really interesting and there are definitely areas that we can apply that within
our own research” - Kristina Calli, NeuroDevNet trainee, workshop attendee

Example: KT & social media trainee workshop
On September 28, 2014 the KT Core provided a workshop to 60 NeuroDevNet
trainees in Vancouver BC. This workshop was delivered in collaboration with
York Universityʼs award-winning KMb Unit, on KT Planning and the use of
social media for KT. Data from pre- and post- workshop questions about
self-rated knowledge and ability with regard to KT were compared. In this way,
we were able to measure a 28% average increase in knowledge about KT as a
result of this workshop.
6. EVALUATION
Evaluating the impact of Knowledge Translation
NeuroDevNet has adopted the use of Phippsʼ Co-Produced Pathway to Impact
for tracking and evaluating the progression of its activities from research
through dissemination, uptake, implementation and impact. The KT Core has
recently mapped its services onto the framework, and created a suite of
indicators for tracking and evaluating its services in order to be responsive
to the needs of researchers and trainees in the Network. Impact is best
measured through conducting one-on-one interviews with researchers, trainees
and collaborators/partners. This information is transformed into “Success
Stories” to showcase the impact of NeuroDevNetʼs work. The KT Core also
provides services to assist in the creation of event evaluations.
“...this is very helpful, and thank you again for a very impactful webinar!”

Example: Leadership in creating KT indicators
The KT Core developed a set of indicators for KT based on Phippsʼ Co-Produced
Pathway to Impact evaluation framework. In this way, the KT Core is providing
leadership to advance the field of KT and maximize the provision of services to
the Network. After publishing slides from a presentation at the Canadian
Knowledge Mobilization Conference in Saskatoon in 2014, the KT Core caught
the attention of the NCE Secretariat who requested a one-on-one webinar to
explain the process for creating the indicators and associated database to
inform their development of indicators for the KM Networks. This led to the
KT Core and NCE Secretariat co-presenting a workshop on their respective
indicator work at the 2015 NCE Sharing of Best Practices Symposium.

Letters of Support
The KT Core will review the KT sections of your application for funding.
We can provide customized feedback and suggestions for planning your
KT activities. We can also provide input into the logistics of your proposed
activities and how much to budget for each. If you would like help
writing the KT section of your grant application, please send a draft of your
grant application draft in its entirety to the KT Core as early as possible prior
to the application deadline to allow adequate time for review.
“The NeuroDevNet KT Core worked with me to develop a detailed KT plan for my
CIHR application. They helped me identify stakeholders and formulate a plan to involve
them throughout my research project - using an initial consultation meeting, ongoing
communication, and ways to disseminate our final research findings. The advice and
support provided by the KT Core was instrumental to creating this plan, and I believe it
was a significant contributor to the success of my application. The KT Core has also
committed to supporting me as I execute these plans, which ultimately means my project
will have a bigger impact on the populations I hope to help.” - Dr. Catherine Lebel

Example: $1M CIHR grant successful
Dr. Catherine Lebel (FASD Discovery Project) approached the KT Core for
advice on her CIHR application for funding in February 2014. The KT Core
reviewed Dr. Lebelʼs application, provided edits and feedback throughout
with emphasis on the KT section and KT budget. A letter of support was
written, outlining services the KT Core could provide in support of
the proposed KT activities. In the summer of 2014 Dr. Lebel received news
that her application was successful, and told the KT Core she believed it was
largely due to the KT Coreʼs support.
