3. Definitions/effects
What is social isolation?
“Social isolation is a state or process in which persons, groups, or cultures lose or do not have
communication or cooperation with one another, often resulting in open conflict” (social isolation.
(n.d.)). social isolation can lead to depression as well as feelings of loneliness. It also increases the
risk of making mental illnesses worse.
What is Neurosis?
“Neurosis also called psychoneurosis. a functional disorder in which feelings of anxiety, obsessional
thoughts, compulsive acts, and physical complaints without objective evidence of disease, in various
degrees and patterns, dominate the personality” (neurosis. (n.d.)). the Effect that neuros contributes
to people is feel Anxiety, Depression, Guilt, Jealousy and Envy.
4. Causes of isolation & neurosis
●Cellular technology
●Gaming consoles
●Television
●Social media websites
●(We no longer create social interactions, but merely “like” each other’s
activity.)(Kvasnicka 2015)
●Computers
5. Cellular technology
●Cell phones are huge issues involving social isolation. People of
all ages can be seen distracted by there phone while they are in a
group. Cell phones are good tools but bad excuses. We have
access to thousands of websites and almost infinite information but
we choose to like each others photos and/or post how we feel
online before people talking face to face to resolve an issue.
●Cell phones & social media websites have created a trend at
making weak relationships due to lack of real bonding and
experiences together.
6. Gaming Consoles/violent games
●Gaming consoles are a fun way to relax but video games are
overplayed in youth. When youth spend most of their time playing
video games they don't get to socialize with other youth in a
healthy way.
●Concerns about video games is that they can be violent and can
contain very anti social topics.
●A study was done where 564 students took a Questionnaire of
Addiction to Computer Games and also Social Skills
Questionnaire. The results showed that students who had been
playing games for longer periods of time or felt an addiction to
video games had much worse social skills (Zamani, E.,
Kheradmand, A., Cheshmi, M., Abedi, A., & Hedayati, N. (2010)).
7. Television
●Youth who watch television are effected in 2 ways. The more
television that they watch the more socially isolated they can
become. The more isolated they become the more television
they watch.
●A survey was done by David, S. Bickham where 3562
children were surveyed that showed violent programs made
peer integration more difficult (Bickham, P. D. (2006, April
01)).
8. Social media
●Social networking sites are major distractions from real life. The
widespread access to social media website have changed our
ability to stay focused of whats going on immediately around us.
●“Social media provides virtual substitutes to actual friends and
family. It allows people to maintain emotional distance with the
illusion of intimacy.” (McGauran D. (N.D.)).
9. Social media (pros)
●Social media can help us stay connected.
- talk to family in other countries
-share information instantaneously
●It can help increase productivity
●It can be a useful tool for market research
●Google advertising can learn what you like to give
you better ads
10. Social media (cons)
●People can commit identity theft easier
●Cyber bullying
●Online predictors
●Uncensored information that might not be suitable
for youth to see
●Cyber terrorism
●False, unreliable information
11. Internet Addiction
●“Internet addiction is defined as any
online-related, compulsive behavior
which interferes with normal living
and causes severe stress on family,
friends, loved ones, and one's work
environment”. (Internet Addiction
Disorder. (n.d.)).
12. What does Internet Addiction look
like?
●You talk like your trying to save time texting
●You bring your phone everywhere
●You spend a lot of time looking at screens
●Its hard to converse with other people
●You prefer to be alone on social media sites then
spending time with real people.
13. Conclusion
●Technology does create social isolation &
neurosis
●Social isolation and neurosis can lead to mental
illnesses and disorders
●Studies have proven that peer integration with
youth is affected by violent games or shows
●Cell phones are useful but are a widespread
distraction for people to lose site of whats
happening around them.
14. What are we able to do?
●limit the use of technology for all ages so people
have more opportunity to socialize
●Spend time with friends outside of social media
●Leave home without technology.
●Experience new activities like going to the beach,
going out for dinner, going on walks with friends or
going to workout in groups at the gym
●Spend time with your loved ones
●Restrict access to anything that might not be age
appropriate .
