The SMART CITIES OF THE FUTURE demonstration programme uses showcase houses on the Building Research Establishment’s(BRE) Innovation Park to research and demonstrate new, converged household energy services based on linking devices, sensors and appliances with smart meters in a desire and aspiration to reduce and control the demand on energy usage and / or wastage. Key to this demonstration is Smart Devices in a Smart Home linked to a a ‘cloud based Smart Grid – a demonstration prototype of a proposed UK Central Communication Provider (CCP) Energy Data Collection, Aggregation and Management Platform’ administering Smart energy services from 2012 – as mandated under the UK Energy Act (2008).

Background – Smart Cities Programme The SMART CITIES OF THE FUTURE demonstration programme exploits an award-winning proof-of-concept energy-efficient intelligent house, developed by the University of Hertfordshire, a home area network (HAN), an Advanced Meter Infrastructure (AMI) and Smart Grid which will be integrated with the Smart Devices featured in the demonstration houses. As well as integration trials, the project will develop interactive smart energy management tools, intuitive household information displays and define baseline message standards for Smart Devices in Smart Homes to access the UK CCP data management and service broker platform via the Smart Grid – within, across and beyond the Smart Cities of the Future. The SMART CITIES OF THE FUTURE demonstration programme also addresses data security and privacy - one of the most important aspects of home energy management and Energy Market Data Communications.
