Digipak -
Codes and
Conventions
2. In this stage of my promotional package
production, I have done some research about
existing Digipaks of other artists from various
genres and my chosen genre. I analyzed the
Digipak's conventions and examined artist's
existing one.
INTRODUCTION
3. DIGIPAK:
Digipak are a printed card packaging often used for CDs and/or
DVDs. The digipak is made from cardboard stock and contains an
internal plastic holder that is capable of holding one or more
discs.
These CD containers serve as a presentation of a band`s or an
artist`s album or single. The whole aesthetic of the Digipak is
designed to convey the emotions and messages of the album, and
can be used as promotion of the artist's product. Thus, the choices
of design for the front cover gives the artist a good opportunity to
connect with his audience, since the viewer will often have a first
impression of the whole product and probably judge the inside
content by its container.
5. FRONT -
The front part of Album or Single Digipaks, a
photo of the artist is present or some form of
art.
The image is purposely chosen to show the
feeling of the music given inside, also as a
good first impression for the viewer.
Along with the images, the title of the album
or single is written and the artist's name.
The back of the Digipak commonly
displays the album's track list, barcode,
brief information about the artist. For this
particular album, the right hand side also
includes the record label's name and
some additional information about the
disk (copyright).
BACK -
6. INSIDE -
In the inside of the Digipak contains
either two or three sides:
1- the first side would show the list of
songs in that specific CD or even
sometimes a little booklet/leaflet with
concept photos and the track list
2- second side includes the CD holder
with the CD in it, usually including a
simple background
3- in the rare occasion of a third page,
concept photos could be displayed.
Sometimes lyrics of the song/s are included on
the leaflet/booklet more commonly on
Digipaks of singles.
Messages from artists and tour dates &
locations are seen, at times.
7. CD -
On the CD a simple or memorable
design or photo, just to give a
simplistic but recognizable look..
SPINE -
The side, or the spine of Digipaks often
contains the name of the artist, the
album`s title and the record label's
logo.
8. SUMMARY
My study of album/single digipaks has provided me
some codes and conventions, as well as useful
information for me to develop my own digipak in
the future.
